Streptococcus sanguis bacteremia and colorectal cancer.

Streptococcal bacteremia is an uncommon presentation for colorectal malignancy, yet most physicians are aware of the association between Streptococcus bovis infection and these malignancies. Many are unaware, however, that other streptococcal species are associated with colon and rectal cancers. In this case report and brief review, we highlight this association and discuss a case of Streptococcus sanguis bacteremia associated with an early invasive rectal cancer.

[Immunological analysis of Streptococcus sanguis antigens].

The exact cause of Behçet's disease is still unknown. Recently, advanced bacterial studies revealed that Behçet's disease was related to Streptococcus (S.) sanguis. However, the antigenicity of S. sanguis has not been fully studied. In this study, we clarified the antigenicity of S. sanguis. We made S. sanguis antigens: Mechanical Braun Extract (MBE) and Crude Cell Wall (CCW) from the whole cells, Membrane Fraction (MF) and Cytoplasmic Fraction (CF) from MBE, Cell Wall Fragment (CWF) and Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) from MBE. We found that the major antigenicity of S. sanguis was present in CF by u

Immunoelectron microscopic identification and localization of Streptococcus sanguis with peroxidase-labeled antibody: localization of Streptococcus sanguis in intact dental plaque.

Streptococcus sanguis has been localized ultrastructurally within intact dental plaque by means of an indirect technique which utilizes horseradish peroxidase-labeled antibody. The technique allows for complete diffusion of the reagents to all portions of the plaque specimens. Control procedures can be carried out on serial sections of plaque with a bacterial composition similar to that of the experimental specimen. The 30-mum-thick sections can be examined in the light microscope to localize areas specifically labeled with peroxidase prior to cutting ultra-thin sections for electron microscop

Streptococcus oralis previously identified as uncommon 'Streptococcus sanguis' in Behçet's disease.

The relation between the biochemical and serological properties of 'Streptococcus sanguis' was studied to characterize the strains isolated from dental plaque of patients with Behçet's disease and controls. Seven reference and 100 clinical strains preserved by the Behçet's Disease Research Committee of Japan were identified using established criteria and differentiated with antisera against Strep. oralis ATCC 10557, Strep. sanguis ATCC 10556 and 'Strep. sanguis' ST7, compatible with the criteria. Uncommon serovars (serotypes) KTH-1 (= ATCC 49298), KTH-2 (= ATCC 49296), KTH-3 (= ATCC KTH-4 (= A

Genetic transformation in Streptococcus sanguis. Effects on genetic transformation by culture filtrates of Streptococcus sanguis (serogroups H and W) and streptococcus mitis (mitior) with reference to identification.

Streptococcus sanguis (serogroups H and W) strains are frequently competent in genetic transformation. In a collection of 18 strains of S. sanguis isolated from blood cultures, 12 strains were spontaneously competent in transformation by streptomycin-resistant DNA, and three strains were induced to competence by the use of culture filtrates containing competence factor (CF). Culture filtrates from spontaneously competent S. sanguis strains only induced competence in transformation of strains of the same species. In addition to the three "constitutional" types of S. sanguis with regard to speci

Carcinoma of the colon presenting as Streptococcus sanguis bacteremia.

Bacteremia by streptococci that normally inhabit the gastrointestinal tract has been associated with colon carcinoma. Such association is best known for Streptococcus bovis, but has also been reported for other streptococci. In the present communication a patient is described who presented with Streptococcus sanguis bacteremia and was subsequently found to suffer from an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid. A possible association between bacteremia by commensal streptococci of both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract and colon carcinoma is discussed.

[Close association of Streptococcus sanguis and Behçet's disease].

The oral flora of patients with Behçet's disease was investigated and compared to that of controls. The proportion of Streptococcus (S.) sanguis in the flora of patients with this disease was always higher than that of healthy controls. It is noteworthy that serotypes of S. sanguis in the oral flora of patients were different from controls. Immune responses against S. sanguis were also examined in the patients. Antibody titers against S. sanguis were higher in patients than in controls. Furthermore, the patients showed significantly increased skin reactivity to S. sanguis. These results sugges

Role of granulocytes in experimental Streptococcus sanguis endocarditis.

We investigated the role of granulocytes during the induction and course of experimental Streptococcus sanguis endocarditis in rabbits by depleting blood granulocytes with nitrogen mustard. The induction of the endocarditis was not influenced by granulocytopenia: the 50% infectious dose was 5.4 X 10(4) colony-forming units in normal and granulocytopenic rabbits. However, granulocytopenia influenced the curse of the endocarditis, as shown by a significant increase in the number of colony-forming units per gram of vegetation (P less than 0.02) from 24 to 72 h after the injection of 10(5) colony-

Trypsin-susceptible cell surface characteristics of Streptococcus sanguis.

The adherence of Streptococcus sanguis to saliva-coated hydroxylapatite was markedly reduced by treatment of the cells with trypsin. In Scatchard plots of adherence data, protease-treated S. sanguis did not exhibit the characteristic positive slopes, suggesting that trypsin prevented cooperative interactions between the cells and artificial pellicle. Trypsin also reduced the tendency of S. sanguis to bind to hexadecane and to octyl-Sepharose. When sodium dodecyl sulfate was used to elute S. sanguis from columns of octyl-Sepharose, it was observed that the elution profiles of trypsin-treated ce

Characterization of salivary alpha-amylase binding to Streptococcus sanguis.

The purpose of this study was to identify the major salivary components which interact with oral bacteria and to determine the mechanism(s) responsible for their binding to the bacterial surface. Strains of Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, and Actinomyces viscosus were incubated for 2 h in freshly collected human submandibular-sublingual saliva (HSMSL) or parotid saliva (HPS), and bound salivary components were eluted with 2% sodium dodecyl sulfate. By sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western transfer, alpha-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) was

Characterization of Streptococcus sanguis isolated from patients with Behçet's disease.

The DNA homology and cell wall sugar constituents of eight Streptococcus sanguis(-like) strains, three isolated from the patients with Behçet's disease (BD114-23, BD113-20, BD118-1), two from patients with Kawasaki disease (MCLS-1, MCLS-2), and three type and reference strains of ATCC (ATCC10556T: S. sanguis, ATCC10557: S. oralis, and ATCC10558T: S. gordonii) were analyzed. Strains BD114-23 and BD118-1 showed high DNA homology to ATCC10556T, and their cell wall constituents were identical. Conversely, BD113-20, MCLS-1, MCLS-2, and ATCC10557 showed little DNA homology to ATCC10556T and ATCC1055

An 81-year-old male with iliopsoas abscess by Streptococcus sanguis.

Iliopsoas muscle abscess is an uncommon condition, which has been growing in incidence. We describe a primary iliopsoas abscess by Streptococcus sanguis affecting an 81-year-old man cured by antibiotic therapy and aspiration procedure. The objective is to enhance the suspicion index about the iliopsoas abscess that may be mistaken for other causes of acute abdomen. The important diagnostic role of abdominal imaging studies is also emphasised.

Native triple-valve endocarditis caused by penicillin-resistant Streptococcus sanguis.

BACKGROUND: A 26-year-old man with known but untreated ventricular septal defect was admitted to the emergency ward with abdominal pain, fever and weight loss. Transthoracic echocardiography showed multiple vegetations on the anterior mitral leaflet, a mobile vegetation on the surface of the aortic noncoronary cusp and another on the tricuspid valve. His blood cultures grew Streptococcus sanguis with a penicillin minimum inhibitory concentration of 3 microg/ml. INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, echocardiography, blood cultures, minimal inhibitory concentration detection. DIAGNOSIS: Multi

Genetic transformation in Streptococcus sanguis. Identification, surface spreading and competence of invasive strains of Streptococcus sanguis Lancefield groups H and W and other invasive viridans streptococci.

Of 46 viridans streptococci isolated from cases of probably true bacteremia, 26 strains or 56% could be grouped serologically in the Lancefield system. Eight strains (17%) were identified as serogroup H (characteristic of Streptococcus sanguis), ten strains (22%) as serogroup W (a new group antigen found in S. sanguis) and eight strains (17%) as serogroup K (related to S. mitis (mitior)). The high number of serogroupable viridans streptococci was specially due to the introduction of serogroup W and indicates the importance of this serogroup in cases of bacteremia. A set of six diagnostic tests

Amine and tin fluoride inhibition of Streptococcus sanguis adhesion under continuous flow.

This study evaluated the ability of topically applied amine fluoride (AmF) and AmF-tin fluoride to inhibit the adhesion of Streptococcus sanguis within a parallel plate flow cell system. One of three AmF compounds and two tin fluoride preparations significantly reduced the net bacterial adhesion to conditioned glass over a 1-h period. Tin(IV) fluoride inhibited S. sanguis adhesion to the greatest extent, and this was shown to be dependent on the formation of the conditioning film prior to agent application.

Evaluation of antimicrobial activity in vitro of ten root canal sealers on Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus mutans.

The antimicrobial activity of ten root canal sealers was studied on Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus mutans. One hundred plates of trypticase soy agar-sheep red blood cell (10%), each with four distinct 3 mm diameter wells, were divided into two groups of 50 by means of the Lawn technique; one group was inoculated with S. sanguis and the other with S. mutans. Four milligrams of each root canal sealer was placed in each of three wells in 10 plates (five plates of each inoculant); the fourth well was left empty as a control site. Plates were incubated at 37 degrees C and checked after 2,

Streptococcus sanguis-induced platelet clotting in rabbits and hemodynamic and cardiopulmonary consequences.

By mimicking hemostatic structural domains of collagen, Streptococcus sanguis (aggregation-positive phenotype; Agg+) induces platelets to aggregate in vitro. To test the hypothesis that aggregation occurs in vivo, S. sanguis (Agg+ or Agg- suspension) was infused intravenously into rabbits. The extent of hemodynamic and cardiopulmonary changes and the fate of circulating platelets were Agg+ strain dose dependent. Within 45 to 50 s of the start of infusion, 40 x 10(8) CFU of the Agg+ strain caused increased blood pressure. Thirty seconds after infusion, other changes occurred. Intermittent elect
