Cognitive development related to performance on preschool hearing screening tests.

Behavioral responses to routine hearing screening were measured on 730 preschool children (ages 52 to 70 months). A stratified sample (which oversampled children "at risk" for developmental delay) also received a standardized test of cognitive abilities (McCarthy Scales or the Stanford-Binet). The results revealed that children without audiologic pathology who failed one or more of three hearing test behavioral scales scored significantly lower on the McCarthy Scales or Stanford-Binet than other children. Children failing two or more scales formed a definite risk group, with a group mean appro

Validity of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale-IV: its use in young adults with mental retardation.

The validity of the Stanford Binet-IV (SB-IV) was assessed. This test and the WAIS-R and WRAT-R were administered to 42 adults previously classified with mild to moderate mental retardation. Validity coefficients between scores on the SB-IV and the other two measures were significant. The mean IQ on the SB-IV (mean Test Composite = 43.26) was significantly lower than that on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised--WAIS-R (mean Full-Scale IQ = 57.91). With regard to the internal validity of the SB-IV, the intersubtest relationships of each of the four Area scores correlated significantly

Stanford-Binet, Fourth Edition and the WISC--R for children in the lower range of intelligence.

The Stanford-Binet IV and the WISC--R were administered to 30 children, ages 8 to 15 yr., whose scores were in the range of mild mental retardation. The mean interval between testings was 7 mo. The correlation was .83, with a median difference of 4 points. The WISC--R mean IQ was significantly lower than the Stanford-Binet-IV Composite mean score for the group. The disparity in scores points to the need to evaluate measures of intelligence together with other indices of functioning in decision-making for mildly retarded children.

The assessment of developmentally disabled children with the WISC-R, Binet and other tests.

Administered the WISC-R, Revised Stanford-Binet, Bender, VMI, and WRAT to 50 children referred for a multidisciplinary evaluation of developmental disabilities. The correlations among the various WISC-R measures (Standard Scores and IQs) and Binet IQ were significant, with relatively strong relationships among the Binet IQ and those WISC-R subtests that require concentration, short-term auditory memory, visual-motor integration, and the acquisition of new learning. Data showed that the Binet MA correlated as well or better with the other tests than did the various scores from the WISC-R.

The Stanford-Binet: Fourth Edition and form L-M in assessment of young children with mental retardation.

The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fourth Edition appears to be poorly suited for the intellectual assessment of children less than 5 years old who are thought to have mild mental retardation and for persons of any age who are thought to have severe mental retardation. The reasons for this conclusion were explained and reasons provided that support the continued use of Form L-M when assessing such children or older individuals with mental retardation.

Effects of lead poisoning on cognitive test performance.

47 lead-poisoned children, treated and without encephalopathy, are compared with sibling controls on perceptual-verbal pattern comparisons of subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to determine whether there has been brain damage. Both groups of children do not differ significantly from each other on comparisons of these patterns, and they appear to be similar to each other in WISC functioning. The conclusion is that lead-poisoning, treated, and without encephalopathy, does not result in detectable brain damage by means of these pattern analyses.

Assessment of preschoolers at-risk with the WPPSI--R and the Stanford-Binet L-M.

The purpose of this study was to provide data on the validity of using the WPPSI--R with 16 preschoolers who had been referred for psychological assessment. A comparison of the preschoolers' performance on the WPPSI--R and the Stanford-Binet L-M was made. Children ranged in age from 3-0 to 6-0 years, with a mean age of 4-5 yr. The correlations between WPPSI--R and Stanford-Binet L-M scores were strong; WPPSI--R Verbal IQ and Stanford-Binet L-M IQ, r = .85; WPPSI--R Performance IQ and Stanford-Binet L-M IQ, r = .75, and WPPSI--R Full Scale IQ and Stanford-Binet L-M IQ, r = .82. Sex differences in intelligence. Implications for education.

Sex differences in intelligence is among the most politically volatile topics in contemporary psychology. Although no single finding has unanimous support, conclusions from multiple studies suggest that females, on average, score higher on tasks that require rapid access to and use of phonological and semantic information in long-term memory, production and comprehension of complex prose, fine motor skills, and perceptual speed. Males, on average, score higher on tasks that require transformations in visual-spatial working memory, motor skills involved in aiming, spatiotemporal responding, and

Global intellectual deficits in cystinosis.

Fourteen families of children with infantile nephropathic cystinosis were evaluated using the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition [Thorndike et al., 1986: Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Fourth Ed.]. The IQs of 15 children with cystinosis, their 23 sibs and 24 parents were compared in order to evaluate a potential effect of cystinosis on intelligence. Children with cystinosis had a significantly lower mean IQ than their sibs and their parents (P = .001). Thus, even though the mean IQ of the children with cystinosis (94.4 +/- 10) was within the average range, there is evidence

Final intelligence in late treated patients with phenylketonuria.

UNLABELLED: Despite neonatal screening programmes, there is still a number of patients with phenylketonuria who are not diagnosed and start treatment late. The question in this study was to evaluate which factors will contribute, other than the quality and duration of dietary treatment, to final outcome in late treated patients with phenylketonuria. We retrospectively analysed the data of 40 patients with phenylketonuria, of whom 2 patients at 35 and 24 years of age had a normal IQ despite never being treated. In 38 patients starting dietary treatment between 0.7 and 7 years of age, mean IQ/DQ

Epidemiology of cerebral palsy in El-Kharga District-New Valley (Egypt).

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most frequent cause of motor handicap among children. The present door to door (every door) study was conducted in El-Kharga District-New Valley to estimate the epidemiology of CP among children. Each child was subjected to complete medical and neurological examination to detect cases with CP. These diseased children were subjected to meticulous neurological and medical assessment, brain MRI, EEG and Stanford Binet (4th edition). It was found that 52 out of 25,540 children had CP yielding prevalence rate of 2.04/1000 (95% CI: 1.48-2.59) of living births. Mean age of

Extent of intellectual, cognitive, and academic decline in adolescent traumatic brain injury.

Pre-injury cognitive data are rarely available for review for individuals suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although pre-injury intelligence and academic scores may be available, particularly if an individual is learning-disabled (LD), data on specific cognitive abilities are unlikely to exist. We present neuropsychological data for a 15-year-old Caucasian female with a learning disability who was administered IQ testing 2 weeks prior to a significant TBI, as well as other measures of specific cognitive abilities (e.g. memory and perceptual-motor skills) throughout her education. Developmental changes in head-circumference and mental-performance growth rates: a test of Epstein's phrenoblysis hypothesis.

Epstein's phrenoblysis hypothesis states that brain growth and mental growth occur in correlated spurts at 3-10 months and 2-4, 6-8, 10-12 or 13, and 14-16 or 17 years of age. The present study was the first to test statistically such spurts in head-circumference and mental-age growth rates and to assess any correspondence in individual differences between spurts in the two variables in a single sample of children measured serially between 2.5 and 17 years of age. While the statistically significant spurts observed in each variable did fall within the hypothesized age periods, the chance rate

Prenatal marijuana exposure and intelligence test performance at age 6.

OBJECTIVE: This is a prospective study of the effects of prenatal marijuana exposure on the intelligence test performance of 648 children at a 6-year follow-up. METHOD: Women were interviewed about the amount and frequency of their marijuana use at 4 and 7 months of pregnancy and at delivery. Participants were light to moderate users of marijuana and represented a lower income population. Children were assessed with the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale by examiners blind to exposure status. Multiple regression was applied to examine the effects of prenatal marijuana exposure on children's in

Developmental progress after cardiac surgery in infancy using hypothermia and circulatory arrest.

Seventy-two of 76 long-term survivors who had surgical repair of congenital heart lesions at 11 days to 26 months of age using profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest underwent psychometric testing (Stanford-Binet) late postoperatively. The mean IQ of the 72 patients was 92.9 +r16.5 (SD). Stanford-Binet scores bore no relationship to the duration of circulatory arrest or other aspects of surgical technique. Scores were significantly lower in those who had a low birth weight for gestational age, important neurologic problems preoperatively or were in the lower socioeconomic classes. An "ide

IQ measurement in children with skeletal dysplasia.

We have reviewed the IQ studies on 68 children with skeletal dysplasia. These data should provide useful information for the counseling of parents with newborn affected children. Previous studies have documented retardation and hydrocephalus in association with achondroplasia. Some parents report that they were given a poor prognosis for their child's mental development early in his or her life. This study shows that the 34 children with achondroplasia and 34 with other skeletal dysplasia performed intellectually in the same range as other children.

Impact of genetic subtypes of Prader-Willi syndrome with growth hormone therapy on intelligence and body mass index.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genomic imprinting disorder characterized by infantile hypotonia with a poor suck and failure to thrive, hypogenitalism/hypogonadism, behavior and cognitive problems, hormone deficiencies, hyperphagia, and obesity. The Stanford Binet and Wechsler (WAIS-R; WISC-III) intelligence (IQ) tests were administered on 103 individuals with PWS from two separate cohorts [University of California, Irvine (UCI) (N = 56) and Vanderbilt University (N = 47)] and clinical information obtained including growth hormone (GH) treatment, PWS molecular classes, weight and height. Comparison of the Leiter International Performance Scale-Revised and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, 5th Edition, in children with autism spectrum disorders.

A review of hospital records was conducted for children evaluated for autism spectrum disorders who completed both the Leiter International Performance Scale-Revised (Leiter-R) and Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, 5th Edition (SB5). Participants were between 3 and 12 years of age. Diagnoses were autistic disorder (n  =  26, 55%) and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (n  =  21, 45%). Analysis showed that the full sample received significantly higher scores on the Leiter-R than SB5 (mean discrepancy of 20.91 points), specific diagnosis was not a significant factor, and
