Superdiffusion in stochastic processes with long-range memory.

We investigate non-Markovian stochastic processes with long-range temporal memory described by a generalized Langevin (Mori-Zwanzig) equation with a power-law memory kernel. Special attention is paid to the critical regime where the system parameters lie on the boundary separating stable and unstable dynamics, leading to diffusionlike behavior with memory. We derive analytical expressions for the asymptotic behavior of the process and show that, under appropriate conditions on the memory kernel, the system exhibits superdiffusive scaling. In particular, we establish an explicit relation betwee

Hyperedge approximation for stochastic processes on higher-order networks.

Graphs provide a natural framework to describe processes shaped by pairwise interactions among agents. But many dynamical systems involve interactions within groups of three or more agents. Here, we develop the "[Formula: see text]-hyperedge approximation," an analytical framework for stochastic processes on regular hypergraphs, in which each individual belongs to [Formula: see text] groups of size [Formula: see text]. The framework accommodates both higher-order interactions that determine payoffs and higher-order processes for updating states in response to payoffs. For evolutionary games on

Exact and Approximate Constants of Motion in Stochastic Contact Processes.

We study a variety of stochastic contact processes-directly related to models of rumor and disease spreading-from the viewpoint of their constants of motion, either exact or approximated. As in deterministic systems, constants of motion in stochastic dynamics make it possible to reduce the number of relevant variables, thereby confining the set of accessible states and facilitating analytical treatment. For processes of rumor propagation based on the Maki-Thompson model, we show how to construct exact constants of motion as linear combinations of conserved quantities in each elementary contact

Stochastic process description of lipid flip-flop.

Since lipid bilayers are self-assembled macroscopic aggregates, their constituent lipid molecules can spontaneously transition between the two leaflets. This so-called "flip-flop" is almost universally described via first-order chemical kinetics: the net "flux" leaving a given leaflet is proportional to the number of lipids it contains. However, this model ignores interactions, such as those arising from packing or non-ideal mixing, and restricting the analysis to macroscopic rate equations misses fluctuations. Here, we employ tools from the field of stochastic processes to examine the impact

Classification in postural style based on stochastic process modeling.

We address the statistical challenge of classifying subjects as hemiplegic, vestibular or normal based on complex trajectories obtained through two experimental protocols designed to evaluate potential deficits in postural control. The classification procedure involves a dimension reduction step where the complex trajectories are summarized by finite-dimensional summary measures based on a stochastic process model for a real-valued trajectory. This allows us to retrieve from the trajectories information relative to their temporal dynamic. A leave-one-out evaluation yields a 79% performance of

Stochastic equation for a jumping process with long-time correlations.

A jumping process, defined in terms of the jump size and waiting time distributions, is presented. The jumping rate depends on the process value. The process, which is Markovian and stationary, relaxes to an equilibrium and is characterized by a power-law autocorrelation function. Therefore, it can serve as a model of 1/f noise as well as of the stochastic force in the generalized Langevin equation. This equation is solved for noise correlations approximately 1/t ; the resulting velocity distribution has sharply falling tails. The system preserves memory about the initial condition for a very

Large deviations of piecewise-deterministic Markov processes with application to stochastic calcium waves.

We prove a large deviation principle for piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMPs). This is an asymptotic estimate for the probability of a trajectory in the large size limit. Explicit Euler-Lagrange equations are determined for computing optimal first-hitting-time trajectories. The results are applied to a model of stochastic calcium dynamics. It is widely conjectured that the mechanism of calcium puff generation is a multiscale process: with microscopic stochastic fluctuations in the opening and closing of individual channels generating cell-wide waves via the diffusion of calcium and

Ant communities in disturbed subtropical landscapes: is climate more important than stochastic processes?

Functional trait-based approaches have provided advances in the understanding of community assembly rules. Broad generalisations remain, however, limited due to the idiosyncratic nature of taxa and ecosystems, especially in tropical regions. We use fine scale resolution (30 m grid) environmental variables and community surveys from nearly 100 secondary tropical forest sites to study niche-based or neutral assembly mechanisms in ground dwelling ants. This provides a unique opportunity for understanding fine scale drivers of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity in a region characteri

Community Disassembly in a Fragmented Tropical Landscape Driven by Both Deterministic and Stochastic Processes.

Deforestation is a key driver of habitat loss, transforming extensive forested areas into fragmented, isolated patches with reduced biodiversity. While the patterns of species loss from fragmentation are well documented, the underlying processes driving these patterns remain unclear. We sought to identify the community processes driving the disassembly of tropical insectivorous bat communities in response to forest fragmentation in Malaysia. We measured species richness and four functional diversity metrics across assemblages in continuous forests and forest fragments of varying sizes. Eight t

Stochastic processes driving cyanobacterial temporal succession in response to typhoons in a coastal reservoir.

Typhoons associated with heavy rainfall events, potentially triggering harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) dominated by cyanobacteria in coastal reservoirs. These blooms deteriorate water quality and produce toxins, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems. However, the ecological mechanisms driving cyanobacteria communities in response to typhoons remain unclear. To address this gap, we investigated a coastal reservoir with high-frequency sampling during two typhoon seasons. We employed comprehensive statistical methods under neutral and evolutionary theories to analyze environmental dynamics and c

Role of stochastic processes in maintaining discrete strain structure in antigenically diverse pathogen populations.

Many highly diverse pathogen populations appear to exist stably as discrete antigenic types despite evidence of genetic exchange. It has been shown that this may arise as a consequence of immune selection on pathogen populations, causing them to segregate permanently into discrete nonoverlapping subsets of antigenic variants to minimize competition for available hosts. However, discrete antigenic strain structure tends to break down under conditions where there are unequal numbers of allelic variants at each locus. Here, we show that the inclusion of stochastic processes can lead to the stable

Stochastic processes govern gut bacterial community assembly in a Schistosoma mansoni-transmitting snail, Biomphalaria straminea.

BACKGROUND: Studies have revealed extensive taxonomic classifications and patterns of gut microbial diversity in snails, with limited focus on community assembly processes. To better understand the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes in the snail gut microbial assembly and their associations with snail fitness, we used the freshwater snail Biomphalaria straminea as a model and analyzed the gut bacterial communities from 118 samples via high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. RESULTS: This study reveals that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota dominate the gut microbiot

Stochastic processes govern bacterial communities from the blood of pikas and from their arthropod vectors.

Vector-borne microbes influence pathogen transmission and blood microbiomes, thereby affecting the emergence of infectious diseases. Thus, understanding the relationship between host and vector microbiomes is of importance. In this study, we investigated the bacterial community composition, diversity and assembly of the flea (Rhadinopsylla dahurica vicina), torsalo (Hypoderma curzonial), and the blood and gut of their shared pika host, Ochotona curzoniae. Bartonella, Sphingomonas and Bradyrhizobium were enriched in blood, while Wolbachia and Fusobacterium were more abundant in fleas and torsal

Stochastic model and optimal controls of an active tracking particle with information processing.

Living systems often function with regulatory interactions, but the question of how activity, stochasticity, and regulations work together for achieving different goals still remains puzzling. We propose a stochastic model of an active tracking particle with information processing, where the entropy production and information flow are discussed, with the generalized fluctuation theorem serving as a benchmark for verifying the probability setups. Based on the model, the system performance, in terms of the first passage steps, the total energy consumption, and the thermal efficiency, is analyzed

Dynamics of a stochastic tumor-immune interaction system with an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

This paper investigates the dynamical behavior of a class of stochastic tumor-immune interaction systems incorporating Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) processes. We first establish a four-dimensional deterministic ordinary differential equation (ODE) model describing the interactions among tumor cells, natural killer (NK) cells, CD8+T cells, and dendritic cells, then extend this model by incorporating OU processes to account for intrinsic stochastic perturbations with memory effects in the tumor microenvironment. Subsequently, the existence and local stability of equilibrium points in the deterministi

Trickle or clumped infection process? A stochastic model for the infection process of the parasitic roundworm of humans, Ascaris lumbricoides.

The importance of the mode of acquisition of infectious stages of directly-transmitted parasitic helminths has been acknowledged in population dynamics models; hosts may acquire eggs/larvae singly in a "trickle" type manner or in "clumps". Such models have shown that the mode of acquisition influences the distribution and dynamics of parasite loads, the stability of host-parasite systems and the rate of emergence of anthelmintic resistance, yet very few field studies have allowed these questions to be explored with empirical data. We have analysed individual worm weight data for the parasitic

Stochastic and deterministic processes shape the fungal communities and flavor characteristics during spontaneous fermentation of abernet franc.

This study elucidates the impact of vintage climatic variation on the interplay between stochastic and deterministic processes governing fungal community assembly during spontaneous fermentation of Cabernet Franc grapes and its consequential effects on wine flavor profiles. Employing high-throughput sequencing (fungal dynamics), HS-SPME-GC-MS (volatile metabolomics), Spearman correlation (fungi-flavorant relationships), and ecological null modeling (neutral vs. niche processes), the study tracked succession across vintages. Key findings revealed vintage-driven divergence: Cladosporium dominate

Entropy-Based Stochastic Optimization of Multi-Energy Systems in Gas-to-Methanol Processes Subject to Modeling Uncertainties.

In gas-to-methanol processes, optimizing multi-energy systems is a critical challenge toward efficient energy allocation. This paper proposes an entropy-based stochastic optimization method for a multi-energy system in a gas-to-methanol process, aiming to achieve optimal allocation of gas, steam, and electricity to ensure executability under modeling uncertainties. First, mechanistic models are developed for major chemical equipments, including the desulfurization, steam boilers, air separation, and syngas compressors. Structural errors in these models under varying operating conditions result

Learning stochastic process-based models of dynamical systems from knowledge and data.

BACKGROUND: Identifying a proper model structure, using methods that address both structural and parameter uncertainty, is a crucial problem within the systems approach to biology. And yet, it has a marginal presence in the recent literature. While many existing approaches integrate methods for simulation and parameter estimation of a single model to address parameter uncertainty, only few of them address structural uncertainty at the same time. The methods for handling structure uncertainty often oversimplify the problem by allowing the human modeler to explicitly enumerate a relatively small
