Staphylococcus epidermidis, an organism routinely found on the skin and in the hospital environment, has become a primary pathogen in infections associated with prosthetic devices. Because these infections are indolent and often clinically silent, diagnosis and therapy are often difficult. Pathogens are often misidentified as contaminants. Their variable, often resistant antibiotic susceptibility pattern and the uncertain correlation of in-vitro beta-lactam sensitivity testing with therapeutic efficacy make selection of an effective antibiotic regimen difficult. Vancomycin combined with rifamp

Staphylococcus epidermidis are the most common agents of prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). S. epidermidis isolated from the blood stream of patients with PVE are almost invariably multiple resistant to antibiotics. Antibiotic treatment alone gives unsatisfactory results and carries a mortality rate of 70-80%. That is why early surgical treatment is recommended. S. epidermidis is a less common cause of endocarditis in non-surgical patients, accounting for approximately 5% of the cases, which are mostly patients with pre-existent valvular heart disease. Generally, isolates from the latter pat

We have reported a case of disseminated Staphylococcus epidermidis infection in a patient with leukemia and examined the relation between an acute respiratory arrest and the infection. Plasmid profiles of five isolates of S epidermidis cultured from this patient's blood, bone marrow, and lung before and after the arrest indicate that all isolates were derived from a single strain. This strain was also isolated by culture of the tip of the central venous catheter that was removed from the patient suggesting that the indwelling catheter was the source of infection. Because this patient had rigor

During the collection of airborne bacteria in a museum in England some bacterial strains were isolated which due to their fatty acid profiles were clearly identified as members of the genus Staphylococcus. As fatty acid compositions of coagulase-negative staphylococci are very similar, differing only in quantities but not in qualities, further identification at the species level without a fatty acid database was not achieved. Investigation of the isolates using the Staph ID 32 API system resulted in an identification of the isolates as Staphylococcus epidermidis (probabilities of 79.7-95.5%).

Blepharoconjunctivitis caused by methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis occurred in two hospitalized patients, a 74-year-old man and a 19-year-old man. Both strains were resistant to multiple courses of topical antibiotic therapy. Successful treatment in both cases depended upon antibiotic sensitivity testing. These methicillin-resistant strains of S. epidermidis, like methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, demonstrated almost complete cross-resistance to cephalosporins despite apparent sensitivity on Kirby-Bauer disk sensitivity testing. Topical vancomyci

Sixteen neonates developed staphylococcal septicemia (S. epidermidis in 10 cases and S. aureus in six). Two infections were due to maternofetal contamination and four to contaminated foreign material. Clinical symptoms included non-specific evidence of neonatal bacterial infection and, in S. aureus infections, suggestive skin or bone localizations. Fifteen patients recovered without sequelae and one died as a result of S. aureus septicopyemia. In view of the patterns of resistance to antimicrobial agents exhibited by S. aureus and S. epidermidis, the vancomycin-amikacin combination seems the m

A 61 year-old man developed painful swelling of his right knee shortly after arthroscopy of the joint. Synovial fluid analysis revealed a polymorphonuclear leukocytosis of 51,600 X 10(6) cells/litre and culture grew Staphylococcus epidermidis. He responded favorably to 4 weeks of intravenous therapy with cloxacillin. S. epidermidis, an important cause of prosthetic joint infection, must be considered a potential pathogen in other joint infections.

We present 6 patients in whom prosthetic failure occurred because of sepsis owing to Staphylococcus epidermidis. Such failure occurs in grafts in other areas and is caused by the high resistance of the organism to conventional antibacterial measures. Therapy with appropriate antibiotics, that is aminoglycosides, vancomycin and rifampin, and the need for an early operation are stressed.

The susceptibilities of 36 recent isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and 35 recent isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis were determined against each of 65 antimicrobial agents and against two of them in combination. Rifampin was the most active of all the agents tested against both S. aureus and S. epidermidis. Among the penicillins, cloxacillin, dicloxacillin, and nafcillin were most active, although benzylpenicillin and phenoxymethyl penicillin were more active against susceptible strains. Cephaloridine was the most active of the cephalosporins, and sisomicin was the most active aminoglycos

The present study was done to evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from different clinical specimens and healthy controls in the department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College from July, 2007 to June, 2008. A total of 62 Staphylococcus epidermidis were isolated from 230 specimens. Among them 32(23%) S. epidermidis were isolated from 200 cases and 30(100%) were isolated from 30 healthy controls. Antimicrobial susceptibility test of the isolates was carried out by disk diffusion method as per recommendation of Clinical and Laboratory Stand

We examined 58 surgical patients with two or more blood cultures positive for Staphylococcus epidermidis to determine factors associated with risk, mortality, and invasive sepsis. Bacterial sepsis was associated with gastrointestinal (GI) operations, total parenteral nutrition, and a regimen of two or more parenteral antibiotics. Mortality was 46% overall and significantly increased with age greater than 50 years, GI operations, other gram-positive sepsis, recurrent sepsis (positive blood culture 24 hours or more after the first blood culture), and the presence of organisms sensitive to three

In this study, Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) fermentation broth with an inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was produced by optimizing cultivation conditions. S. epidermidis fermentation broth cultivated in NA medium (SFB) does not inhibit the growth of S. aureus, whereas Gly-SFB or Glu-SFB, prepared by incorporating glycerol or glucose into NA medium, significantly inhibited S. aureus growth. GC‒MS and HPLC revealed several fatty acids in Gly-SFB and Glu-SFB, which inhibited the growth of S. aureus. LC‒MS/MS combined with untargeted metabolomics was used to ex

Cultures of Staphylococcus epidermidis from the eyes or nose of the same individual were compared by their antimicrobial phenotype, Staph-Ident (Analytab Products, Inc., Plainview, N.Y.) profile number, phage type, and plasmid profile to determine which parameters provide the most compelling data for their identity. None of the parameters alone provided this type of information. The most conclusive data for the identity of strains resulted when two cultures had the same long phage type and identical or similar plasmid profiles. The presence of a large, slowly migrating plasmid band(s) in a cul

Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) ATCC 12228 was incubated with 2% polyethylene glycol (PEG)-8 Laurate to yield electricity which was measured by a voltage difference between electrodes. Production of electron was validated by a Ferrozine assay. The anti-Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) activity of electrogenic S. epidermidis was assessed in vitro and in vivo. The voltage change (~ 4.4 mV) reached a peak 60 min after pipetting S. epidermidis plus 2% PEG-8 Laurate onto anodes. The electricity produced by S. epidermidis caused significant growth attenuation and cell lysis of C. acnes. In

Several microbes, including Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), a Gram-positive bacterium, live inside the human nasal cavity as commensals. The role of these nasal commensals in host innate immunity is largely unknown, although bacterial interference in the nasal microbiome may promote ecological competition between commensal bacteria and pathogenic species. We demonstrate here that S. epidermidis culture supernatants significantly suppressed the infectivity of various influenza viruses. Using high-performance liquid chromatography together with mass spectrometry, we identified a gia

We present a case of malignant necrotizing otitis externa (MNOE) caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, which is usually a non-pathogenic microorganism. The patient is an otherwise healthy, nondiabetic 58-year-old white man. Contributory history began in 1994 after surgery for bilateral exostoses of the external auditory canals. Between April 1994 and May 1998 persistent otalgia occurred, with progressive mixed hearing losses, purulent discharge from both ears, spontaneous perforations of the tympanic membranes and ulceration of canal wall skin. From the beginning, Staph. epidermidis was isolat

We created a standardized model of endophthalmitis in the aphakic rabbit eye using a laboratory strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis of known characteristics (ATCC 155). Eyes were injected with the following number of organisms: 170, 3760, 8750, 170,000 and 460,000. Serial quantitative cultures, clinical grading of infection and histopathologic studies were performed on days 1, 2, 3, 7 and 14. Bacteria appeared to multiply rapidly during the first 24 hr with peak recovery at 8 to 24 hr. Fewer bacteria were cultured on the third day after injection, and positive cultures were rare after the thi
