New insights into the ear region anatomy and cranial blood supply of advanced stem Strepsirhini: evidence from three primate petrosals from the Eocene of Chambi, Tunisia.

We report the discovery of three isolated primate petrosal fragments from the fossiliferous locality of Chambi (Tunisia), a primate-bearing locality dating from the late early to the early middle Eocene. These fossils display a suite of anatomical characteristics otherwise found only in strepsirhines, and as such might be attributed either to Djebelemur or/and cf. Algeripithecus, the two diminutive stem strepsirhine primates recorded from this locality. Although damaged, the petrosals provide substantial information regarding the ear anatomy of these advanced stem strepsirhines (or pre-tooth-c

A primate with a Panda's thumb: The anatomy of the pseudothumb of Daubentonia madagascariensis.

OBJECTIVES: Accessory digits have evolved independently within several mammalian lineages. Most notable among these is the pseudothumb of the giant panda, which has long been considered one of the most extraordinary examples of contingent evolution. To date, no primate has been documented to possess such an adaptation. Here, we investigate the presence of this structure within the aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis), a species renowned for several other specialized morphological adaptations in the hand, including a morphologically unique third digit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We combine physi

Dental caries in living and extinct strepsirrhines with insights into diet.

Dental caries is one of the most common diseases afflicting modern humans and occurs in both living and extinct non-human primates, as well as other mammalian species. Compared to other primates, less is known about the etiology or frequency of caries among the Strepsirrhini. Given the link between caries and diet, caries frequency may be informative about the dietary ecology of a given animal. Understanding rates of caries in wild populations is also critical to assessing dental health in captive populations. Here, we examine caries frequency in a sample of 36 extant strepsirrhine species (n

Ontogeny and Microanatomy of the Nasal Turbinals in Lemuriformes.

The nasal cavity of strepsirrhine primates (lemurs and lorises) has the most primitive arrangement of extant primates. In nocturnal species, the numerous turbinals of the ethmoid bear a large surface area of olfactory mucosa (OM). In this study, we examine turbinal development in four genera of diurnal or cathemeral lemuriformes. In addition, we examined an age series of each genus to detect whether structures bearing OM as opposed to respiratory mucosa (RM) develop differently, as has been observed in nocturnal strepsirrhines. In adults, the maxilloturbinal is covered by highly vascular respi

Dietary and dental variations in the genus Lemur, with comments concerning dietary-dental correlations among Malagasy primates.

Field studies of feeding in the lemur subspecies Lemur fulvus rufus and L. f. mayottensis have revealed that feeding patterns within a single species can be markedly different, both regionally and seasonally. Thus L. f. rufus is a dietary specialist (3 plant species accounting for 80-90% of feeding time), and is highly folivorous, especially during the dry season (90% of feeding time spent eating leaves during the dry season, and 53% during the wet season). On the other hand, L. f. mayottensis is more generalized dietarily (the parts of 12 plant species accounting for 90% of feeding time), and

Neoplasia in Three Aye-Ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis).

Tumours diagnosed in three aged captive aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis), held in two different institutions, are described. A cerebral glioblastoma was diagnosed based on histological and immunohistochemical findings in one of the animals following initial presentation with bilateral mydriasis, absent pupillary reflex, head tilt and ataxia. A second animal was humanely destroyed due to impaired locomotion associated with spondylosis and a post-mortem diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma was made based on histology with further confirmation with immunohistochemical labelling for cytokeratin

Myological correlates of prosimian leaping.

Although the skeletal correlates of vertical clinging and leaping behavior in primates have been studied in great detail, myological information on this locomotor group is not readily available. We here provide relative muscle mass data for the hindlimb of four prosimian leapers, representing indriids as well as the small-bodied tarsiers and galagos. Wet weights of all hindlimb muscles, with the exception of the intrinsic muscles of the foot, were determined. For comparative purposes muscle weights were also gathered for Varecia, an arboreal quadruped, and previously unpublished dry muscle wei

Eye size at birth in prosimian primates: life history correlates and growth patterns.

BACKGROUND: Primates have large eyes relative to head size, which profoundly influence the ontogenetic emergence of facial form. However, growth of the primate eye is only understood in a narrow taxonomic perspective, with information biased toward anthropoids. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We measured eye and bony orbit size in perinatal prosimian primates (17 strepsirrhine taxa and Tarsius syrichta) to infer the extent of prenatal as compared to postnatal eye growth. In addition, multiple linear regression was used to detect relationships of relative eye and orbit diameter to life history

Primate body mass and dietary correlates of tooth root surface area.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine primate postcanine tooth root surface area (TRSA) in the context of two ecological variables (diet and bite force). We also assess scaling relationships within distinct taxonomic groups and across the order as a whole. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mandibular postcanine TRSA was measured using a three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) method for catarrhine (N = 27), platyrrhine (N = 21), and strepsirrhine (N = 24) taxa; this represents the first sample of strepsirrhines. Two different body size proxies were used: cranial geometric mean (GM) using nine linear

Membranous Support for Eyes of Strepsirrhine Primates and Fruit Bats.

Living primates have relatively large eyes and support orbital tissues with a postorbital bar (POB) and/or septum. Some mammals with large eyes lack a POB, and presumably rely on soft tissues. Here, we examined the orbits of four species of strepsirrhine primates (Galagidae, Cheirogaleidae) and three species of fruit bats (Pteropodidae). Microdissection and light microscopy were employed to identify support structures of the orbit. In bats and primates, there are two layers of fascial sheets that border the eye laterally. The outer membrane is the most superficial layer of deep fascia, and has

Can cyclone exposure explain behavioural and demographic variation among lemur species?

Madagascar has a harsh and stochastic climate because of regular natural disturbances. This history of regular cyclones has been hypothesised to have directed evolutionary changes to lemur behaviour and morphology that make them more resilient to sudden environmental change. These adaptations may include: small group sizes, high degrees of energy-conserving behaviours, generalist habitat use, small home ranges, small body size, and a limited number of frugivorous species. To date, however, no one has tested how variation in cyclone exposure across Madagascar is associated with variation in the

A remarkable cranium of Plesiopithecus teras (Primates, Prosimii) from the Eocene of Egypt.

Between 1991 and 1993 specimens of a highly distinctive primate, named Plesiopithecus teras [Simons, E.L. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 10743-10747], were found at site L-41 in late Eocene deposits of the Fayum Depression, Egypt. The most important of these specimens consists of a nearly complete skull, which facilitates the evaluation of affinities of this primate. Characteristics of the known material now demonstrate that Plesiopithecus is a prosimian, although mandibular molar morphology, in particular, bears similarity to that in molars of archaic members of Anthropoidea. Plesiopit

Seasonal changes in the parasite prevalence of a small Malagasy lemur species (Lepilemur edwardsi).

Parasitic infections can impact the fitness of individuals and can have influence on animals' population dynamics. An individuals' parasite prevalence often changes depending on external or seasonal changes, for example, rainfall and ambient temperatures, but also on internal changes, for example, changes in body condition. In this study we aimed to identify the environmental factors that may influence the intestinal parasite and ectoparasite prevalence of the folivorous Malagasy primate species, Lepilemur edwardsi, living in a seasonal dry deciduous forest. Species living in this habitat have

Elemental analysis of a tumor from a nocturnal prosimian with special emphasis on bromine.

Few natrually occurring tumors have been reported in primates. A spherical mass was noticed on the medial aspect of the thigh and caudal abdomen of a 15-year old female Perodicticus potto. The mass was surgically removed and the recovery was uneventful. Histological examination provided the diagnosis of myeloliposarcoma. Thirty-two elements were detected by chemical analysis. These are Na, K, Rb, Cs, Li, Cu, Ag, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, Ga, Si, Sn, Ti, P, Bi, V, S, Se, Mo, F, Cl, Br, Fe, Co and Ni. It has been proposed by some that tumor tissue tends to be chemically similar to embry

The role of developmental rate, body size, and positional behavior in the evolution of covariation and evolvability in the cranium of strepsirrhines and catarrhines.

Recent studies on hominin craniofacial evolution have focused on phenotypic integration or covariation among traits. Covariation is thought to significantly affect evolutionary trajectories, shaping the ways in which hominins and other primates could have evolved. However, the ways in which covariation itself evolves are not well understood. This study aims to investigate the role of phylogeny, development, body size, and positional behavior in shaping the strength of covariation in strepsirrhine and catarrhine primate crania (n = 1009, representing 11 genera). These factors may have been cata

Homologies of the toothcomb.

A recently described juvenile specimen of Avahi was supposed to show that indriines have an unreplaced deciduous canine and that the indriine toothcomb was composed only of incisors. To the contrary, this specimen demonstrates quite dramatically a growth phenomenon earlier discussed: in indriines, the anteriormost of the four deciduous lower teeth posterior to the toothcomb migrates mesially toward the toothcomb (Schwartz, '74). In this particular Avahi, this tooth has even become associated with the toothcomb. The alignment of this tooth with the toothcomb is a strictly impermanent situation

Re-evaluation of the morphocline of molar appearance in the primates.

Study of sequences of dental development and eruption of extant and applicable fossil prosimians, as well as similar data available on Anthropoidea and insectivores, indicates that the ancestral primate stock was characterized by the initial appearance of the anterior dentition, not the molars. From this primitive condition two morphoclines, not one, can be defined with the sharing of derived character states indicating sister-group relationships between Galaginae and Cheriogaleinae and between Lepilemur, Megaladapis, and Adapidae.

The Landscape of Structural Variation in Aye-Ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis).

Aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis) are one of the 25 most critically endangered primate species in the world. Endemic to Madagascar, their small and highly fragmented populations make them particularly vulnerable to both genetic disease and anthropogenic environmental changes. Over the past decade, conservation genomic efforts have largely focused on inferring and monitoring population structure based on single nucleotide variants to identify and protect critical areas of genetic diversity. However, the recent release of a highly contiguous genome assembly allows, for the first time, for

The anatomical relations of the ductus vomeronasalis and the occurrence of taste buds in the papilla palatina of Nycticebus coucang (primates, prosimiae) with remarks on strepsirrhinism.

Nycticebus coucang is typically strepsirrhine. This condition is basically the same in all prosimians except Tarsius. The rhinarium shows a labial part; the marked furrow in its median plane clefts the margin of the upper lip. The latter is attached to the gum between the median incisors by means of paired folds (not corresponding to a frenulum labii superioris). The labial cleft is continued in the sulcus papillae palatinae. The ductus vomeronasalis opens into the ductus nasoplatinus which, in turn, enters the aboral part of the sulcus palatinus. Thus strepsirrhinism provides, occasionally, a

Functional aspects of strepsirrhine lumbar vertebral bodies and spinous processes.

The relationship between form and function in the lumbar vertebral column has been well documented among platyrrhines and especially catarrhines, while functional studies of postcranial morphology among strepsirrhines have concentrated predominantly on the limbs. This morphometric study investigates biomechanically relevant attributes of the lumbar vertebral morphology of 20 species of extant strepsirrhines. With this extensive sample, our goal is to address the influence of positional behavior on lumbar vertebral form while also assessing the effects of body size and phylogenetic history. The
