Involvement of the sternocostal joints was investigated in a series of 46 males and 18 females following median sternotomy annually in a 5-year period and compared to 62 age- and sex matched control subjects after one year solely. Both groups had a mean age of 49.2 years. The degenerative chondroarthropathy of sternocostal joints was 1.69-times more frequent in heart operated upon patients as compared to control persons. Based on radiographic findings the degenerative chondroarthropathies were classed in 0 to 3 severity groups. Were seen articular space narrowing in 95.4%, osteophytes of the m

BACKGROUND: Members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) family are secreted proteins that regulate skeletal development. TGF-β signaling is critical in embryonic development of the annulus fibrosus (AF) of the intervertebral disc (IVD). To address the question of the role of TGF-β signaling in postnatal development and maintenance of the skeleton, we generated mice in which Tgfbr2 was deleted at 2-weeks of age in Aggrecan (Acan)-expressing cells using inducible Cre/LoxP recombination.
METHODS: Localization of Cre recombination was visualized by crossing Acantm1(cre/ERT2)Crm mice to

Injury to the sternocostal synchondrosis of the first rib is quite rare. We report one such case in a 50-year-old man with nonunion of the first sternocostal synchondrosis accompanied by synovitis of the sternoclavicular joint. He first underwent arthroscopic surgery of the left sternoclavicular joint. Postoperatively, the patient's symptoms decreased by half, but another pain and crepitus at the inferior lateral portion of the sternoclavicular joint developed. Since MRI and functional CT reexaminations revealed nonunion of the first sternocostal synchondrosis, resection arthroplasty of the fi

Sixteen patients with painful tender swelling in the region of the sternocostal joint (SCJ) are reported and analysed against the background of a review of 106 previously reported patients with Tietze's syndrome. Seven patients fulfilled all the diagnostic criteria for Tietze's syndrome. The radiographic findings and/or the history of these patients suggested that local strain generated by respiration is a pathogenetic factor. Nine patients had a systemic arthritic disorder, skin disease, or psoriasis in their family. They differed from the 7 patients with local involvement and from those revi

INTRODUCTION: Some open surgical methods describe complete sternocostal dissection with subsequent resynthesis. Lack of consolidation with painful sternocostal instability and retrosternal dislocation of sternal rib tips are possible complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients with symptomatic unilateral sternocostal dislocation were included in this study. After diagnosis, confirmed by three-dimensional computed tomography (CT), patients underwent open surgery. All affected ribs were reset and fixed to the sternum with the aid of titanium implants.
RESULTS: The patients had, on ave

Tietze's syndrome (TS) is an inflammatory disorder characterised by painful, non-suppurative swelling in the sternocostal or sternoclavicular joint. The aetiology of TS is unknown. Herein, we described a case of isolated enthesitis in the sternocostal joint in a 42-year-old male patient whose clinical course led to the diagnosis of TS. A 42-year-old male Japanese patient (HLA-B27 negative) presented with chronic anterior chest wall pain. Mild swelling and tenderness were found in the right, third sternocostal joint (rt.3STCJ). No other arthralgia was present. Ultrasonography (US) of the rt.3ST

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a rare syndrome that is characterized by hyperostosis and soft tissue ossification between the clavicles and the anterior part of the upper ribs. This syndrome frequently is found in the case of palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), especially in Japan. There have been few published reports, however, of Tc-99m MDP bone imaging findings in PPP. Eleven patients with PPP who were suspected to have sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis were studied with Tc-99m MDP whole body bone imaging. Bone images were abnormal in 11 patients. Abnormal radionuclide concentrations wer

A 77-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease presented with left chest pain. Physical examination revealed tenderness at her second left sternocostal joint. There was no skin rash. Chest CT revealed hyperostosis of the sternocostal joint, and cervical MRI showed vertebral osteosclerosis and osteolysis. 99mTc-MDP bone scintigraphy showed an increased activity in the sternocostal joint and vertebral column. The patient was diagnosed with SAHPO syndrome according to the diagnostic criteria. Her chest pain was relieved after oral administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Although pai

OBJECTIVES: To determine (a) the influence of HIV in developing osteoarticular infections in intravenous drug abusers (IVDAs) and (b) the differences between the clinical features of osteoarticular infections in IVDAs and a control group of non-IVDAs.
METHODS: A comparative study of the clinical features of osteoarticular infections in all HIV positive and HIV negative IVDAs admitted to the departments of rheumatology and internal medicine during a 10 year period was carried out. The joint infections of all IVDAs, irrespective of HIV status, were compared with those of a control group of non-

Tietze's syndrome is a benign, self-limiting arthropathy, without purulent character. The disease most often involves articulations: sternocostal, sternoclavicular, or costochondral joints. The characteristic symptoms are tenderness, pain and edema involving one of the aforementioned joints on one side. Diagnosis of Tietze's syndrome is based on physical examination (increase of palpation tenderness in the affected joint), laboratory tests (increase of inflammatory parameters) and imaging studies (USG, MRI). Differential diagnosis of Tietze's syndrome is based on exclusion of costal cartilage

BACKGROUND: The anterior chest wall (ACW) involvement is characteristic of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome, yet little research has focused on its magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings.
PURPOSE: To characterize the MRI features of the ACW in patients with SAPHO syndrome.
METHODS: Seventy-one patients with SAPHO syndrome and ACW involvement evidenced by bone scintigraphy were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The ACW region was scanned using sagittal, axial, and oblique coronal Dixon T2-weighted sequences and axial Dixon T1-weighted sequence

The manubriosternal joint is commonly involved in rheumatoid arthritis but rarely gives rise to symptoms. A patient is reported with seropositive, erosive rheumatoid arthritis, who developed symptoms resembling pleuritic pain, arising from synovitis of the manubriosternal joint. Treatment with intra-articular steroid injection resolved these symptoms rapidly.

A 31-year-old woman developed bilateral painful red eyes. A slit-lamp examination revealed anterior diffuse scleritis. She had been diagnosed with palmoplantar pustulosis 2 years before. Further evaluation revealed hyperostosis of the sacroiliac joint and inflammation of the bilateral sternoclavicular joints and right sternocostal joint. Ultimately, she was diagnosed with SAPHO syndrome by rheumatologists after excluding other causative diseases. Scleritis associated with SAPHO syndrome is relatively uncommon. An identification of any systemic symptoms and early consultation with rheumatologis

The pectoralis major (PM) is a broad muscle commonly divided into three regions, which contribute uniquely to shoulder stability and movement. The PM muscle regions likely respond differently to stretch, but this has never been shown in vivo. We used shear wave elastography to assess the stretch response of different PM muscle regions during shoulder abduction and external rotation in 20 healthy male participants. Participants' shoulder was passively rotated through their range of motion in 5.7° increments and shear wave velocities (SWV) were obtained for each muscle region. A piece-wise model

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (IPPFE) is a rare interstitial lung disease characterized by restricted ventilation and upper-lobe fibroelastosis. Historically, ankylosing spondylitis has been implicated in upper-lobe fibrosis and ventilatory impairment due to chest wall restriction, and impaired thoracic motion has recently been appreciated in IPPFE. We hypothesized that thoracic joint abnormalities (costovertebral, manubriosternal, and sternocostal joints) contribute to the impaired thoracic motion in patients with IPPFE.
METHODS: Seventeen patients with IPPFE and 15

Thirteen patients with similar painful tender swelling in the region of the sternocostal joint (SCJ) are reported. X-ray tomography revealed changes which might explain the swelling in 11 patients. Three patients had anatomical variants of the sternum. One of these and a further two patients had marginal osteophytes at the affected SCJ, as signs of osteoarthrosis. Six patients with psoriasis, pustulosis palmoplantaris, or psoriasis in the family had past or present arthritis of the involved SCJ or the manubriosternal joint. Tomography was found to be a useful confirmatory examination in patien

Synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is a rare clinical entity involving musculoskeletal and dermatologic systems. Its main features are prominent inflammatory cutaneous and articular manifestations. Anterior chest wall pain, more commonly at sternoclavicular and sternocostal joints, along with palmoplantar pustulosis and acne can point to this uncommon syndrome. Here, we report a case of a 15-year-old female, who presented with swelling at the anterior chest wall, was referred for the bone scan. Bone scintigraphy and single-photon emission computed tomograp
