A multiligament, internal brace, coaptationless stifle reconstruction technique for feline stifle luxation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel, coaptationless surgical technique for the treatment of multiligament stifle injuries (MLSI). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: A total of 23 cats presenting with a rupture of two or more ligaments stabilizing the stifle. METHODS: Specific surgical techniques were used to reconstruct each deficient ligament. The TightRope procedure was utilized to treat the cranial cruciate ligament and the lateral collateral ligament injuries. Intra-articular reconstruction was adopted for the caudal cruciate ligament. The medial collateral ligament was recons

Sonography of the canine stifle.

When diagnosing disease of the stifle in dogs ultrasonography is a good addition to clinical and radiological examination. Radiology can evaluate the bony aspects of the joint and their relationship to each other. In contrast, sonography allows visualization of the soft tissue. For most evaluations the 7.5 MHz linear scanner is suited best. Normal stifles of 58 dogs of different breeds were evaluated using a standardized examination procedure. This procedure had been derived from that used in humans. The stifle is divided into several regions which are examined and evaluated. These are the sup

Evaluation of an arthroscopic stifle lever for stifle joint distraction in toy breed dogs.

Arthroscopy has become an attractive modality in the diagnosis and treatment of joint diseases in toy breed dogs. However, the application of arthroscopy is limited by small joint space. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of a stifle lever for joint distraction during stifle arthroscopy in toy breed dogs. Paired stifles (n = 32 each) collected from 16 cadavers of toy breed dogs were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the stifle lever group or the external manipulation group. All stifles underwent arthroscopic cranial cruciate ligament transection, and the visualization of the medi

Surgical treatment of canine stifle disruption using a novel extracapsular articulated stifle stabilizing implant.

A 5-year-old Labrador retriever mixed breed dog was presented for an acute non-weight-bearing left hind limb lameness. A stifle disruption was diagnosed. The patient was treated using a novel extracapsular articulated stifle stabilizing implant (Simitri™). Twelve weeks after surgery the patient had full range of motion of the affected stifle and had begun to return to pre-injury activity. This is the first reported case of this condition being surgically managed successfully in this manner.

Stifle arthrodesis in two cats.

Two Domestic Shorthaired cats were admitted after sustaining multiligamentous injuries of the stifle joint. In one cat, prosthetic ligamentous reconstruction was unsuccessful at maintaining normal stifle stability. Both cats were treated with stifle arthrodesis using internal fixation with a plate and screws without external coaptation. In one case, arthrodesis was achieved using a 2.7 mm 16-hole dynamic compression plate placed medially. In the second case, a 2.7 mm 14-hole dynamic compression plate was placed cranially. No major complications were noted, and both cats were able to return to

Arthritis of the canine stifle joint.

A survey of cadaver material was undertaken in order to determine the prevalence of arthritis of the canine stifle joint. One hundred and fifty unselected cadavers were obtained from veterinary practices for this purpose, and their stifle joints were radiographed and dissected to discover abnormalities. Thirty-one dogs (20 per cent) had stifle arthritis and in all except one the lesions were characteristic of osteoarthritis. In the exceptional case infection was the cause. A mechanical derangement was present in 20 of the 54 affected joints, in the form of rupture of the anterior cruciate liga

Collateral ligament injury and stifle luxation.

Isolated collateral ligament injury is uncommon in dogs and cats and often occurs concurrently with injuries to other stifle ligaments. These injuries are either treated with primary reconstruction of the individual ligaments or with transarticular pin or splint stabilization of the joint until adequate periatricular fibrosis is achieved. Prognosis is generally good if adequate joint stability has been achieved.

[Arthroscopic studies of the stifle of dogs].

Diagnosis by arthroscopy and arthrotomy of 36 dogs with stifle lesions (18 left, 18 right) assessed by physical and radiological examination were compared. 48 of 68 observations during arthrotomy had been diagnosed before by arthroscopy (accuracy 70.6%). Arthroscopical diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL) (n = 11), partial ACL (n = 11), avulsion of m. extensor digitorum longum (n = 2) and immune-mediated arthritis (n = 2) confirmed the diagnosis by arthrotomy in all patients. Arthroscopy failed to detect meniscal lesions in 50% (18 of 36). Nine of 20 normal medial and lateral

Arthroscopy of the canine stifle joint.

An arthroscopic examination of 59 canine stifle joints, both normal and diseased, was carried out. Endoscopically the stifle joint was divided into five main anatomical compartments - the suprapatellar pouch, femoropatellar joint, medical compartment, intercondylar notch and the lateral compartment. It was possible to identify all the intra-articular structures using a single infrapatellar approach and the technique allowed an assessment of the non-osseous structures of the joint. Pathological changes were appreciated. eg, hypertrophy of the synovial membrane, articular cartilage fibrillation

Effect of anesthetizing individual compartments of the stifle joint in horses with experimentally induced stifle joint lameness.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of sequential anesthesia of the individual compartments of the equine stifle joint on lameness induced by intra-articular deposition of interleukin (IL)-1β. ANIMALS: 6 horses. PROCEDURES: For each horse, baseline hind limb lameness was first evaluated. A randomly selected compartment of 1 stifle joint was then injected with IL-1β to induce synovitis and lameness; subsequently, the same compartment was anesthetized with 2% mepivacaine hydrochloride, and lameness was reevaluated. Two weeks later, baseline lameness was evaluated, and lameness was similarly ind

Intra-articular Fibrolipoma of the Stifle in a Dog.

A 12 yr old male castrated miniature Australian shepherd dog presented for surgical consultation of historical bilateral medial patellar luxations with a 3 mo history of an acute onset of a left pelvic limb lameness. Physical examination confirmed medial patellar luxations and a mass effect of the left stifle medially. Radiographs showed medial distension of the joint capsule by a soft tissue opacity. Fine-needle aspirate of the left stifle revealed a mesenchymal cell population. Left medial parapatellar stifle arthrotomy found a fatty mass, which was excised at its base. A benign fibrolipoma

Synovial hemangioma in the stifle joint of a dog.

Synovial hemangioma was diagnosed in an 8-year-old castrated male Belgian Sheepdog with lameness of 3 months' duration. Pain, soft-tissue swelling, and hemarthrosis were localized to the left stifle joint. Projections of synovial membrane with reddish-purple nodules, excised via arthrotomy, were composed histologically of variably sized vascular channels that were lined by well-differentiated endothelial cells and separated by fibrous septa. Distension of some channels resulted in endothelial disruption, thrombosis, hemorrhage, necrosis, and focal spindle-cell proliferation. The limb was amput

Stifle joint alterations in dogs with patellar luxation.

Patellar luxation results in abnormal positioning of the patella outside the trochlear groove, leading to microscopic and macroscopic alterations within the canine stifle joint. This study evaluated histopathological changes in the articular cartilage and joint capsule of dogs affected by patellar luxation, along with gross intra-operative findings observed during surgical correction. Articular cartilage and joint capsule samples from fourteen affected stifle joints and two control joints were examined histologically. Erosive lesions of articular cartilage were observed across multiple stifle

Stifle osteochondritis dissecans in snow leopards (Uncia uncia).

Three snow leopard (Uncia uncia) cubs, female and male siblings and an unrelated female, had lameness attributed to osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions noted at 6, 8, and 10 mo of age, respectively. All cubs were diagnosed with OCD via radiographs. The sibling cubs both had lesions of the right lateral femoral condyles, while the unrelated cub had bilateral lesions of the lateral femoral condyles. Subsequently, OCD was confirmed in all three cases during surgical correction of the lateral femoral condyle lesions via lateral stifle arthrotomies, flap removal, and debridement of the defect s

Development and testing of a stifle function score in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a quantitative stifle function score (SFS) in dogs with unilateral cranial cruciate ligament disease by combining clinical measures and functional tests. The objective of this study was to compare the proposed SFS to a symmetry index (SI) calculated from objective ground reaction forces (GRFs). We hypothesized that the SFS would have a strong correlation with SI. METHODS: Dogs with surgically and nonsurgically treated unilateral cranial cruciate ligament rupture and dogs with no known musculoskeletal problems were included in the st

Primary synovial osteochondromatosis of the stifle in an English Mastiff.

A two-year-old, 97 kg, male neutered English Mastiff was evaluated for left pelvic limb lameness of five months duration localized to the stifle joint. Following radiographic, computed tomographic and arthroscopic examination, the lameness was subsequently diagnosed as being caused by primary synovial osteochondromatosis. In total, 194 osteochondral bodies were removed using arthroscopy in combination with a mini-arthrotomy. Histology and immunohistochemistry of the loose osteochondral fragments confirmed the diagnosis with a moderately high degree of differentiation and low cellularity. Nucle

Aspects of the pathology of stifle bone cysts in the horse.

The gross and histological appearance of subchondral bone cysts in six Thoroughbred or partbred horses is described. The lesions were all situated in the centre of the medial femoral condyle and were not associated with any other damage to the articular surface of the femorotibial or femoropatellar joints. In three cases the cysts were unilateral but had an early non-cystic lesion present in the opposite stifle. All the cysts had a narrow channel at their distal extremity which communicated with the femorotibial joint. The more recently developed ones were fluid filled and contained fibrous st
