Bacteria known in animal infectious diseases can cause challenges in human diagnostic laboratories. We present pitfalls in the identification and susceptibility testing of Staphylococcus hyicus, a pathogen that typically causes exudative epidermitis in pigs. In this case, the coagulase-positive staphylococcus isolated from a septic patient was misidentified as Staphylococcus aureus.

Five aborted fetuses from a mature sixth-parity sow with severe greasy pig disease as a gilt, were submitted for diagnostic evaluation. Necropsy of the fetuses revealed serogelatinous edema in the SC connective tissue of the ventral abdominal region (especially around the umbilicus), exaggerated amounts of serohemorrhagic fluid in the abdominal, pleural, and pericardial cavities, and hemorrhagic kidneys, with diminished consistency. Staphylococcus hyicus was isolated in pure culture from liver, lung, kidney, and brain tissues and from abdominal, pleural, pericardial, and gastric fluids.

Staphylococcus hyicus subsp hyicus (coagulase-positive) was isolated in pure culture from the left coxafemoral and right shoulder joints of a 4-week-old pig with septic polyarthritis. Present taxonomic criteria and DNA-DNA hybridization studies with reference strains were utilized to identify the isolate. There were no clinical signs or generalized skin lesions of porcine exudative epidermitis noticed in this pig.

Staphylococcus hyicus (subspecies hyicus) was isolated as the only pathogenic organism from two independent cases of dermatitis of the lower parts of the limbs (grease heel) in horses. The organism was recovered together with other pathogenic staphylococci from similar conditions in two other horses of different origins. These conditions were characterised by epidermolysis, alopecia and crust formation. They responded quickly to antibiotic treatment. The organism was also isolated from a long standing case of "summer eczema" which healed without antibiotic treatment, and from a horse with derm

A total of 33 Staphylococcus hyicus-cultures from piglets with exudative epidermatitis were analyzed for the presence of antibiotic resistance plasmids. Four small plasmids encoding resistances to chloramphenicol, macrolide-lincosamide-antibiotics, streptomycin or tetracyclines could be identified in plasmid-curing and plasmid-transformation experiments. For further characterization these plasmids were digested with restriction endonucleases. This led to the construction of a specific restriction map for each of the 4 plasmids. On the basis of their restriction maps, these 4 antibiotic resista

Lame pigs, up to 12 weeks of age, were necropsied to establish a diagnosis. Of 175 pigs examined, 165 were confirmed to have arthritis by histopathological examination of joint tissues. Lesions were most common in the elbow and tarsal joints and least common in the joints of the feet. Typically, there was severe fibrinopurulent inflammation of synovial membranes regardless of the bacteria isolated. A bacterial aetiology was found in 114 (69%) of the 165 pigs. In arthritic pigs in which an aetiology was established the causative agents were Staphylococcus hyicus ssp hyicus (24.6%), Streptococcu

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus hyicus is a coagulase-variable Staphylococcus spp. well-known by veterinarians since it is the major agent of a severe cutaneous infection in piglets called exudative epidermitis. In other species the symptoms of infection are quite different. Human cases are uncommon but seem to occur more frequently after repeated contacts with farm animals.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 58-year-old man suffering from debilitating subacute lumbar pain, in whom diagnosis of infectious spondylodiscitis was based on spine MRI and positive microbiological results. A strain of

Exudative epidermitis (EE) in piglets, caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus hyicus, remains a major concern for the swine industry, particularly due to antimicrobial resistance. Bacteriophages represent a promising alternative treatment. This study aimed to isolate and characterize phages infecting S. hyicus from EE-affected swine farm environments in Quebec. Four novel phages (BQE1, BQE4, BQE7, BQL4) were isolated from water and manure samples. All produced clear plaques (<1 mm) and reached titers of 108-1010 PFU/mL. Electron microscopy revealed myovirus morphology. Their genomes (115.4-134

Exudative epidermitis (EE) causes substantial morbidity and mortality in piglets. This study investigated the microbial ecology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and genomic diversity of Staphylococcus hyicus associated with an EE outbreak in an Australian piggery. Lesion swabs from 20 affected piglets yielded 160 bacterial isolates (including S. hyicus and cohabiting species). Isolates underwent species identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of S. hyicus for AMR/virulence gene profiling and core-genome SNP analysis to assess genomic relatedness.

Staphylococcus hyicus isolates (n=207), including 150 exfolitative toxigenic and 57 non-toxigenic strains, were examined for their susceptibility to 13 antimicrobial agents by using the dehydrated 96-well MIC panel system. The frequency of their resistance to penicillin and ampicillin was 76.8% (159/207), followed by erythromycin (56%, 116/207), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (28.5%, 59/207), chloramphenicol (24.2%, 50/207), kanamycin (19.8%, 41/207), and doxycycline (1.4%, 3/207). Resistance to chloramphenicol and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was significantly higher in toxigenic strains than

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus hyicus causes porcine exudative epidermitis, predominantly affecting suckling and weaned piglets. This bacterium produces various exfoliative toxins (ExhA, ExhB, ExhC, ExhD, SHETA, and SHETB), which are responsible for the clinical manifestations of exudative epidermitis. However, treatment failure is common due to frequent antimicrobial resistance in porcine strains. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the genes encoding exfoliative toxins and assess the antimicrobial resistance profiles of S. hyicus. A total of 17 S. hyicus isolates were collected from piglets

Staphylococcus hyicus is one of the opportunistic pathogens that cause infections to animals. Early studies have demonstrated that S. hyicus is the causative agents of exudative epidermitis in pigs, arthritis in horses and chicken, mastitis in cow, and bacteremia, sepsis and multiple organ failure in humans. Here, we report the isolation and identification of a representative S. hyicus isolate, named JLHN15, from a pig farm with a disease characterized by bacteremia, suppurative pneumonia and fibrinous pericarditis. Our results indicate that JLHN15 is a pathogenic coagulase-positive Staphyloco

Staphylococcus hyicus is a significant pathogen in swine, primarily causing exudative epidermitis. Addressing S. hyicus infections requires both the characterization of virulence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in farm-recovered isolates. This study aimed to characterize the virulence, AMR, and biofilm formation of S. hyicus isolates from Spanish swine farms. A total of 49 isolates were analyzed, originating from animals with cutaneous, reproductive, and systemic clinical signs. Half of the isolates (49.0%) were positive for at least one virulence factor (VF) gene, with SHETA being the most

Greasy pig disease or exudative epidermitis, a generalized or localized skin disease affecting piglets, is mainly caused by Staphylococcus hyicus, although other staphylococcal species such as Staphylococcus aureus may also induce disease. Piglets with skin lesions can be treated systemically with antibiotics. However, antimicrobial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics are now frequently observed in S. hyicus and S. aureus isolates. In this study, the antibacterial activity of plant essential oils as well as their ability to potentiate the effect of several antimicrobial compounds against S. hyi

BACKGROUND: Erythritol, a sugar alcohol, has been reported to suppress the in vitro growth of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus coagulans.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether erythritol suppresses the growth of Staphylococcus hyicus, a major pathogen causing porcine exudative epidermitis, and to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in erythritol-induced S. hyicus growth suppression.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An in vitro turbidity assay was performed to assess the effect of erythritol on the growth of 26 S. hyicus strains, including a reference strain JCM 2423 and the 25 w

A 6-week-old, parent-reared peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) was presented with spastic hypertonus of its hind limbs of unknown origin and duration. Radiologic examination revealed smooth periosteal reactions ventrally at thoracic vertebrae 5 to 7. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography identified the swelling as inflammation; antibiotic, antimycotic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic treatments were initiated, and vitamins and minerals were supplemented. Because the bird's condition did not improve after 10 days, it was euthanatized and submitted for postmortem examination. On histopatholo

Staphylococcus hyicus is the etiological agent of exudative epidermitis (EE) in suckling and weaned piglets, which is an endemic disease of concern for animal health and welfare on swine farms. Staphylococcus hyicus is not widely studied, and there is no recent scientific literature on Canadian strains. In a preliminary study, we presented an Eastern Canadian S. hyicus strain isolated from an EE case and bearing a plasmidic tet(L) gene conferring resistance to tetracyclines, one of the most commonly used antibiotics in Canadian swine farms. The current study characterized the tet(L)-bearing pl

Sudden outbreaks of exudative epidermitis (EE) are managed with antibiotics. This retrospective observational study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus (S.) hyicus strains isolated in Northern Italy between January 2022 and April 2025. Isolates were recovered from clinical cases submitted to IZSLER diagnostic laboratories. To ensure data independence, only one isolate per pig farm or strains from the same farm isolated at least 6 months apart were included in the final analysis. Strains resulted from bacteriological examinations on skin swabs (65) and synovial fluid (1

Staphylococcus hyicus (S. hyicus), as the main pathogen of exudative epidermitis (EE) in piglet, can cause a wide variety of diseases, ranging from bovine mastitis, chicken arthritis and even human sepsis, which has brought serious threats to animals and human. The potential threat of S. hyicus infection to both public and animal health has aroused great concern. The aim of our study was to explore the efficacy of insect defensin DLP4 against S. hyicus ACCC 61734 in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro efficacies of DLP4 against S. hyicus ACCC 61734 showed high antibacterial activity (0.92 μM), a l
