Streptococcus bovis-related cholecystitis.

Acute cholecystitis is a common inflammatory condition of the gallbladder caused most commonly by Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, and Klebsiella organisms. Streptococcus bovis is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative, anaerobic coccus found as a commensal inhabitant of the digestive system in 16% of healthy people. We report a rare case of acute cholecystitis caused by S bovis and discuss its implications with regard to the two known S bovis biotypes (I & II) both of which are associated with a number of other gastrointestinal diseases.

Streptococcus bovis bacteremia: unusual complications.

Streptococcus bovis bacteremia is known to be related to neoplastic lesions of the colon. We describe a patient with several complications of S bovis bacteremia and adenocarcinoma of the colon--endocarditis, spondylodiskitis, and splenic abscess. We believe this is the eighth known case of endocarditis and diskitis caused by S bovis and the third case of endocarditis and splenic abscess by S bovis in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the colon.

Streptococcus bovis infections in pigeons.

Streptococcus bovis infection was diagnosed in pigeons from 20 lofts submitted for post mortem investigation. Clinical signs were very variable and ranged from hyperacute death to chronic lameness with arthritis. Lesions were generally unspecific except for single cases of muscle necrosis with purulent myositis. Histological examinations demonstrated the septicaemic nature of the infections. Intravenous inoculations of S. bovis resulted in prostration, long lasting loss of weight and polyuria. Microscopically purulent hepatitis and nephritis were the most characteristic lesions. After oral ino

Is Streptococcus bovis a urinary pathogen?

The Streptococcus bovis group (SBG) comprises several microorganisms associated with human infections. They have been associated with bacteremia, endocarditis, biliary tract infection, meningitis, and colorectal cancer, but their role as urinary pathogens is not well known. The objective of this investigation was to discover the incidence and clinical significance of the bacteriuria associated with this complex. A retrospective analysis of all adult patients with bacteriuria caused by SBG during the period 1995-2012 was carried out. During the study period, SBG was isolated in 153 adult patien

Streptococcus bovis Endocarditis after Colonic Polypectomy.

UNLABELLED: We describe a case of Streptococcus lutetiensis infective endocarditis occurring in a patient following colonic polypectomy. The patient had multiple risk factors for infective endocarditis including pre-existing mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation. Transoesophageal echocardiography revealed a friable mass on the posterior mitral valve leaflet, confirming the diagnosis. The patient was treated with intravenous antibiotics, successfully underwent mitral valve surgery and was discharged home for outpatient follow-up. This report details an uncommon case presentation, highlights a

Streptococcus bovis causing perforating corneal ulcer.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report the first case of Streptococcus bovis causing a perforating corneal ulcer in a healthy adult. METHODS: Observational case report. RESULTS: A healthy 77-year-old man presented with rapidly progressing corneal ulcer, resulting in perforation within 4 days. Preoperative and operative cultures isolated the same organism, S. bovis, susceptible only to vancomycin and ceftriaxone. The patient underwent a successful corneal transplantation, with histopathology revealing full-thickness necrosis and scattered bacteria. CONCLUSIONS: Although a rare path

[Streptococcus bovis endocarditis and colonic involvement].

McNeal and Blevins published the first report of Streptococcus bovis infective endocarditis in 1945. In 1951, McCoy suggested, for the first time, that an association could exist between Group D Streptococcus infective endocarditis and colon carcinoma; this association would be demonstrated later (1977) by Klein and unquestionably confirmed by several posterior works. Due to a clinical case of Streptococcus bovis infective endocarditis, which we had the opportunity of diagnosing, a review is made of the existent literature about the association between infection by this agent and the presence

Experimental Streptococcus bovis infections in pigeons.

Thirty pigeons were experimentally infected with Streptococcus bovis using an intravenous infection model. Ninety percent of the inoculated pigeons developed clinical disease. Disease signs included acute death, inability to fly, lameness, inappetence, emaciation, polyuria, and the production of slimy, green droppings. At necropsy, the septicemic character of the disease was evident. Typical lesions included extensive well-circumscribed areas of necrosis in the pectoral muscle, tenosynovitis of the tendon of the Musculus pectoralis profundus, and arthritis of the stifle, tibiotarsal, or should

[Streptococcus bovis septicemia and colonic cancer].

The authors report the case of a patient who developed a Streptococcus Bovis septicemia in the post-operative course of a surgical cure of an incarcerated umbilical hernia. There were no other complaints. A barium enema showed a malignant tumor of the descending colon. There were hepatic metastases. No complementary treatment was undertaken. The patient died shortly after. In the literature colonic proliferative lesions in association with this germ is reported in a total of 36% of proliferative lesions (15% of cancers and 21% of adenomas). It is concluded that the discovery of a malignant or

[The importance of Streptococcus bovis systemic infections].

Streptococcus bovis is relatively common cause of bacteremia and endocarditis, especially in older persons, or in patients that have some kind of chronic disease. These infections are frequently connected with malignant, potentially malignant, or benign colorectal neoplasia. Hematogenous dissemination of Streptococcus bovis could result with various clinical manifestations, namely purulent meningitis, brain abscess, osteomyelitis, spondylodiscitis, and many different kinds of infections in AIDS patients are reported. In this report, two patients hospitalized at the Departement of Infectious Di

Streptococcus bovis meningitis: report of 2 cases.

We describe 2 cases of Streptococcus bovis meningitis and review the 9 cases previously reported. This microorganism is a rare cause of meningitis in which there are no distinctive clinical or laboratory features. The Gram stain of the CSF is usually negative. Ten of the 11 cases had some underlying disease or comorbid condition that predisposed to S bovis infection: gastrointestinal disorder, endocarditis, CSF leak, polymyalgia rheumatica, and mandibular block. Treatment with high-dose penicillin is usually adequate.

Streptococcus bovis septicemia and large bowel neoplasia.

Streptococcus bovis septicemia is a relatively uncommon entity that is associated with an increased incidence of colonic neoplasms. Three of four patients with S. bovis endocarditis subsequent to septicemia underwent colonoscopy. The fourth patient underwent a barium enema and a proctoscopic examination. Polyps were found in three patients, and adenocarcinoma of the colon in one. Patients with S. bovis endocarditis should be considered at high risk for colonic neoplasms. Screening colonoscopy is recommended for these patients, and follow-up colonoscopy may be warranted.

Streptococcus bovis bacteremia and underlying gastrointestinal disease.

Twenty-six adults with Streptococcus bovis endocarditis and ten with bacteremia alone were studied to determine possible portals of entry. Of 36 patients (17 with endocarditis, eight with bacteremia alone), 25 had gastrointestinal lesions or manipulation. In 22, the gastrointestinal tract appeared to be the source of S bovis bacteremia. Four patients had either carcinoma of the colon (two) or potentially malignant villous adenomas (two) when first seen because of S bovis bacteremia. None of these, nor two other patients with benign colonic polyps, had bowel-related symptoms or signs prior to a

Bacterial complications of strongyloidiasis: Streptococcus bovis meningitis.

We report the case of a 64-year-old veteran who had Streptococcus bovis meningitis as a result of a long latent Strongyloides infection that became acute when he was treated with prednisone. We reviewed 38 reported cases of serious bacterial infections associated with strongyloidiasis. Patients most frequently had nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. Of these 38 patients, 21 (55%) had meningitis, and 28 (73%) had bacteremia that was polymicrobial in 3 cases (8%). Other sites of infection included lung, bone marrow, ascites, mitral valve, and lymph node. Most infections were due to enteric gr

[Streptococcus bovis in a surgical wound and a colonic neoplasm].

The association of colorectal carcinoma and septicemia or endocarditis by Streptococcus bovis is well known. Nonetheless, other localizations of infection by Streptococcus bovis have not been associated with colorectal carcinoma. The case of association of colon neoplasm with infection by Streptococcus bovis localized in the surgical wound of resection of a prostate adenoma by the transvesical route carried out four months previously is presented. Possible intraoperative bacteremia colonizing the surgical wound due to colic compression during surgery may have been the cause. This localization

Antibiotic treatment of Streptococcus bovis infections in pigeons.

The antibiotic susceptibility pattern of 5. bovis strains isolated from pigeons was studied. In vitro, S. bovis strains were sensitive to penicillins, macrolides, lincomycin, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol and nitrofurans. However, the prevalence of acquired resistance against tetracyclines was approximately 40%. Sulphonamides and trimethoprim had little in vitro activity against 5. bovis while activity of the quinolone enrofloxacin and the aminoglycoside antibiotics, neomycin and gentamicin, were in or near to the intermediate range. The comparative efficacy of 5 antimicrobials administered v
