Comparative study of diseases of the stomatognathic system and specific parameters of osteoporosis.

UNLABELLED: What are the specific parameters of dental health that present with modifications in osteoporosis (OP)? Both OP and a decreased bone mass can affect dental health. A low mineral density may lead to the loss of dentures because the jaw is exposed to the effects of periodontitis and without strong sustainability the teeth may lose their stability. INTRODUCTION: We compared the values of the periodontal index (IP) with a T score for women presenting with OP at menopause and those without OP. We found that there is a relation between OP and the loss of bone mass at the oral-facial lev

It Is Time for a Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation Approach: A Scoping Review on Stomatognathic Diseases in Neurological Disorders.

Patients affected by neurological disorders can develop stomatognathic diseases (SD) related to decreased bite force and quality of mastication, bruxism, severe clicking and other temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which deeply affect patients' swallowing, masticatory and phonation functions and, therefore, their quality of life. The diagnosis is commonly based on medical history and physical examination, paying attention to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) range of movements, jaw sounds and mandibular lateral deviation. Diagnostic tools such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imag

Comparative study of clinical examination, occlusal analysis and new radiological imaging procedures in patients with functional TMJ disorders.

A comparative study was made in fifty-three patients with functional diseases of the stomatognathic system and twelve healthy probands by means of anamnestic exploration, clinical examination, occlusal analysis, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Connections between functional and structural changes of the diseased stomatognathic system were found. The results showed the possibilities and applications of CT and MRI as supplementary diagnostic methods in the diagnosis of functional TMJ disorders.

INCREASING THE UPPER AIRWAY SPACE USING ORAL APPLIANCES IN PATIENTS WITH MILD SLEEP APNOEA CAUSED BY STOMATOGNATHIC DYSFUNCTIONS.

INTRODUCTION: Abnormal breathing can be caused by developmental malformations or anatomical variations in the upper airways. Stomatognathic diseases may significantly impair the patency of the upper respiratory tract. Treatment of advanced stomatognathic dysfunctions is difficult due to their multifactorial aetiology, and often involves many phases. Sleep apnoea is one of the most bothersome complications. The mainstay therapeutic strategy relies on modifying the position of the mandible against the maxilla, achieved by using different types of oral appliances. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study

Dental deafferentation and brain damage: A review and a hypothesis.

In the last few decades, neurobiological and human brain imaging research have greatly advanced our understanding of brain mechanisms that support perception and memory, as well as their function in daily activities. Knowledge of the neurobiological mechanisms behind the deafferentation of stomatognathic systems has also expanded greatly in recent decades. In particular, current studies reveal that the peripheral deafferentations of stomatognathic systems may be projected globally into the central nervous system (CNS) and become an associated critical factor in triggering and aggravating neuro

Evaluation of stomatognathic problems in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (osteogenesis imperfecta - oi) - preliminary study.

UNLABELLED: According to epidemiological data, muscular dysfunctions of the masticatory system occur in 15-23% of the population. Preventive examinations of functional disorders of the stomatognathic system are, therefore, of particular importance. A distinct group of patients exposed to dysfunctions in the area of the masticatory organ locomotor apparatus comprises those with genetic diseases characterised by disorders in collagen formation. One of such diseases is osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta that usually goes together with the former. AIM: The objective of thi

Radiographic review of anatomy and pathology of the masticator space: what the emergency radiologist needs to know.

The differential diagnosis of a masticator space (MS) lesion is broad, owing in part to the multiple structures contained within such a small region. It is also because the MS is adjacent to many of the other deep spaces within the head and neck, which can act as gateways for disease spread. Therefore, emergency radiologists must be familiar with anatomy of the MS, as well as adjacent spaces in order to provide an accurate diagnosis to the referring clinician. This article illustrates the anatomy and common pathologies within the MS using a case-based multimodality approach. Common masticator

The Anatomy of the Stomatognathic System in Different Skull Types in Dogs.

The anatomy of the stomatognathic system is important for both clinical evaluations and surgical approaches in all animal species. The aim of this study was to describe the innervation and vascularization of the stomatognathic system of the dog. Twelve dogs without a history of disease or cranial malformation were used: 4 brachycephalic, 4 mesocephalic, and 4 dolichocephalic. The dogs were dissected, and arteries, veins, and nerves related to the masticatory and swallowing components were identified. The distribution pattern of these structures in the 3 different skull types were observed. The

Fifty years of SSRI-related oral side effects: A call for interprofessional collaboration.

The oral side effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) include xerostomia, gingival bleeding, burning mouth syndrome, bruxism, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), impacting the quality of life (QoL). These stomatognathic diseases are often overlooked in clinical practice. This comment advocates interprofessional relations among physicians, pharmacists and dentists to improve the recognition, prevention and management of SSRI-related oral side effects.

A suggested universal protocol for dental examination in sports.

The athletes of any sport and level submit their bodies to constant exercise. Any given pathology can increase the risk of injury, illness, or even reduced performance. The medical examination is valuable in diagnosing existing health problems and preventing medical issues that might compromise the athlete's overall health when exercising. The stomatognathic system is not an exemption, as oral pathologies, including dental caries and periodontal diseases, are found in high incidence in sports. The need for accurate and detailed dental examination in sports leaded dentists from the European Ass

Biology and mechanics of facial asymmetries in children and youths.

There is a need for further knowledge about the normal and abnormal growth patterns of bones and teeth. Genetic make-up, as well as various types of diseases and injuries such as trauma, inflammation, radiation and chemicals may affect skeletal and dental growth sites, thereby causing faulty growth. The degree of the subsequent deformity depends not only on the type, intensity, extent and chronology of the noxious agent, but also on the site and its particular involvement in growth activity. The knowledge of what happens to the stomatognathic system when some of its parts are altered is very i

Dental anatomy and pathology encountered on routine CT of the head and neck.

OBJECTIVE: Although dental CT is not routinely performed at hospital imaging centers, dental and periodontal disease can be recognized on standard high-resolution CT of the neck and face. These findings can have significant implications with regard to not only dental disease, but also diseases of the sinuses, jaw, and surrounding soft tissues. This article serves to review dental and periodontal anatomy and pathology as well as other regional entities with dental involvement and to discuss the imaging findings. CONCLUSION: Recognition of dental and periodontal disease has the potential to aff

The biological effects of occlusal trauma on the stomatognathic system - a focus on animal studies.

The aim of this review of the literature was to assess the biological effects of occlusal trauma on the stomatognathic system focusing on animal studies. However, there are no conclusive explanations on the association between occlusal trauma and disease of the stomatognathic system. A literature survey was performed using the Medline database, covering the period from 1967 to 2012. Over 300 abstracts were reviewed, and 70 manuscripts were selected. Additional references from citations within the articles were obtained, and current textbooks were also used. This review does not include the eff

[The stomatognathic electromyographic aspects in spasmophilia].

The study intends to statuate the theoretical foundations concerning the etiopathogenesis (of endocrinological origin--tetany) of the myofacial pain dysfunction (MPD). We want to demonstrate this affirmation knowing that there is a very important correlation between the endocrine glands and the muscular stomatognathic activity. The EMG exam in tetany for the masticatory muscles proves that there is a repetitive asymmetric bioelectric activity even for the rest positions.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease and dental erosion. A case report and review of the literature.

The term gastroesophageal reflux refers to the regurgitation of gastric material into the oesophagus. When the reflux is accompanied by inflammation of the oesophageal mucosa and extra-oesophageal symptoms the complaint is classified as a pathological condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is caused by backward expulsion of the gastric content into the oesophagus. It is characterized by a complex clinical picture that may include lesions of the oesophageal mucosa and lesions of a different nature and severity of the respiratory and stomatognathic apparatus. GERD is consi

Clarification on the differential diagnosis of giant cell containing lesions of the oral and maxillofacial regions.

A broader overview of the essential differences and overlap in the histopathology and clinical presentation of giant cell containing lesions are discussed. This is an attempt to eliminate some confusions attendant to their diagnosis and possible prognosis. These lesions occur both intraosseously and extraosseously. Langhans' type giant cells have been shown not to be an exclusive preserve of tuberculoid granulomas but also of giant cell lesions. The osteoclast like lesions with the exception of giant cell tumour (GCT) are treated by local curettage while the latter is treated by radical resect

Stomatognathic System Changes in Obese Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease involving multiple organs, devices, and systems involving important changes in the stomatognathic system, such as in the orofacial muscles, temporomandibular joint, cheeks, nose, jaw, maxilla, oral cavity, lips, teeth, tongue, hard/soft palate, larynx, and pharynx. Patients with obesity indicated for bariatric surgery reportedly presented with abnormalities in the structures and function of the stomatognathic apparatus. This occurs through the accumulation of adipose tissue in the oral cavity and pharyngeal and laryngeal regions. Therefor
