The staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are capable of causing both food poisoning and a toxic shock-like illness in man. In addition, SEs are known to act as superantigens, stimulating T-cells according to their T-cell receptor Vbeta type. Superantigens (SAgs) play a major role in the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus and are associated with several diseases, including food poisoning, bacterial arthritis, and toxic shock syndrome. Monoclonal antibodies to these SAgs, primarily TSST-1, SEB and SEA have been shown to provide protection in animal studies and to reduce clinical severity in bacteremic patients. 32 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), complicated by pyoderma, were treated with purified staphylococcal toxoid (PST). Changes in clinical and laboratory characteristics in the course of treatment were evaluated. The action of immunomodulators, purified staphylococcal toxoid (PST) and lycopid, on secondary immunodeficiency state developing during infection caused by Coxsackie virus B3 was studied. This defect was manifested by delayed hypersensitivity to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) and the suppression of neutralizing antibodies to poliomyelitis virus. In this investigation lymphocytes sensitized with Corynebacterium diphtheriae antigens obtained from carriers and convalescents were used. The new diphtheria bacterial vaccine Codivac, in contrast to other comparable preparations (diphtheria toxoid, staphylococcal toxoid, staphylococcal vaccine, levamisole), was found to produce a more direct effect by modulating the levels of T-lymphocytes, depending on their initial levels in the patient. Codivac, together with other preparations, can be used for the study of the problems of immunostimulation and immunocorrective therapy.

Staphylococcus aureus causes significant illnesses throughout the world, including toxic shock syndrome (TSS), pneumonia, and infective endocarditis. Major contributors to S. aureus illnesses are secreted virulence factors it produces, including superantigens and cytolysins. The impact of Licopid and purified staphylococcal toxoid on the development of neurovirus infection caused by Langat virus was experimentally studied with mice as a model. The prophylactic (prior to infection) use of licopid was found to activate the infection. In the population of macrophages of different localization the proportion of cells with virus penetration and proliferation increased 5- to 11-fold under the influence of Licopid. The results obtain give evidence to conclude that immunomodulators should be used with caution as they show not only positive effects.

Deoxyspergualin (DSG) is a novel immunosuppressive agent recently shown to bind to the constitutive heat shock protein 70, which is involved in binding and intracellular transport of antigenic peptides. In this study, we show that DSG inhibits the proliferation of PBMCs to the Ags tetanus toxoid and diphtheria toxoid, but not to the mitogens PHA and PMA/ionomycin, nor to the superantigens toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 and staphylococcal enterotoxin A.
