Micropropagation of Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bert.) in RITA®.

Stevia rebaudiana Bert. is a plant that contains noncaloric sweeteners highly appreciated in the food industry. However, there is a high demand for propagules to establish commercial plantations, and the conventional reproduction types for this species are inefficient. Micropropagation is a technique that allows obtaining a large number of plants and can be used to meet the demand in the field. However, it requires in vitro propagation techniques such as temporary immersion systems (SIT) to increase yield and reduce production costs. This chapter describes an effective protocol for the large-s

Human neural synergy when combining stevia with a flavour modifier and the neural effects of sucrose vs stevia.

There is a drive to increase the acceptability of sweeteners such as stevia in foods and reduce any off tastes or bitterness. One way to do this is to add flavour modifiers. We have shown previously that adding a flavour modifier to the artificial sweetener sucralose resulted in synergistic neural activity which could underpin improved taste sensation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to see if adding a flavour modifier to stevia would also reveal synergistic neural effects. Healthy adults (N = 34, Mean age 25 yrs.) participated in a within-subjects study examining the neural effects of st

First reported stevia-containing human urinary calculi.

While most kidney stones are made of typical substances like calcium oxalate, patients with uncommon metabolic disorders or exposures/ingestions can crystallize rare materials in their urinary tracts, leading to unusual stone compositions. Six stones in 5 individuals were evaluated when their composition did not match known lithogenic substances. We report the first ever identified human urinary calculi composed of steviol, a metabolite of the no-calorie sweetener, stevia.

Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) extract ameliorates insulin resistance by regulating mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in the skeletal muscle of db/db mice.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a growing health problem worldwide, is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin resistance and defective insulin secretion by pancreatic β-cells. The skeletal muscle is a central organ that consumes most of the insulin-stimulated glucose in the body, and insulin resistance can damage muscles in T2DM. Based on a strong correlation between diabetes and muscles, we investigated the effects of stevia extract (SE) and stevioside (SV) on the skeletal muscle of diabetic db/db mice. METHODS: The mice were administered saline, metf

The Neural and Perceptual Effects of Stevia During Retronasal Occlusion.

We have recently shown that occluding retronasal pathways with a nose clip reduces both the subjective and neural responses to sucrose, suggesting the involvement of retronasal pathways in sucrose perception. However, how other sweet tastes such as stevia might also be affected by retronasal occlusion at the subjective and neural level is unknown. We examined the neural activity to stevia with a nose clip on (blocking retronasal pathways) and nose clip off, in a robust sample of healthy adults (N = 34, mean 25 years). Neural activity to stevia was reduced with the nose clip on in the olfactory

[Effect of stevia on the picture of peripheral blood under exposure to vibration].

There were investigated changes in the peripheral blood of rabbits under prolonged exposure to vibration (5, 10, 20, 30 days). In a separate series of experiments, the nature of changes in the peripheral blood was investigated under the combined action of vibration and stevia leaves. Contained in stevia biologically active substances were found to accelerate metabolism in bone marrow stem cells, promote the compensatory ability of the organism, thereby providing the resistance of the body to the vibration factor.

Steviol effect, a glycoside of Stevia rebaudiana, on glucose clearances in rats.

Stevia rebaudiana, a South American plant normally used as a natural herbal sweetener, has been suggested as exerting beneficial effects on human health, including as an antihypertensive and antihyperglycemic. The present experiment was undertaken to evaluate the renal excretion of steviol, the aglycone of several natural products extracted from the leaves of S. rebaudiana, and to clarify the actual participation of this compound on the renal excretion of glucose in rats, which has been previously suggested as the preferential action of steviol on the Na+-glucose renal tubular transport system

Anthelmintic activity of Stevia multiaristata extract against Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The available anti-parasitic treatment is mostly limited to a continuous administration of albendazole. However, due to its numerous side-effects and efficacy of around 50%, there is a need to find new drugs to improve the treatment for this disease. In the current study, the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of a Stevia multiaristata extract against E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) was demonstrated. Stevia multiaristata extract (100 and 50 μg mL−1) caused a quick viability

Effect of Ethyl Acetate on the Defatting of Leaves in the Extraction of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni.

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: The process for producing purified steviol glycosides from Stevia rebaudiana leaves (stevia) generally involves pretreatments, extraction, purification and crystallization. Pre-extraction or defatting can sometimes be a part of this process. It can remove impurities of low polarity, such as chlorophyll and fatty compounds. Nonpolar solvents can be used to defat stevia leaves. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: In this study, we investigated ethyl acetate as a pre-extraction solvent for the defatting of dried and crushed stevia leaves. We compared pure ethyl acetate and water-saturate

Chemical Analysis and Antidiabetic Potential of a Decoction from Stevia serrata Roots.

A decoction of the roots (31.6-316 mg/kg) from Stevia serrata Cav. (Asteraceae) as well as the main component (5-150 mg/kg) showed hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic effects in mice. The fractionation of the active extract led to the isolation of dammaradiene acetate (1), stevisalioside A (2), and three new chemical entities characterized by spectroscopic methods and named stevisaliosides B-D (3-5). Glycoside 2 (5 and 50 mg/kg) decreased blood glucose levels and the postprandial peak during oral glucose and insulin tolerance tests in STZ-hyperglycemic mice. Compounds 1-5 were tested also again
