While pregnancy is a time of relative immunosuppression, infective endocarditis and bacterial meningitis remain rare. We present a case of a pregnant woman with Streptococcus oralis endocarditis and meningitis. This is the first reported case of Streptococcus oralis meningitis in a patient without predisposing risk factors. This case highlights the importance of collecting blood cultures in febrile illness during pregnancy and illustrates that effective management plans can be formulated without performing invasive diagnostic tests such as transesophageal echocardiography.

The relation between the biochemical and serological properties of 'Streptococcus sanguis' was studied to characterize the strains isolated from dental plaque of patients with Behçet's disease and controls. Seven reference and 100 clinical strains preserved by the Behçet's Disease Research Committee of Japan were identified using established criteria and differentiated with antisera against Strep. oralis ATCC 10557, Strep. sanguis ATCC 10556 and 'Strep. sanguis' ST7, compatible with the criteria. Uncommon serovars (serotypes) KTH-1 (= ATCC 49298), KTH-2 (= ATCC 49296), KTH-3 (= ATCC KTH-4 (= A

Although the pathogenesis of Streptococcus oralis may be different from that of other viridans group streptococci, S. oralis shares a high degree of DNA sequence similarity with these streptococci. As a result, discrimination of S. oralis from its close relatives has long been considered difficult. This study was conducted to find specific genes that allow for the in vitro identification of S. oralis, but not other oral commensals. Four hundred ninety S. oralis clones obtained by suppressive subtractive hybridization were used for Southern hybridization, and positive clones were sequenced. Of

Streptococcus oralis, belonging to the viridans group streptococci (VGS), has been considered a component of the normal flora predominantly inhabiting the oral cavity. In recent years, a growing body of literature has revealed that dental procedures or daily tooth brushing activities can cause the spread of S. oralis from the oral cavity into various body sites leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections such as infective endocarditis (IE) and meningitis. However, very little is currently known about the pathogenicity of S. oralis. Thus, the aim of this review is to update the current

A 77-year-old man developed peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis caused by Streptococcus oralis, a rare pathogen causing the disease. The infection, which was not controlled by one-week intraperitoneal administration of cefazolin and ceftazidime, was cured only after switching to two-week intravenous administration of cefazolin and ceftazidime. The patient had no major dental disease or recent history of dental intervention. This case suggests that S. oralis might cause peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis with persistent systemic inflammation via an extra-oral infection route. The clini

Oral streptococci colonize the oral cavity in multispecies communities. They adhere to the salivary pellicle through surface interactions, whereafter additional bacteria and fungi are recruited to form the stable community. The oral streptococci reside as commensals in the oral cavity and contribute to homeostasis, for example, through colonization resistance. However, accumulation of bacteria at the gingival margins can cause inflammation in the oral cavity, leading to increased interaction with inflammatory mediators and serum constituents from the blood. Furthermore, mechanical disruption o

Biofilm includes many microorganisms that causes the periodontal diseases. The increased drugs resistance against the infectious diseases is a major issue owing to excessive using of a broad spectrum of antibiotics. Recently, metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are being administered to control the growth of different types of microorganisms. For instance, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are found to be successful to control and limit the bacterial pathogenicity in the oral cavity without any cytotoxic effects on the human body. Aim. In this paper, it was aimed to detect the antibacterial effect of Au NP

A newborn male infant was admitted to the neonatal unit with suspected early onset neonatal sepsis for monitoring and intravenous antibiotics. Despite his initial normal clinical and laboratory parameters, cerebrospinal fluid cultures done on day 4 of life confirmed Streptococcus oralis meningitis. His mother became unwell shortly after labour, and grew Streptococcus oralis in her blood cultures. Both were successfully treated with antibiotics and made a full recovery. Streptococcus oralis has been associated with meningitis in patients receiving spinal anaesthesia or following dental work, bu

The commensal species Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis are genetically diverse to a degree that challenges traditional definitions of species. This causes automatic identification based on DNA sequences or cellular extract profiles problematic. Based on an initial analysis of 266 genomes, we subjected a subset of 100 representative genomes to detailed phylogenetic, pairwise distance and gene pattern analyses. S. mitis and S. oralis constitute a continuum of clones that are genetically unique. To recognize most isolates as separate species is biologically and practically meaningless

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2000eng
In the present study, the potential involvement of Streptococcus oralis in the aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) was investigated using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Biopsies from 28 RAS patients were analysed, in addition to 20 oral lichen planus (OLP) and 13 normal biopsies that were used as controls. PCR was carried out using a primer pair that targets the D-alanine:D-alanine ligase gene and detects DNA from both S. oralis and the closely related species Streptococcus mitis. Discrimination between these two species was achieved by digestion of PCR products with the res

UNLABELLED: In a world facing the unprecedented threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, targeted approaches to control colonization and prevent disease caused by common pathobionts offer a promising solution. Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a leading cause of infections worldwide, affecting both children and adults despite available antimicrobials and vaccines. Colonization, which occurs in the form of a biofilm in the upper respiratory tract, is frequent and a prerequisite for disease and transmission. The use of live bacterial strains as biotherapeutics for infectious diseases is

Beta-lactam resistant clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae contain altered penicillin-binding protein (PBP) genes and occasionally an altered murM, presumably products of interspecies gene transfer. MurM and MurN are responsible for the synthesis of branched lipid II, substrate for the PBP catalyzed transpeptidation reaction. Here we used the high-level beta-lactam resistant S. oralis Uo5 as donor in transformation experiments with the sensitive laboratory strain S. pneumoniae R6 as recipient. Surprisingly, piperacillin-resistant transformants contained no alterations in PBP genes but

We reported a case of an 8-year-old boy who was presented to the emergency department with left-sided hemiparesis. Computed tomography showed hypodense areas in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery, indicating acute cerebral infarct. Diagnostic evaluation was performed to identify the etiology. On the eighteenth day of hospitalization, cerebrospinal fluid cultures yielded Streptococcus oralis. We hypothesized that the source of the oral pathogen was an abscess belonging to his upper left fourth tooth, which, by a transient bacteremia, had invaded the central nervous system, and sk

Streptococcus oralis, belonging to the viridans group streptococci (VGS), has been considered a member of normal flora mainly inhabiting the oral cavity. However, more recently, there has been growing recognition of its role as a causative agent in various life-threatening infectious diseases such as infective endocarditis (IE) and meningitis. Additionally, the differences in the prevalence, clinical features, and prognosis of opportunistic infections between S. oralis and other VGS species have been addressed. Particularly the predominance of S. oralis in IE has drawn critical attention. In p

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus oralis belongs to the Streptococcus mitis group and is part of the normal flora of the nasal and oropharynx (Koneman et al., The Gram-positive cocci part II: streptococci, enterococci and the 'Streptococcus-like' bacteria. Color atlas and textbook of diagnostic microbiology, 1997). Streptococcus oralis is implicated in meningitis in patients with decreased immune function or from surgical manipulation of the central nervous system. We report a unique case of meningitis by Streptococcus oralis in a 58-year-old patient with cerebral spinal fluid leak due to right spheno

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair using the MitraClip device is increasingly used for high surgical risk patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR). Previous guidelines for infective endocarditis prophylaxis prior to dental procedures focused on high-risk patients, but without explicit recommendation for MitraClip recipients. We believe this could be the first reported case to identify Streptococcus oralis as the causative organism.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 87-year-old male with severe MR treated with two MitraClip devices three months prior to index admission, prese

This report describes a challenging obstetric case in which septic emboli from Streptococcus oralis endocarditis subsequently led to central nervous system infection. There were delays in diagnosis as the patient presented with non-specific symptoms of fever, diarrhoea and vomiting, initially suspected to be due to viral gastroenteritis and later SARS-CoV-2 infection. Antibiotics were commenced once gram positive cocci were isolated from a blood culture. The patient made no significant improvement despite antimicrobial therapy and subsequently developed a worsening headache and delirium. This
