A study was carried out of 121 elderly edentulous individuals living in institutionalised homes in the Lothian Region, Scotland to determine the prevalence of yeasts and associated oral disease. Clinical examinations found that 65(54%) of the individuals suffered from denture stomatitis, and yeasts were recovered from 51(78%) of these individuals. The main yeasts isolated were Torulopsis glabrata and Candida albicans. Culture of saliva samples produced a slightly higher recovery rate of yeasts compared with swabbing of the floor of mouth and palate. The number of cigarettes smoked per day had

A hitherto undescribed clinical and histologic entity occurring in the palate of 13 denture-wearing patients is described. Clinically it is characterized by the presence of small yellowish areas in the hard palate, which on pressure yield a whitish creamy material through multiple openings. The surrounding mucosa may exhibit various degrees of erythema. The histologic changes are characterized by the presence of intramucosal fistulae lined with unkeratinized squamous epithelium. The content of the fistulae, which corresponds to the creamy material expelled, consists of desquamated epithelial c

Denture stomatitis (DS) is one of the frequent oral diseases caused by multiple factors among denture wearers and is an erythematous lesion of the mucosa in the denture-bearing area, which is a limited and non-specific damage that seriously endangers the oral health of denture wearers. Traditional drug treatment for DS is effective, but it is prone to the development of drug-resistant strains. Therefore, it is important to find new treating options. For the prevention and treatment of DS, there are various methods such as direct administration of azole and polyene antibiotics to the mucosal le

The clinical and pathological study was performed in order to determine the histopathological and cytoimmunological characteristics of denture stomatitis. All specimens were biopsy materials from seventeen patients with denture stomatitis. Normal palatal mucosae from ten patients served as the control. In addition to the usual staining methods, naphtol AS-D chloroacetate esterase stain and peroxidase-antiperoxidase method were used to detect mast cells and plasma cells. Denture stomatitis could be divided into atrophic and hyperplastic types. The former showed a smooth and atrophic mucosa. The

The effectiveness of denture stomatitis (DS) treatment should be evaluated by associating clinical and mycological parameters. Although widely used in clinical studies, the Newton classification does not accurately represent the degree of severity of palatal inflammation in terms of extent of the lesions and intensity of the erythema. Therefore, a modified Newton classification has been proposed considering the coverage area of palatal inflammation and the erythema level. This consistent and direct ranking will help standardise randomised clinical trials, as well as the statistical comparison

Denture stomatitis is an erythematous disorder of the denture-bearing tissues, especially the maxillary hard palate. Frequently it mimics many oral lesions. Early diagnosis of the lesion is essential to assure rational therapy. A diagnostic procedure based upon the enumeration of Candida albicans appeared to be feasible. A control group of twenty fully dentate subjects with no clinical evidence of stomatitis was sampled to establish normal concentrations of C. albicans in the oral flora. Samples were taken from a triangular area of the hard palate, serially diluted in broth, and all dilutions

Denture stomatitis is a clinical inflammatory picture that is seen at oral mucosa of the upper chin of patients who use removable dentures. There are various reasons of denture stomatitis. In order to detect the presence rate of C. albicans on lesions as the most important factor and the factors which effect this situation, 41 patients (31 with denture stomatitis and 10 as controls) were chosen. The smears obtained from the hard palate of the patients were microbiologically investigated. C. albicans was found to be the causative agent in 35.4% of the cultures which have shown growth. The relat

Denture stomatitis (DS) is an inflammatory condition that affect denture wearers and is characterized by erythema of the mucosa opposing the denture. DS is often associated with oral microbiome dysbiosis. We used shotgun metagenomics to investigate the association between the denture-associated oral microbiome (DAOM) and DS in older adults living in long-term care facilities. We included participants with DS (n = 28) and age-and sex-matched removable denture wearers without signs of DS (n = 28). Clinical oral examinations were performed, and demographic and medical data were obtained from medi

UNLABELLED: Oral inflammation, such as periodontitis, can lead to endothelial dysfunction, accelerated atherosclerosis, and vascular dysfunction. The relationship between vascular dysfunction and other common forms of oral infections such as denture-related stomatitis (DRS) is unknown. Similar risk factors predispose to both conditions including smoking, diabetes, age, and obesity. Accordingly, we aimed to investigate endothelial function and major vascular disease risk factors in 44 consecutive patients with dentures with clinical and microbiological features of DRS (n = 20) and without DRS (

Candida albicans (C. albicans) biofilm is a common etiological factor in denture stomatitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of incorporating 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) as a protein repellent into a new high-impact denture acrylic (HIPA) resin on the surface roughness, solution pH, and C. albicans biofilm adhesion to the denture base. The new acrylic denture resin base was formulated by mixing MPC into HIPA resin at mass fractions of 1.5%, 3%, and 4.5%. Surface roughness was measured using a Mitutoyo surface roughness tester. C. albicans biofilm gro

PURPOSE: Denture stomatitis (DS) is a disease characterized by inflammation and erythema of the oral mucosa areas covered by the denture. Multifactorial etiological factors contribute to DS, but it seems that Candida plays the key role. The aim of the study was to evaluate the denture sonication method to: (i) increase the possibility of diagnosing patients with Candida-associated DS; (ii) detect and identify the mixed Candida spp., and (iii) determine the Candida colony forming units (CFU) and its possible relationship with DS severity, based on Newton's classification.

A retrospective study of the epidemiologic data of 4,417 subjects has been undertaken to study the possibility of a link existing between glossal central papillary atrophy (median rhomboid glossitis) and denture stomatitis. Neither the association between glossal central papillary atrophy and denture stomatitis nor the association between glossal central papillary atrophy and denture use was statistically significant. However, the correlation between wearing removable dental prostheses and finding candidal mycelia in smears from these tongue lesions was statistically highly significant. Debili

While investigation of the microbiome on natural oral surfaces has generated a wealth of information, few studies have examined the microbial communities colonizing dentures and their relationship to oral health. To address this knowledge gap, we characterized the bacterial community associated with dentures and remaining teeth in healthy individuals and patients with denture stomatitis. The microbiome compositions of matched denture and tooth plaque samples of 10 healthy individuals and 9 stomatitis patients were determined by 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. The microbial communities colonizing

The aim of this study was to isolate, quantify, identify, and compare opportunistic microorganisms (Candida and Staphylococcus genera and Enterobacteriaceae/Pseudomonadaceae families) from prosthesis-fitting surfaces, the hard palate, and mouth rinses of individuals wearing removable maxillary prosthesis with (50) and without (50) lesions of denture stomatitis (DS). The strains were collected and identified using phenotypic, biochemical and molecular tests. The counts of microorganisms were significantly higher in the group of individuals with DS (P < 0.05). C. albicans was the most frequently

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy of PADTM Plus-based photoactivated disinfection (PAD) for treating denture stomatitis (DS) in diabetic rats by establishing a diabetic rat DS model.
METHODS: The diabetic rat DS model was developed by randomly selecting 2-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats and dividing them into four groups. The palate and denture surfaces of rats in the PAD groups were incubated with 1 mg/mL toluidine blue O for 1 min each, followed by a 1-min exposure to 750-mW light-emitting diode light. The PAD-1 group received one radiation treatment, and the PAD-2 group received three ra
