Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are important nosocomial pathogens and the leading cause of sepsis. The second most frequently implicated species, after Staphylococcus epidermidis, is Staphylococcus haemolyticus. However, we have a significant lack of knowledge about what causes virulence of S. haemolyticus, as virulence factors of this pathogen have remained virtually unexplored. In contrast to the aggressive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, toxin production has traditionally not been associated with CoNS. Recent findings have suggested that phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs), amphipathic

AIM: To determine the presence of vancomycin heteroresistance in Staphylococcus haemolyticus.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 48 rifampicin-resistant S. haemolyticus isolates from bloodstream infections were included. Vancomycin heteroresistance was determined using the population analysis profile-area under curve (PAP-AUC) method. All the isolates were screened for the presence of mecA gene, mutations in the rpoB gene, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec and multilocus sequence types.
RESULTS: Fifteen isolates were identified as heteroresistant vancomycin-intermediate S. haemolyticus usi

Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are among the most abundant members of human skin microbiome. CoNS have lately been recognized as substantial agents in plethora of infections, especially nosocomial infections in preterm infants and immunocompromised patients. Staphylococcus haemolyticus is the second most common species isolated from blood, and identification is further hindered when there is a deviation in morphology from the classical one. Here, we report an uncommon case of multidrug resistant mucoid S. hemolyticus isolated from blood in a patient of polytrauma. The patient was mana

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is frequently cultured from hospitalized patients and is characterized by resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents. We found that S. haemolyticus represented 70 of 524 (13%) coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates identified by the clinical microbiology laboratories of two hospitals over 2 months. S. haemolyticus isolates were recovered from wounds (44%), urine (26%), blood (10%), and other sources (20%). All S. haemolyticus isolates were tested for susceptibility to six antimicrobial agents; 77% were resistant to three or more agents, and 41% were resistant t

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is an opportunistic coagulase-negative staphylococcus increasingly recognized as an important reservoir of antimicrobial resistance within the One Health framework. However, comparative studies simultaneously evaluating isolates from humans and companion animals remain limited. This study characterized 113 S. haemolyticus isolates recovered from clinically healthy and affected humans and cats and from clinically healthy dogs using phenotypic, molecular, proteomic, and genomic approaches. Multidrug resistance was identified in 45.13% (51/113) of isolates. Whole-genom

Staphylococcus haemolyticus (S. haemolyticus) constitutes the main part of the human skin microbiota. It is widespread in hospitals and among medical staff, resulting in being an emerging microbe causing nosocomial infections. S. haemolyticus, especially strains that cause nosocomial infections, are more resistant to antibiotics than other coagulase-negative Staphylococci. There is clear evidence that the resistance genes can be acquired by other Staphylococcus species through S. haemolyticus. Severe infections are recorded with S. haemolyticus such as meningitis, endocarditis, prosthetic join

OBJECTIVES: To determine the epidemiological cut-off values (ECOFFs) of norvancomycin for Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Staphylococcus hominis.
METHODS: We collected 1199 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus species from five laboratories located in four cities in China. MICs and inhibitory zone diameters of norvancomycin were determined by broth microdilution and the disc diffusion method, separately. ECOFFs of norvancomycin for four species were calculated by ECOFFinder software following EUCAST principles. Methicillin and vancomycin resis

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is one of the most frequent aetiological factors of staphylococcal infections. This species seems to lack the important virulence attributes described in other staphylococci. However, studies have shown that the presence of various enzymes, cytolysins and surface substances affects the virulence of S. haemolyticus. Nevertheless, none of them has been identified as crucial and determinative. Despite this, S. haemolyticus is, after Staphylococcus epidermidis, the second most frequently isolated coagulase-negative staphylococcus from clinical cases, notably from blood

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a major cause of late-onset sepsis in neonates, and endemic clones are often multidrug-resistant. The bacteria can also act as a genetic reservoir for more pathogenic bacteria. Molecular epidemiology is important in understanding bacterial pathogenicity and preventing infection. To describe the molecular epidemiology of S. haemolyticus isolated from neonatal blood cultures at a Swedish neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) over 4 decades, including antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factors, and comparison to international isolates. A 53-year-old Caucasian man underwent femtosecond cataract surgery and then presented with pain and hand motions vision 1 day following surgery. Anterior segment examination showed a 2-mm-layered hypopyon, a well-centered intraocular lens in the sulcus, and an obscured view to the fundus. B-scan ultrasonography showed significant vitritis and that the retina was attached. A tap and an injection of vancomycin 1 mg per 0.1 ml and of ceftazidime 2.25 mg per 0.1 ml were performed. The tap eventually yielded culture results positive for Staphylococcus haemolyticus, which was sensitive to vancomycin

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is frequently associated with infections in hospitalized patients and acts as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes. The widespread use of vancomycin in treating serious infections has led to the emergence of heteroresistance to vancomycin in certain S. haemolyticus isolates. This study aimed to determine the rate of heteroresistant vancomycin-intermediate S. haemolyticus (hVISH) among 166 blood isolates collected from patients admitted to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research between January 2017 and June 2018. E-test was done to

The increasing bacterial drug resistance and the associated challenges in the treatment of infections warrant the search for alternative therapeutic methods. Hope is placed in antimicrobial peptides, which have a broad spectrum of action and are effective against strains which are resistant to conventional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides are also tested for their efficacy in the treatment of infections associated with the formation of biofilm. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of Camel peptide on S. epidermidis and S. haemolyticus adhesion to and formation of biofilm o

BACKGROUND: Coagulase negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are important. The common antibiotics used for the treatment of the infections caused by CoNS are penicillin, oxacillin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, and vancomycin. Linezolid is an oxazolidinone group of antibiotic with activity against Gram-positive bacteria. It is used for the treatment of serious infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria resistant to other antibiotics, including streptococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).
AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: This study emphasizes on the judicious use of newer antibiot

We describe a cluster of infections in a neonatal nursery due to an infrequently reported staphylococcal species, Staphylococcus haemolyticus. S. haemolyticus resistant to penicillin, methicillin, gentamicin, erythromycin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline (PMGECT) was isolated from a series of infections in neonates (conjunctivitis 6, blood 2, pustules 2) over a period of 3 weeks in a neonatal nursery. Surveillance cultures from 22 neonates, their mothers in an adjacent maternity ward and staff revealed that S. haemolyticus with three resistance patterns (PMGECT, PMG and PME) was circulating i

The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) in a small animal clinic and to investigate their distribution and possible transmission. Swabs (n=72) were taken from hospitalized pets, the environment and employees of a small animal clinic and screened for the presence of MRS. The staphylococcal species was confirmed biochemically or by 16S rDNA sequencing. Susceptibility to antimicrobial agents was tested by broth dilution. The presence of mecA and other resistance genes was confirmed by PCR. Molecular typing of the isolates followed standard p

Recent reports suggest that Staphylococcus haemolyticus can cause infective endocarditis (IE). However, no data are available regarding infectious intracranial aneurysm (IIA) following S. haemolyticus endocarditis. Endovascular coiling is a challenging approach for the treatment of IIA. We describe the case of a 63-year-old woman who suddenly developed aphasia and dysarthria following an acute cerebral infarction in her left insular and temporal cortex. After a total hysterectomy at the age of 39, the patient had suffered from recurrent bacterial pyomyositis in her legs. At admission, there wa

OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcus haemolyticus is the second most frequently isolated coagulase-negative staphylococci from blood cultures. Moreover, multidrug resistance associated with the genome flexibility of S. haemolyticus has been increasingly reported worldwide. Here we report the draft genome sequence of multidrug-resistant S. haemolyticus IPK_TSA25 isolated from a building surface in South Korea.
METHODS: Genomic DNA of S. haemolyticus IPK_TSA25 was sequenced using the PacBio RS II sequencing platform. Generated reads were assembled using PacBio SMRT Analysis 2.3.0. The draft genome was an

INTRODUCTION: Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis. Balanoposthitis involves both the glans penis and prepuce and occurs only in uncircumcised males. Recurrent balanoposthitis represents a strong indication for circumcision. After Candida infections, aerobic bacteria are the second most common aetiological cause of acute infectious balanoposthitis, mainly streptococci groups B and D, and staphylococci, usually S. aureus . Their clinical manifestations are variable inflammatory changes, including diffuse erythema and oedema. Severe balanopreputial oedema with purulent exudate occurs
