A 2-year-old Miniature Dachshund was admitted to the hospital because of fever, frequent vomiting, and watery diarrhea. An intra-abdominal mass and a gastric ulcer were detected. At laparotomy, the omentum was yellow but not icteric, irregularly thickened, and fragile, and a large mass involving the root of the mesentery and the gastrosplenic ligament was found. The histopathologic diagnosis was steatitis, and the dog was treated with prednisolone and cyclosporine for 2.5 years. After 1.5 years, the abdominal mass was not detectable. The dog died suddenly from perforation of the small intestin

Steatitis and fat necrosis were identified in a group of 123 American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) kept in an enclosed pond and fed a diet of only fish for more than 10 years. All affected animals were outwardly healthy and had had no signs of disease in the period immediately before slaughter. The diagnosis was made at the time of commercial slaughter for harvest of meat and hides. Lesions consisted of firm yellow-brown masses distributed in fat tissue throughout the body. The histopathologic diagnosis was granulomatous steatitis, with fat necrosis, based on the finding of multinuc

A retrospective study revealed seven cases of coelomic steatitis in adult tentacled snakes (Erpeton tentaculatum), including two males and five females, between May 2014 and August 2020. Common clinical signs included death after unusual floating, generalized weakness, inappetence, reduced body condition, coelomic distension, and reproductive pathology in females. Hematology of one specimen revealed marked monocytosis and lymphocytosis with mild heterophilia (chronic and active inflammation). Gross examination identified variable degrees of intracoelomic fat necrosis in all snakes. Consistent

A 2-year-old neutered male domestic short-haired cat was presented with chronic spinal hyperesthesia and a 24-h acute progression to non-ambulatory, non-painful tetraparesis, consistent with a C1-T2 myelopathy. Physical examination, serum biochemistry, hematology, thoracic and abdominal imaging were unremarkable. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined, crescent-shaped, extra-dural, compressive, T2w/T1w/STIR hyperintense contrast-enhancing mass lesion within the dorsal and right lateral vertebral canal, from C2 to cranial C4. Mild mononuclear pleocytosis and increased protein concen

The pathogenesis of steatitis that infrequently occurs in cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles (KRT; Lepidochelys kempii) has been undetermined. The objectives of this study were to investigate the clinical (n = 23) and histologic findings (n = 11) in cold-stunned KRT, and to compare plasma concentrations of α-tocopherol (vitamin E), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and the TBARS to vitamin E (T/E) ratio (an assessment of oxidative stress) between cold-stunned KRT with clinically and/or histologically confirmed steatitis (n = 10) and free-ranging KRT (n = 9). None of the cold

The association of pancreatic disorders with fat necrosis in domestic animals is rare. This report concerns a case of cutaneous/subcutaneous necrotizing panniculitis and steatitis associated with a pancreatic adenocarcinoma in an 11-year-old male Siamese cat. Clinical investigation revealed variably sized nodules on the trunk, limbs and abdomen. Some of them were ulcerated; others showed a shiny yellow necrotic background featuring irregular sinus tracts. The cat was euthanized at the owner's request before a diagnosis could be made. At necropsy, abundant oily material resembling mustard repla

A 7-month-old male Quarter Horse was examined because of severe cachexia, which had begun 2 months earlier. The foal was emaciated and weak despite an excellent appetite. Percutaneous biopsy revealed multiple areas of subcutaneous steatitis with mineralization. Radiography demonstrated calcification of the nuchal ligament. The foal died 9 days after admission. Necropsy revealed mineralized lesions throughout the fascial planes and adipose tissues of the thorax, abdomen, and skeletal muscles, with little to no involvement of muscular tissue. Serum magnesium, copper, and thyroxine concentrations

Clinical, gross and histopathological investigations were carried out into large-scale mortalities on eastern Mediterranean bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.), farms. Fish showed only nervous signs and darkened colour. At post-mortem the liver was bronze coloured and the pyloric area waxy in consistency. There was no evidence of any other gross pathology. Histopathology showed severe hepatic necrosis and lipidosis. Peri-pancreatic lipoid tissue was heavily infiltrated with an inflammatory round cell infiltrate. Fish on all three farms had been fed on a North African pilchard diet rather than t

Nutritional steatitis (yellow fat disease) caused by vitamin E (vitE) deficiency is typically associated with diets high in unsaturated fatty acids or/and low levels of vitE. This work describes, for the first time, an outbreak of nutritional steatitis in cultured silver catfish Rhamdia quelen in Argentina. Necropsy, histopathology, bacteriology and molecular studies of the affected fish were performed. In addition, peroxide level and vitE concentration of the fish feed were measured. Affected specimens had firm, yellowish-brown dermo-hypodermal nodules located in the adipose fin and dorsal re

Bartonella henselae is increasingly associated with a variety of pathological entities, which are often similar in dogs and human patients. Following an acute flea infestation, a dog developed an unusual clinical presentation for canine bartonellosis. Comprehensive medical, microbiological, and surgical interventions were required for diagnosis and to achieve a full recovery.

OBJECTIVES: To report the presentation, treatment and outcome of dogs with granulomatous steatitis associated with total and ionised hypercalcaemia.
METHODS: Six dogs diagnosed with ionised and/or total hypercalcaemia and histologically diagnosed granulomatous steatitis were evaluated to determine the clinical signs, clinical findings, response to treatment and outcome. These cases were seen at different primary care and referral veterinary hospitals in the United Kingdom between 2019 and 2023.
RESULTS: No alternative aetiology to explain the total and/or ionised hypercalcaemia or steatitis

The purpose was to describe a case of retrobulbar steatitis and meningitis in a cat caused by otitis media, otitis interna and an inflammatory polyp in the middle ear. Investigations included ophthalmic and neurological examinations, haematology and biochemistry, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and aerobic, anaerobic bacterial and fungal culture of material from the middle ear. A 6-year-old female neutered domestic-short-haired cat presented with right-sided exophthalmos and resistance to retropulsion. Anisocoria, reduced corneal sensation and oculocephalic

Large numbers of adult Nile crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus (Laurenti), died from pansteatitis during autumn and winter 2008 in the lower Letaba and Olifants River gorge in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Consequently, the health status of fish from these waters was investigated. The study presents the pathological findings in fish inhabiting these rivers within the boundaries of the Park. Changes typical of steatitis were diagnosed in many of the larger specimens of sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), caught within the Olifants River gorge. These fish carried large amo

Fatal infections with the rare COUG strain of the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii were recently detected for the first time in four southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) exhibiting severe protozoal steatitis. The objectives of this study were to describe new COUG strain infections in sea otters, investigate the potential contributory role of a recently discovered parasite-infecting narnavirus (Apocryptovirus odysseus) in these infections, assess the potential contribution of vitamin E deficiency in the development of systemic steatitis, and explore the utility of serotyping for strai

Liposarcomas are rare malignant tumors showing adipocytic differentiation. We report a well-differentiated liposarcoma in a 6-y-old, male neutered cat with a prominent inflammatory component and metastatic spread to the lungs. The patient was initially presented because of fever, lethargy, and a firm subcutaneous inguinal mass. A Tru-cut biopsy of the mass revealed a mixture of well-differentiated adipocytes and lymphoplasmacytic-histiocytic inflammation, interpreted as panniculitis. The mass was surgically excised but recurred 4 mo later. A second excisional biopsy yielded similar histologic

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Yellow fat disease or steatitis is characterised by a local or general inflammation of fat tissue and is occasionally found in horses. Diagnosis is challenging because of the wide range of nonspecific clinical signs.
OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical signs, treatment, outcome and ultrasonographic findings in horses with steatitis.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study (January 2008 to January 2015).
METHODS: History, clinical signs, ultrasonographic findings, diagnosis, treatment and outcome were recorded.
RESULTS: Twenty cases (18 horses, 2 donkeys; 9 mares, 9

An 8-year-old cat was presented for an acute history of anorexia, marked abdominal pain, and hyperthermia. Ultrasonography showed a cecal perforation with focal steatitis and adjacent free gas bubbles, consistent with focal peritonitis. Surgery confirmed the imaging findings. An enterectomy was performed with the removal of the cecum and ileocolic valve, and anastomosis between the ileum and colon was performed. Histology revealed transmural enteritis and chronic severe pyogranulomatous peritonitis with intralesional plant fragments.
