Acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder following traumatic amputation.

Traumatic amputations are important causes of acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. In this study, we aimed to find out the occurrence rate of symptoms of acute and post-traumatic stress disorder after traumatic amputations and according to this, to assess the psychiatric status of the patients in the postoperative period. Twenty-two patients with traumatic limb amputation who were treated in our institution were retrospectively evaluated. During the early post-traumatic period, the patients were observed to determine whether they needed any psychiatric supportive treatment

Acute stress disorder as a predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder in physical assault victims.

The authors' objective was to examine the ability of acute stress disorder (ASD) and other trauma-related factors in a group of physical assault victims in predicting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 6 months later. Subjects included 214 victims of violence who completed a questionnaire 1 to 2 weeks after the assault, with 128 participating in the follow-up. Measures included the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, the Trauma Symptom Checklist, and the Crisis Support Scale. Twenty-two percent met the full PTSD diagnosis and 22% a subclinical PTSD diagnosis. Previous lifetime shock due to a trau

The influence of traumatic brain injury on acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder following motor vehicle accidents.

This study compared the acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom profiles in motor vehicle accident survivors who sustained a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or no TBI. Consecutive adult patients who sustained a MTBI (n = 79) and no TBI (n = 92) were assessed for acute stress disorder within 1 month of their trauma and reassessed for PTSD (MTBI: n = 63; non-TBI; n = 72) 6-months post-trauma. Comparable rates of acute stress disorder and PTSD were reported in MTBI and non-TBI patients. Intrusive memories and fear and helplessness in response to the trauma were

Acute stress disorder after mild traumatic brain injury.

The debate continues over whether a posttraumatic response occurs in those who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of acute stress disorder (ASD) in the mild TBI population. Patients who sustained a mild TBI after a motor vehicle accident (N = 79) were assessed for the presence of ASD. ASD was diagnosed in 13.9% of patients, and 5.1% were diagnosed with subsyndromal ASD. Dissociative, reexperiencing, and avoidance symptoms were found to have moderate to high predictive power. This study highlights the significant number of patie

Acute and post-traumatic stress disorder after spontaneous abortion.

When a spontaneous abortion is followed by complicated bereavement, the primary care physician may not consider the diagnosis of acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. The major difference between these two conditions is that, in acute stress disorder, symptoms such as dissociation, reliving the trauma, avoiding stimuli associated with the trauma and increased arousal are present for at least two days but not longer than four weeks. When the symptoms persist beyond four weeks, the patient may have post-traumatic stress disorder. The symptoms of distress response after spontan

Childhood adversities and post-traumatic stress: predictive pathways through acute stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Trauma, a psychological phenomenon, can contribute to several mental health disorders such as acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding the impacts of childhood adversities on mental disorders is essential, since early trauma can profoundly shape an individual's reaction to subsequent trauma. AIMS: To study the association between childhood adversities and full-threshold and subthreshold PTSD onset, either directly or through the intermediary role of ASD. METHOD: Data were collected longitudinally from healthcare workers aged 18 years an

Early pharmacological interventions for prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals experiencing acute traumatic stress symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Acute traumatic stress symptoms may develop in people who have been exposed to a traumatic event. Although they are usually self-limiting in time, some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a severe and debilitating condition. Pharmacological interventions have been proposed for acute symptoms to act as an indicated prevention measure for PTSD development. As many individuals will spontaneously remit, these interventions should balance efficacy and tolerability. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and acceptability of early pharmacological interventions for preventi

Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or Acute Stress Disorder: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder (ASD) are mental health conditions that may emerge following a frightening or traumatic event in a person's life. We conducted a health technology assessment of internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) for adults with PTSD or ASD, which included an evaluation of effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, the budget impact of publicly funding iCBT for PTSD or ADS, and patient preferences and values. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of the clinical evidence. We assessed the risk of bia

Neurobiochemical biomarkers and other risk factors for post-traumatic acute stress disorder.

Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity around the world and many trauma patients could suffer from a series of cognitive and mental disorders including acute stress disorder (ASD). Yet, little research has been done to investigate the influencing factors and pathogenesis of post-traumatic ASD. Therefore, this study investigated main influencing factors and neurobiochemical biomarkers of ASD in trauma patients with a purpose of early clinical identification and intervention. The patients were followed up by general questionnaire and Acute Stress Disorder scale (ASDS). Using the di

Symptom differences in acute and chronic presentation of childhood post-traumatic stress disorder.

The authors report on 24 children diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) according to DSM-III criteria. Each child was designated as presenting with acute or chronic PTSD depending upon the duration of symptoms. Children with the acute form of PTSD presented with a relative increase in spontaneously acting as though the trauma were recurring upon real or symbolic exposure, difficulty falling asleep, hypervigilance, nightmares, exaggerated startle response, and generalized anxiety/agitation. Those presenting with the chronic form had relative increases in symptoms of detachment, r

Post-traumatic stress disorder risk and witnessing team members in acute psychological stress during combat.

BACKGROUND: Occupational groups operating in dangerous environments may witness the development of acute stress reaction (ASR) in team members. Witnessing ASR in team members may increase the risk of developing subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. AIMS: To describe ASR symptoms that individuals witness, assess the relationship between witnessing a team member exhibiting ASR symptoms and an individual's own PTSD symptoms, and describe common intervention responses by peers. METHOD: Cross-sectional, anonymous surveys were conducted with US soldiers who were previously dep

A non-randomized pilot trial of the use of prazosin in the prevention of transition from acute stress disorder to post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Following a traumatic event, 40-80% of the patients with acute stress disorder (ASD) will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 67% at 6 months. Alpha1-blockers are effective in treating some symptoms of PTSD but their usefulness in acute stress situations remains unclear. We hypothesized that reducing noradrenergic hyperactivity with an alpha1-blocker during the acute phase after a traumatic event could prevent the transition to PTSD in patients with ASD. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a 1-month course of alpha1-blocker (prazosin) to prevent the tra

Post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with unintentional acute poisoning and its influencing factors.

INTRODUCTION: The population of patients with unintentional acute poisoning is large, yet clinicians pay relatively little attention to the psychological state of this group. This study aimed to investigate the current status of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its main influencing factors in patients with unintentional acute poisoning and provide data support and a theoretical basis for the prevention of PTSD and reduction of its incidence in this population. METHODS: Convenience sampling was used to select 312 patients with unintentional acute poisoning who were admitted to a terti

Increased risk of acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a nation-wide cohort study in Taiwan.

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be particularly vulnerable to the impact of traumatic events, yet the association between ASD and the risk of developing acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains uncertain. This study aims to investigate this association, addressing the gap in large-scale evidence on the subject. METHODS: Conducted as a retrospective and matched cohort study, data was sourced from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan, spanning from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2015. Acute and chronic plasma metabolomic and liver transcriptomic stress effects in a mouse model with features of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Acute responses to intense stressors can give rise to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD diagnostic criteria include trauma exposure history and self-reported symptoms. Individuals who meet PTSD diagnostic criteria often meet criteria for additional psychiatric diagnoses. Biomarkers promise to contribute to reliable phenotypes of PTSD and comorbidities by linking biological system alterations to behavioral symptoms. Here we have analyzed unbiased plasma metabolomics and other stress effects in a mouse model with behavioral features of PTSD. In this model, C57BL/6 mice are repeatedly e

Antidepressants in the acute treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Currently, there are few pharmacotherapy options for clinicians treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and antidepressants are usually the medication of choice. This meta-analysis aimed to review the efficacy of antidepressants in the acute treatment of PTSD in adults while investigating the contribution of study design and placebo response to the findings of these studies. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials that compared antidepressants with placebo for acute treatment of PTSD were selected. Memory bias for faces that are perceived as hostile by crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder.

The present study tested, and found support for, the hypotheses that crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder have: (i) a general memory impairment for faces; and (ii) a memory bias for faces that they perceive as hostile, even when these faces are not arranged to show any hostile face expressions. It is suggested that crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder perform worse on recognition memory due to impaired concentration, and that they allocate their limited attentional resources to the detection of hostility in others in order to avoid being victimized again.
