Infectious Spondylitis Caused by Streptococcus gordonii.

Infectious spondylitis is a rare but severe disease of the spine caused by bacteria or other pathogens. Particularly in immunocompromised patients, a definitive source of infection often remains uncertain. Among many pathogens, Streptococcus gordonii, a normal oral flora, is a very rare pathogen in infectious spondylitis. Only a few articles have reported infectious spondylitis caused by Streptococcus gordonii. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of surgically treated infectious spondylitis caused by Streptococcus gordonii. Hence, in the current report, we present the case

Spondylodiskitis and endocarditis due to Streptococcus gordonii.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus gordonii is an infrequent cause of infective endocarditis (IE); associated spondylodiskitis has not yet been described in the literature. PURPOSE: We describe 2 patients who presented with new-onset, severe back pain; blood cultures revealed S. gordonii bacteremia, which led to the diagnosis of spondylodiskitis and IE. We review our 2-decade experience with S. gordonii bacteremia to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of these patients. RESULTS: In our hospital over the last 20 years (1998-2017), a total of 15 patients with S. gordonii bacterem

Host interactomes of Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus gordonii exposed to saliva or serum.

Oral streptococci colonize the oral cavity in multispecies communities. They adhere to the salivary pellicle through surface interactions, whereafter additional bacteria and fungi are recruited to form the stable community. The oral streptococci reside as commensals in the oral cavity and contribute to homeostasis, for example, through colonization resistance. However, accumulation of bacteria at the gingival margins can cause inflammation in the oral cavity, leading to increased interaction with inflammatory mediators and serum constituents from the blood. Furthermore, mechanical disruption o

Comparison of genes required for H2O2 resistance in Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is produced by several members of the genus Streptococcus mainly through the pyruvate oxidase SpxB under aerobic growth conditions. The acute toxic nature of H2O2 raises the interesting question of how streptococci cope with intrinsically produced H2O2, which subsequently accumulates in the microenvironment and threatens the closely surrounding population. Here, we investigate the H2O2 susceptibility of oral Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis and elucidate potential mechanisms of how they protect themselves from the deleterious effect of H2O2. Both orga

Enhanced biofilm formation of Streptococcus gordonii with lipoprotein deficiency.

Streptococcus gordonii is a commensal Gram-positive bacterium that acts as an opportunistic pathogen that can cause apical periodontitis, endocarditis, and pneumonia. Biofilm formation of bacteria is important for the initiation and progression of such diseases. Although lipoproteins play key roles in physiological functions, the role of lipoproteins of S. gordonii in its biofilm formation has not been clearly understood. In this study, we investigated the role of lipoproteins of S. gordonii in the bacterial biofilm formation using its lipoprotein-deficient strain (Δlgt). The S. gordonii Δlgt

Neutrophil Activation Decreases Ability to Kill Oral Streptococcus gordonii.

As first responders, neutrophils are a vital component of the host defense against oral pathogens, and their function is critical in preventing the progression of periodontal diseases. Streptococcus gordonii, a generally commensal oral bacterium, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases by operating as a pathobiont with Porphyromonas gingivalis in periodontitis, and as an independent pathogen in infective endocarditis. Although the pathogenicity of S. gordonii is variable, its role in modulating, as well as responding to, host neutrophils remain, poorly understood. This study focuse

Streptococcus gordonii empyema: A case report and literature review.

Empyema is often caused by Streptococcus anginous species, followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The organism Streptococcus gordonii belongs to the Streptococcus mitis group, which rarely causes empyema. We report the case of a 59-year-old man who presented with exertional dyspnea and chest pain on the right side. The image obtained showed effusion on the right side. Streptococcus gordonii was recovered from purulent pleural effusion culture. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery with decortication, pneumolysis and received antibiotics for 13 days. A total of seven cases w

Impact of Polymicrobial Infection on Fitness of Streptococcus gordonii In Vivo.

Pathogenic microbial ecosystems are often polymicrobial, and interbacterial interactions drive emergent properties of these communities. In the oral cavity, Streptococcus gordonii is a foundational species in the development of plaque biofilms, which can contribute to periodontal disease and, after gaining access to the bloodstream, target remote sites such as heart valves. Here, we used a transposon sequencing (Tn-Seq) library of S. gordonii to identify genes that influence fitness in a murine abscess model, both as a monoinfection and as a coinfection with an oral partner species, Porphyromo

A Rare Case of Prosthetic Joint Infection with Streptococcus gordonii.

BACKGROUND Chronic prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication following total joint arthroplasty, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. The criterion standard of treatment for chronic PJI is two-stage revision arthroplasty consisting of complete hardware removal, thorough irrigation and debridement, placement of an antibiotic spacer, prolonged intravenous antibiotics based on culture sensitivities, and revision total knee arthroplasty once the infection resolves. The most common organism implicated in chronic PJI is Staphylococcus aureus. CASE REPORT In this rep

Adherence of Streptococcus gordonii HG 222 in the presence of saliva.

The influence of the presence of saliva from different salivary glands on the adherence of Streptococcus gordonii strain HG 222 to saliva-coated polystyrene surfaces was tested. In the presence of undiluted parotid saliva or diluted whole, submandibular and sublingual saliva the adherence of HG 222 was enhanced by the formation of small aggregates on the attachment surface. In the presence of undiluted whole, submandibular and sublingual saliva large aggregates were formed and the adherence to saliva-coated polystyrene surfaces was inhibited. Adherence in the presence of whole saliva compared

Acute abdomen revealed Streptococcus gordonii infective endocarditis with systemic embolism.

Infective endocarditis can result in potentially fatal complications such as heart failure, systemic embolization, mycotic aneurysm and neurological complications. Staphylococci and streptococci are the most common causative agents of infective endocarditis, with Streptococcus gordonii being a rare cause. We present a case of infective endocarditis in a young patient who presented with an acute abdomen 2 months after being diagnosed with cerebrovascular accident. An abdominal computed tomography revealed superior mesenteric artery thrombosis, and infarct in the right kidney and spleen as a res

Macrophage Polarization Alters Postphagocytosis Survivability of the Commensal Streptococcus gordonii.

Oral streptococci are generally considered commensal organisms; however, they are becoming recognized as important associate pathogens during the development of periodontal disease as well as being associated with several systemic diseases, including as a causative agent of infective endocarditis. An important virulence determinant of these bacteria is an ability to evade destruction by phagocytic cells, yet how this subversion occurs is mostly unknown. Using Streptococcus gordonii as a model commensal oral streptococcus that is also associated with disease, we find that resistance to reactive

Streptococcus gordonii septic arthritis: two cases and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in antimicrobial and surgical therapy, septic arthritis remains a rheumatologic emergency that can lead to rapid joint destruction and irreversible loss of function. In adults, Staphylococcus aureus is the most common microorganism isolated from native joints. Streptococcus gordonii is a prominent member of the viridans group of oral bacteria and is among the bacteria most frequently identified as being primary agent of subacute bacterial endocarditis. To the best of our knowledge, Streptococcus gordonii has not yet been described as agent of septic arthritis. CAS

Secretion of Porphyromonas gingivalis fimbrillin polypeptides by recombinant Streptococcus gordonii.

The fimbriae of Porphyromonas gingivalis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. A structural subunit of the P. gingivalis fimbriae, fimbrillin, has been shown to promote adherence of the bacteria to host surfaces and also induce an immune response. Biologically active domains of fimbrillin responsible for adherence or eliciting immune responses have been determined. In a previous study, we engineered the human oral commensal organism Streptococcus gordonii to express such biologically active domains on the surface of the bacteria as a vaccine delivery system. The Influence of Streptococcus mutans Biofilm Formation in a Polymicrobial Environment (Streptococcus gordonii & Porphyromonas gingivalis).

OBJECTIVES: Biofilms play a vital role in the occurrence or worsening of an infectious disease. Streptococcus mutans is a bacterium with the ability to form biofilms that plays a key role in the development of infectious diseases such as dental caries. The formation of biofilms in S. mutans is mediated by quorum sensing. Inhibiting quorum sensing can be considered as one of the approaches to prevent caries. This study aims to investigate the ability of Streptococcus gordonii and Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria to inhibit the formation of S. mutans biofilm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This resear

Determination of 16S rRNA sequences of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus gordonii and phylogenetic relationships among members of the genus Streptococcus.

We determined the 16S rRNA sequences of the type strains of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus gordonii and calculated the phylogenetic distances between those organisms and other members of the genus Streptococcus. The viridans group streptococci were separated into five phylogenetic groups; we named these groups the anginosus group, the mitis group, the salivarius group, the bovis group, and the mutans group. S. mitis and S. gordonii clustered in the mitis group together with Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguis, and Streptococcus parasanguis at levels of

Uncovering Roles of Streptococcus gordonii SrtA-Processed Proteins in the Biofilm Lifestyle.

Streptococcus gordonii is a commensal oral organism. Harmless in the oral cavity, S. gordonii is an opportunistic pathogen. S. gordonii adheres to body surfaces using surface adhesive proteins (adhesins), which are critical to subsequent formation of biofilm communities. As in most Gram-positive bacteria, S. gordonii surface proteins containing the C-terminal LPXTG motif cleavage sequence are processed by sortase A (SrtA) to become covalently attached to the cell wall. To characterize the functional diversity and redundancy in the family of SrtA-processed proteins, an S. gordonii DL1 markerles

An In Vitro Model for Candida albicans⁻Streptococcus gordonii Biofilms on Titanium Surfaces.

The oral cavity serves as a nutrient-rich haven for over 600 species of microorganisms. Although many are essential to maintaining the oral microbiota, some can cause oral infections such as caries, periodontitis, mucositis, and endodontic infections, and this is further exacerbated with dental implants. Most of these infections are mixed species in nature and associated with a biofilm mode of growth. Here, after optimization of different parameters including cell density, growth media, and incubation conditions, we have developed an in vitro model of C. albicans⁻S. gordonii mixed-species biof
