Lemierre syndrome is characterized by thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) secondary to bacterial pharyngitis or tonsillitis. Though antibiotic use has made this a rarer syndrome, it can nevertheless manifest in patients presenting with pharyngitis. Herein, we describe a 20-year-old male patient with no relevant medical history presenting with signs concerning for pneumonia and was ultimately diagnosed with Lemierre syndrome with Streptococcus constellatus bacteremia. Complications included IJV thrombus with presumed septic emboli to the lungs. The patient was discharged on ampi

A 60-year-old male presented to our institution for abdominal pain and was later admitted to the intensive care unit for shock, acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, and acute kidney injury. He was subsequently found to have a large left-sided pleural effusion with empyema secondary to Streptococcus constellatus. With the emerging threat and growing prevalence of Streptococcus anginosus group pathogens, there is now greater clinical importance in identifying viridans streptococci at the species level. While immunosuppressed individuals are at greater risk of opportunistic pathogens, this case p

This report describes a case of chronic and deep pyodermitis in a 4-year-old male dog with a 3-month skin problems history that had been treated unsuccessfully with fluoroquinolone therapy, prescribed by a private medical veterinary practice, without an early diagnosis. Microbiological examination and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed in our laboratory (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) and a diagnosis of Streptococcus constellatus-associated pyoderma in the dog was made. A new antimicrobial treatment, with tetracyclines, was designed after the definitive diagnosis and antimicr

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus constellatus and Streptococcus intermedius in subgingival dental plaque biofilms may contribute to forms of periodontitis that resist treatment with conventional mechanical root debridement/surgical procedures and may additionally participate in some extraoral infections. Because systemic antibiotics are often used in these clinical situations, and little is known of the antibiotic susceptibility of subgingival isolates of these two bacterial species, this study determined the in vitro susceptibility to six antibiotics of fresh S. constellatus and S. intermedius clini

Streptococcus constellatus inhabits the healthy human gastrointestinal tract and oral microbiome; however, the incidence of this species becoming opportunistically pathogenic has increased in recent decades. S. constellatus has the potential to cause severe pyogenic infections requiring combination antibiotic therapy or surgical intervention. Some virulence processes in S. constellatus, such as genetic competence, are regulated through quorum sensing (QS), facilitated by its 16-mer competence stimulating peptide (CSP). Several target residues on the CSP molecule were identified that can be mut

A 69-year-old woman with orbital cellulitis secondary to odontogenic Streptococcus constellatus was transferred to the authors' institution for surgical management of infection refractory to intravenous antibiotics. She underwent debridement with preservation of the globe, recovering full motility. Visual recovery was limited by optic nerve ischemia. This case supports the importance of urgent surgical drainage in necrotizing orbital infections secondary to odontogenic Streptococcus constellatus.

Streptococcus constellatus infection is a rare cause of myocardial abscess. The complication of cerebritis is also rare. We report a case of S. constellatus bacteremia in a 21-year-old woman who developed fever and watery diarrhea 7 days prior to admission. Computed tomography of the brain showed severe effacement of the cerebral sulci, narrowing of the ventricular system, and severe brain swelling. Echocardiography showed a cystic lesion of about 2 cm(2) over the left atrium. Mannitol and dexamethasone were administered. Hyperventilation was performed. Intravenous penicillin G and ceftazidime

A total of 18 'Streptococcus milleri' strains including the ATCC type strains of Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus constellatus and Streptococcus intermedius were compared with Streptococcus oralis ATCC10557 for their ability to induce infective endocarditis in catheterized rats. Three days after intravenous injection of 10(8) colony-forming units all 8 S. anginosus strains tested produced infective vegetations and bacteremia in almost all rats whereas 5 S. constellatus strains and the S. oralis strain produced infective vegetations and bacteremia less frequently and 5 S. intermedius stra

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic Liver Abscesses (PLA) are the most common type of visceral abscess. They generally develop in a context of biliary disease or hematogenous seeding, but a complete diagnostic work-up is always required in order not to miss other important causes, including above all malignancies of the gastro-intestinal tract.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a particular case of a 80 years-old immunocompetent woman hospitalized for sepsis. At the end of the diagnostic process, Streptococcus constellatus (Sc) was identified as the cause of sepsis, multiple PLA were found together with

Streptococcus constellatus is a microorganism that lives commensally in the oropharyngeal region, urogenital region, and intestinal tract. However, it can cause infection in patients with certain predisposing factors. Rarely, this microorganism can cause a brain abscess. Thalamic localization of brain abscesses is much rarer than abscesses in other locations of the brain. Brain abscess caused by streptococcus constellatus are very rarely been reported in the literature. We present a rare case of a left-sided thalamic abscess caused by streptococcus constellatus in a 25-year-old male patient wh

Brain abscess in pediatric patients carries significant morbidity and mortality risk, requiring prompt diagnosis and multidisciplinary management approach. We report the case of a previously healthy 15-year-old male presenting with complaints of fever, headache, and somnolence. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a brain abscess, leading to empiric treatment with ceftriaxone, vancomycin, and metronidazole, followed by urgent surgical drainage. Abscess culture yielded Streptococcus constellatus, and treatment was narrowed to ceftriaxone. This case emphasises the importance of early recognitio

IntroductionLudwig's angina is a rapidly progressive and life-threatening cellulitis of the soft tissue of the floor of the mouth and neck. Streptococcal and Staphylococcal infections are the most common causes, arising from poor dentition, oral procedures, alcoholism, diabetes or vascular disease, immunocompromised states such as malignancy, or malnutrition. Treatment involves securing the airway, broad spectrum antibiotic coverage, and surgical drainage for any abscess or drainable collection of fluid.CaseA 22-year-old transgender woman with a history of pre-diabetes, hypertension, asthma, h

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus constellatus, a commensal, plays an important role in purulent infections. It has been reported as aggressive pathogen causing pleural empyema. But the role of S. constellatus in empyema has not been taken seriously. There are no studies about clinical characteristics of empyema caused by S. constellatus domestically and abroad. This study aimed to explore the clinical features and management of empyema caused by S. constellatus.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 9 patients diagnosed with empyema caused by S. constellatus in a hospital between January 2010 and Augus

We report an extremely rare case of purulent pericarditis caused by the normally commensal oral flora, Streptococcus constellatus, a viridans Streptococcal species and member of the S. anginosus group (previously also known by the eponymous 'S. milleri', for American Willoughby Dayton Miller). This case is a previously healthy 71-year-old immunocompetent woman from Arizona who presented with a 5-day history of progressive shortness of breath and chest tightness, and subjective fever and chills, but without history of nausea, vomiting, night sweats, recent travel, autoimmune disease or sick con

Streptococcus constellatus (S. constellatus) is a Gram-positive commensal bacterium that is commonly found in the oral, nasal, pharyngeal, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts. It can be further consisted by three subspecies: subsp, constellatus, subsp. pharynges, and subsp. viborgensis. As an opportunistic pathogen, S. constellatus can cause abscesses and bacteremia, so infection requires timely and accurate identification in clinical practice. There are a few case reports describing the range of infections caused by S. constellatus, which include intracardiac, thoracic, intracranial, and

Streptococcus constellatus is usually a benign, commensal bacteria but has increased incidence in blood cultures and abscesses. This pathogenic involvement is most prevalent in individuals with underlying medical conditions, such as solid tumors and type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as in cases of community-acquired infections. We report a 43-year-old male with a right medial thigh ulcer and necrotic scrotal skin. The wound culture from surgical debridement grew Streptococcus constellatus, and histology was consistent with stage III necrotizing fasciitis. Regardless of etiology, the mortality
