Nocturnal tooth contact such as bruxism has been considered to be one of the major factors of temporo-mandibular disorders (TMD). However, little information has been reported regarding mandibular movements during bruxing, because of the limitation of the measuring method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of bruxism on the stomatognathic system. A new device for measuring nocturnal mandibular movements was developed using a PIN photodiode sensor, which was integrated with the polysomnography including both masseter and anterior temporal EMG. The maximum error of the s

BACKGROUND: Neurodegenerative diseases that affect the cerebellum, especially in elderly individuals, cause impairment of motor coordination and quality of life. The presente study evaluated the electromyographic activity and thickness of the right and left masseter and temporal muscles, and the maximum molar bite force of individuals with spinocerebellar ataxia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-eight individuals were divided into two groups: those with (n=14) and without (n=14) spinocerebellar ataxia. Data on the masticatory muscles obtained from the electromyographic activity (resting, right an

In recent years, many researchers have investigated the various factors that can influence body posture: mood states, anxiety, head and neck positions, oral functions (respiration, swallowing), oculomotor and visual systems, and the inner ear. Recent studies indicate a role for trigeminal afferents on body posture, but this has not yet been demonstrated conclusively. The present study aims to review the papers that have shown a relationship between the stomatognathic system and body posture. These studies suggest that tension in the stomatognathic system can contribute to impaired neural contr

This article analyzes differences in orthodontic and craniofacial classifications and the role of the speech-language pathologist in adequately treating those patients with varying Class II and Class III malocclusions. Other symptoms, such as those of mouth breathing and tongue position, are compared and contrasted in order to identify characteristics and treatment issues pertaining to each area. The author emphasizes a team approach to myofunctional therapy and stresses the importance of collaborative treatment.

Growth hormone (GH) is a polypeptide hormone produced by the cells of pituitary. Production of growth hormone is carried out in a pulsating manner, and the frequency and intensity of the pulses is dependent on age and gender. Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is characterized by, among others, slow growth process often from early childhood, delayed bone age. The aim of the study was to describe dental problems of children with short stature with a special attention on disorders at the craniofacial region such as decreased growth of maxilla and mandible, gnathic and bite dysfunctions, delayed tee

The anatomy of the stomatognathic system is important for both clinical evaluations and surgical approaches in all animal species. The aim of this study was to describe the innervation and vascularization of the stomatognathic system of the dog. Twelve dogs without a history of disease or cranial malformation were used: 4 brachycephalic, 4 mesocephalic, and 4 dolichocephalic. The dogs were dissected, and arteries, veins, and nerves related to the masticatory and swallowing components were identified. The distribution pattern of these structures in the 3 different skull types were observed. The

Phylogenesis, ontogenesis and anatomy explain the close relationship between temporo-mandibular joint and the middle ear and can therefore help understanding otologic symptoms such as: otalgia which often correspond to articular and muscular pain irradiation (coming from sterno-cleido-mastoid, lateral and medial pterygoid, deep layer of the masseter and temporal muscles); acouphens and ear block sensation that could be caused by a spasm extension of the manducatory (i.e. medial pterygoid) to levator and tympani tensors. These three muscles, which originate from the first branchial arch, have a

The stomatognathic system was assessed in 114 subjects with various types of idiopathic headaches. Stomatognathic system dysfunctions were recognized most frequently in patients with atypical facial pain and headache, and with mixed headache. Much less frequently these dysfunctions were present in patients with migraine or cluster headaches. The obtained results suggest that stomatognathic system dysfunctions should be considered in the pathogenesis of certain headaches.

Juvenile chronic arthritis (j.c.a) often affects the maxillo-facial complex over all in relation to jaw and temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ). In this work 35 j.c.a. patients (aged 6 to 16 years) have been selected and studied in order to detect functional and morphostructural involvement of stomatognathic apparatus and TMJ. The involvement of these structures is appeared significantly increased during j.c.a. also in patients without clinic symptoms referable to a stomatognathic apparatus pathology. Therefore an early diagnosis as well as a preventive orthognatodontic treatment are necessary to r
