Stereolithography for craniofacial surgery.

Advances in computer technology have aided in the diagnostic and clinical management of complex congenital craniofacial deformities. The use of stereolithographic models has begun to replace traditional milled models in the treatment of craniofacial deformities. Research has shown that stereolithography models are highly accurate and provide added information in treatment planning for the correction of craniofacial deformities. These include the added visualization of the complex craniofacial anatomy and preoperative surgical planning with a highly accurate three-dimensional model. While the s

The use of stereolithography for an unusual patellofemoral disorder.

A patient with habitual patellar dislocation which was not treated successfully by the Elmslie-Trillat procedure is described. In the knee, a unique morphologic feature of the patellofemoral joint was suspected as a cause, and a stereolithographic model was produced from the patient's computed tomography data to determine the pathologic features. Because the solid model confirmed the speculation, additional surgery was done to modify the geometry of the joint. In the surgery, cancellous bone was removed below the cartilage, and the geometry of the cartilage was modified with the subchondral bo

Leaching behaviour of stereolithography 3D-printed microfluidics.

Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing has become a standard tool to produce microfluidic structures, thanks to advancements in both 3D printer technology and resin materials. Used across many applications, SLA-printed microfluidics are often exposed to a variety of solvents, giving rise to potential leaching from the printed structure (in the form of unreacted resin components) that can potentially interfere with device functionality. In this study, we investigated the leaching behavior of SLA-printed structures from both external surfaces (under static conditions) and microfluidic surfaces (und

Personalized Baghdadite scaffolds: stereolithography, mechanics and in vivo testing.

An ongoing challenge in the field of orthopedics is to produce a clinically relevant synthetic ceramic scaffold for the treatment of 'critical-sized' bone defects, which cannot heal without intervention. We had developed a bioactive ceramic (baghdadite, Ca₃ZrSi₂O₉) and demonstrated its outstanding bioactivity using traditional manufacturing techniques. Here, we report on the development of a versatile stereolithography printing technology that enabled fabrication of anatomically-shaped and -sized Baghdadite scaffolds. We assessed the in vivo bioactivity of these scaffolds in co-delivering of b

Facile fabrication of degradable, serrated polyethylene diacrylate microneedles using stereolithography.

Microneedles have the potential for minimally invasive drug delivery. However, they are constrained by absence of rapid, scalable fabrication methods to produce intricate arrays and serrations for enhanced adhesion. 3D printing techniques like stereolithography (SLA) are fast, scalable modalities but SLAs require non-degradable and stiff resins. This work attempts to overcome this limitation by utilizing a poly (ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGDA, F3) resin and demonstrating its compatibility with a commercial SLA printer. FESEM images showed high printing efficiency of customized bioinks (F3)

Orbital floor repair using patient specific osteoinductive implant made by stereolithography.

The orbital floor (OF) is an anatomical location in the craniomaxillofacial (CMF) region known to be highly variable in shape and size. When fractured, implants commonly consisting of titanium meshes are customized by plying and crude hand-shaping. Nevertheless, more precise customized synthetic grafts are needed to meticulously reconstruct the patients' OF anatomy with better fidelity. As alternative to titanium mesh implants dedicated to OF repair, we propose a flexible patient-specific implant (PSI) made by stereolithography (SLA), offering a high degree of control over its geometry and arc

Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing of a bladder device for intravesical drug delivery.

Intravesical instillation therapy is an alternative approach to oral medications for the treatment of severe bladder diseases, offering high drug concentrations at the site of action while minimising systemic side effects. However, therapeutic efficacy is often limited because of the short residence time of the drug in the bladder and the need for repeated instillations. This study reports, for the first time, the use of stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing to manufacture novel indwelling bladder devices using an elastic polymer to achieve extended and localised delivery of lidocaine hydrochlor

A 'print-pause-print' protocol for 3D printing microfluidics using multimaterial stereolithography.

Methods to make microfluidic chips using 3D printers have attracted much attention because these simple procedures allow rapid fabrication of ready-to-use products from digital 3D designs with minimal human intervention. Printing high-resolution chips that are simultaneously transparent, biocompatible and contain regions of dissimilar materials is an ongoing challenge. Transparency allows for the optical inspection of specimens containing cells and labeled biomolecules inside the chip. Being able to use different materials for different layers in the product increases the number of potential a

Advanced dental surgeries using fused filament fabrication and stereolithography printing: Case reports.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of digital imaging can now be combined with additive three-dimensional (3D) printing, changing traditional clinical dentistry, especially in challenging cases. Visualizing the bone and soft tissue anatomy using computed tomography (CT) and intraoral scanning generated digital files that can be further processed for 3D printing. Among the popular 3D printing approaches, fused filament fabrication (FFF) and stereolithography (SLA) are broadly used due to their rapid production, precision, and ease of use. METHODS: The current case series outlines three challenging

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa--oral rehabilitation using stereolithography and immediate endosseous implants.

Dental management of patients with epi-dermolysis bullosa (EB) is challenging because of the severe soft tissue lesions associated with this disease. A case history is presented where two immediate endosseous implants were placed in the mandible of a patient with recessive dystrophic EB using computer-aided technology to plan the surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation. After a 24-month follow-up, the prosthesis was stable with healthy asymptomatic soft tissue around the implants. The stereolithographic model provides a precise and noninvasive copy of the mandibular and maxillary arches of patie

Large-Scale Stereolithography Precision Manufactured Solid Cone-Jet Emitters for Electrospray Mass Spectrometry.

An electrospray emitter is a crucial component for sample introduction at the front-end of ESI-MS. Its development plays a key role in enhancing analytical sensitivity and pushing forward biological discoveries. Herein, based on stereolithography printing, a high-throughput approach for large-scale precision manufacture of solid cone-jet emitters (SCONE) was developed. As opposed to classical tapered-tip emitters, the SCONE emitter has a solid cone inside, supporting an enhanced ionization efficiency and high electrospray stability. Based on stereolithography printing's precision, flexible and

Rapid Fabrication of Sterile Medical Nasopharyngeal Swabs by Stereolithography for Widespread Testing in a Pandemic.

The 3D printing of nasopharyngeal swabs during the COVID-19 pandemic presents a central case of how to efficiently address a break in the global supply chain of medical equipment. Herein a comprehensive study of swab design considerations for mass production by stereolithography is presented. The retention and comfort performance of a range of novel designs of 3D-printed swabs are compared with the standard flocked-head swab used in clinical environments. Sample retention of the 3D swab is governed by the volume, porosity density, and void fraction of the head as well as by the pore geometry.
