Parametric versus nonparametric statistical tests: the length of stay example.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined selected effects of the proper use of nonparametric inferential statistical methods for analysis of nonnormally distributed data, as exemplified by emergency department length of stay (ED LOS). The hypothesis was that parametric methods have been used inappropriately for evaluation of ED LOS in most recent studies in leading emergency medicine (EM) journals. To illustrate why such a methodologic flaw should be avoided, a demonstration, using data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), is presented. The demonstration shows how inappro

Nonparametric statistical approach to wind farm siting in Poland using GIS.

The present work examines the influence of environmental, topographical, and natural factors on the operational parameters of wind farms in Poland. Motivated by the ongoing transition to renewable energy and recent regulatory changes, the analysis utilises a comprehensive dataset of all wind farms in Poland, 2585 wind turbines. In statistical analysis, two grouping parameters were applied-wind farm area (0-5 km2, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 and 25-30 km2) and the power capacity of single turbines (0-1 MW, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 MW)-to assess spatial and technical variability. A range of non-parametric statistic

fMRI bold signal analysis using a novel nonparametric statistical method.

We present in this article a novel analytical method that enables the application of nonparametric rank-order statistics to fMRI data analysis, since it takes the omnipresent serial correlations (temporal autocorrelations) properly into account. Comparative simulations, using the common General Linear Model and the permutation test, confirm the validity and usefulness of our approach. Our simulations, which are performed with both synthetic and real fMRI data, show that our method requires significantly less computation time than permutation-based methods, while offering the same order of robu

The use of parametric vs. nonparametric tests in the statistical evaluation of rating scales.

In psychiatric studies, treatment efficacy is usually measured by rating scales. These scales have ordinal (rank) level and the statistical evaluation of the scale scores should be performed with nonparametric rather than parametric tests. In recent years, nonparametric statistical procedures for repeated measures have been developed for the evaluation of clinical trials in psychiatry. To assess the frequency of application of nonparametric tests in psychiatric trials, an analysis was performed on all treatment studies with panic disorder patients (DSM-III/III-R) that could be traced in the li

Experimental analysis of stereotypy with applications of nonparametric statistical tests for alternating treatments designs.

INTRODUCTION: Stereotypy is common in individuals with developmental disabilities and may become disruptive in the context of instruction. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to embed brief experimental analyses in the context of reading instruction to evaluate effects of antecedent and consequent variables on latencies to and durations of stereotypy. METHOD: We trained a reading instructor to implement a trial-based functional analysis and a subsequent antecedent analysis of stimulus features for an adolescent with autism in a reading clinic. We used alternating treatments designs with a

Statistical Nonparametric fMRI Maps in the Analysis of Response Inhibition in Abstinent Individuals with History of Alcohol Use Disorder.

Inhibitory impairments may persist after abstinence in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using traditional statistical parametric mapping (SPM) fMRI analysis, which requires data to satisfy parametric assumptions often difficult to satisfy in biophysical system as brain, studies have reported equivocal findings on brain areas responsible for response inhibition, and activation abnormalities during inhibition found in AUD persist after abstinence. Research is warranted using newer analysis approaches. fMRI scans were acquired during a Go/NoGo task from 30 abstinent male AUD and 30 he

The Effect of Arch Stiffness on the Foot-Ankle Temporal Kinematics during Gait Termination: A Statistical Nonparametric Mapping Study.

This study compares foot-ankle temporal kinematics characteristics during planned and unplanned gait termination (PGT and UGT) in subjects with different arch stiffnesses (ASs) based on the statistical nonparametric mapping (SnPM) method. By measuring three-dimensional arch morphological parameters under different loading conditions, 28 healthy male subjects were classified and participated in gait termination (GT) tests to collect metatarsophalangeal (MTP) and ankle-joint kinematics data. The two-way repeated-measures ANOVA using SnPM was employed to assess the impacts of AS on foot-ankle kin

Voxel-based morphometry of comorbid schizophrenia and learning disability: analyses in normalized and native spaces using parametric and nonparametric statistical methods.

We employed voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to compare the distributions of grey matter found in structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans of patients with comorbid learning disability with schizophrenia, schizophrenia alone, learning disability alone, and normal controls. Our primary aim was to replicate a previous region of interest (ROI) finding that comorbids and schizophrenics belong to the same population. Nonparametric analysis in normalized space showed no significant differences in grey matter distribution between the comorbid and schizophrenia groups. Furthermore, this an

Smooth semi-nonparametric (SNP) estimation of the cumulative incidence function.

This paper presents a novel approach to estimation of the cumulative incidence function in the presence of competing risks. The underlying statistical model is specified via a mixture factorization of the joint distribution of the event type and the time to the event. The time to event distributions conditional on the event type are modeled using smooth semi-nonparametric densities. One strength of this approach is that it can handle arbitrary censoring and truncation while relying on mild parametric assumptions. Extending Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion for Testing Conditional Independence.

The Conditional Independence (CI) test is a fundamental problem in statistics. Many nonparametric CI tests have been developed, but a common challenge exists: the current methods perform poorly with a high-dimensional conditioning set. In this paper, we considered a nonparametric CI test using a kernel-based test statistic, which can be viewed as an extension of the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC). We propose a local bootstrap method to generate samples from the null distribution H0:X⫫Y∣Z. The experimental results showed that our proposed method led to a significant performance i

Comparison of state occupation, entry, exit and waiting times in two or more groups based on current status data in a multistate model.

We propose mean absolute distance-based nonparametric bootstrap tests comparing the occupation probabilities, entry, exit and waiting times in a given state in two or more groups in a multistate model. The state occupied is determined at a single inspection time for each individual. Nonparametric monotonic regression and smoothing are used to uniquely define the various marginal estimators for each group which are then compared via a mean absolute distance criterion. A detailed simulation study shows that the proposed tests all have close to nominal size and reasonable power. An illustrative a

Modeling duration of overtaking between non-motorized vehicles: A nonparametric survival analysis based approach.

The use of non-motorized vehicles in urban city has improved the convenience of short-distance travel and reduced traffic pollution. However, the overtaking behaviour of non-motorized vehicles impacts traffic safety and efficiency significantly. The objective of this study is to model the durations of overtaking behaviour in the non-motorized vehicle exclusive lane. A total of 3010 overtaking events of non-motorized vehicles were extracted from two locations in Chengdu, China. The nonparametric survival analysis was conducted to model the overtaking duration of non-motorized vehicles. The cate

Analysis of cerebral infarction pattern in computed tomography images of patients with internal carotid artery stenosis.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: An unbiased and quantitative analysis of lesion patterns in patient groups is described and applied to the analysis of infarction patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred forty-two computed tomographic images of patients with ischemic stroke were registered to an average computed tomographic brain image, which was used as template. Lesions were segmented manually and averaged per category of internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. Thus, patterns of lesion distribution were formed. Differences then were analyzed using nonparametric statistics. This analysis was co

Group sequential testing of a treatment effect using a surrogate marker.

The identification of surrogate markers is motivated by their potential to make decisions sooner about a treatment effect. However, few methods have been developed to actually use a surrogate marker to test for a treatment effect in a future study. Most existing methods consider combining surrogate marker and primary outcome information to test for a treatment effect, rely on fully parametric methods where strict parametric assumptions are made about the relationship between the surrogate and the outcome, and/or assume the surrogate marker is measured at only a single time point. Recent work h

[Histamine-releasing action of x-ray contrast media in rats in vivo].

The effect of roentgen contrast media (RCM)--50% bilignost, 76% triombrast, 80% iodamide-380, on degranulation of peritoneal mast cells in rats was studied. It was found that 20 minutes after intravenous injections of RCM the content of intracellular histamine significantly decreased. This effect depended on the drug dose and increased in the order: triombrast, iodamide, triiotrast, bilignost. Different sensitivity of animals to the histamine-releasing effect of RCM was detected by using the nonparametric method of mathematical statistics. The number of "sensitive" animals was 50-75%.

An Empirical Bayes Mixture Model for Effect Size Distributions in Genome-Wide Association Studies.

Characterizing the distribution of effects from genome-wide genotyping data is crucial for understanding important aspects of the genetic architecture of complex traits, such as number or proportion of non-null loci, average proportion of phenotypic variance explained per non-null effect, power for discovery, and polygenic risk prediction. To this end, previous work has used effect-size models based on various distributions, including the normal and normal mixture distributions, among others. In this paper we propose a scale mixture of two normals model for effect size distributions of genome-

Descriptive quantitative analysis of hallux abductovalgus transverse plane radiographic parameters.

Although the transverse plane radiographic parameters of the first intermetatarsal angle (IMA), hallux abductus angle (HAA), and the metatarsal-sesamoid position (MSP) form the basis of preoperative procedure selection and postoperative surgical evaluation of the hallux abductovalgus deformity, the so-called normal values of these measurements have not been well established. The objectives of the present study were to (1) evaluate the descriptive statistics of the first IMA, HAA, and MSP from a large patient population and (2) to determine an objective basis for defining "normal" versus "abnor
