Design and construction of a uniaxial cell stretcher.

In vitro mechanical cell stimulators are used for the study of the effect of mechanical stimulation on anchorage-dependent cells. We developed a new mechanical cell stimulator, which uses stepper motor technology and computer control to achieve a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. This device also uses high-performance plastic components that have been shown to be noncytotoxic, dimensionally stable, and resistant to chemical degradation from common culture laboratory chemicals. We show that treatment with glow discharge for 25 s at 20 mA is sufficient to modify the surface of the rubbe

Ride quality evaluation of an actively-controlled stretcher for an ambulance.

This study considers the subjective evaluation of ride quality during ambulance transportation using an actively-controlled stretcher (ACS). The ride quality of a conventional stretcher and an assistant driver's seat is also compared. Braking during ambulance transportation generates negative foot-to-head acceleration in patients and causes blood pressure to rise in the patient's head. The ACS absorbs the foot-to-head acceleration by changing the angle of the stretcher, thus reducing the blood pressure variation. However, the ride quality of the ACS should be investigated further because the m

Pig lenses in a lens stretcher: implications for presbyopia treatment.

PURPOSE: To investigate porcine lenses in a lens stretcher with regard to presbyopia corrective procedures. METHODS: A lens stretching device was designed, which allows to simultaneously determine all relevant geometrical and optical parameters at each stretch position. The setup was used to compare the optical and geometrical lens properties of young slaughter pigs (n = 5) with older sows (n = 7). RESULTS: The change of optical power with stretching is about five times larger for young porcine lenses than for sows. For young pigs, the gradient index profile of the crystalline lens significa

Optomechanical response of human and monkey lenses in a lens stretcher.

PURPOSE: To quantify the forces necessary to change the shape and optical power of human and monkey lenses. METHODS: Cynomolgus monkey (n = 48; age: 3.8-11 years), rhesus monkey (n = 35; age: 0.7-17 years) and human (n = 20, age 8-70 years) eyes obtained postmortem, including the lens, capsule, zonules, ciliary body, and sclera were mounted in an optomechanical lens-stretching system. Starting at zero load, the lenses were symmetrically stretched in a stepwise fashion in 0.25- or 0.5-mm steps. The load, lens diameter, inner ciliary body diameter, and lens power were measured at each step and

3D printed biaxial stretcher compatible with live fluorescence microscopy.

Mechanical characterization and tensile testing of biological samples is important when determining the material properties of a tissue; however, performing tensile testing and tissue stretching while monitoring cellular changes via fluorescence microscopy is often challenging. Additionally, commercially available cell/tissue stretchers are often expensive, hard to customize, and limited in their fluorescence imaging compatibility. We have developed a 3D printed Open source Biaxial Stretcher (OBS) to be a low-cost stage top mountable biaxial stretching system for use with live cell fluorescenc

Simulating the Mechanics of Lens Accommodation via a Manual Lens Stretcher.

The goal of this protocol is to mimic the biomechanics of physiological accommodation in a cost-efficient, practical manner. Accommodation is achieved through the contraction of the ciliary body and relaxation of zonule fibers, which results in the thickening of the lens necessary for near vision. Here, we present a novel, simple method in which accommodation is replicated by tensing the zonules connected to the lens capsule via a manual lens stretcher (MLS). This method monitors the radial stretching achieved by a lens when subjected to a consistent force and allows for a comparison of accomm

Role of the lens capsule on the mechanical accommodative response in a lens stretcher.

PURPOSE: To determine whether changes in elastic properties of the lens capsule ex vivo with age contribute to the forces necessary for accommodation. METHODS: Postmortem human (n = 22; age average: 41 +/- 17 years; range: 6-7) and cynomolgus monkey (n = 19; age average: 7.7 +/- 1.8 years, range: 4.2-10) tissues including the lens, capsule, zonules, ciliary body, and sclera were mounted in an optomechanical lens-stretching system. Starting at 0 load, the sclera was symmetrically stretched to 2 mm in 0.25-mm steps at a speed of 0.1 mm x s(-1). The load and lens diameter were measured at each s

Comparison of the behavior of natural and refilled porcine lenses in a robotic lens stretcher.

The mechanism by which the eye dynamically changes focal distance (accommodation), and the mechanism by which this ability is lost with age (presbyopia), are still contested. Due to inherent confounding factors in vivo, in vitro measurements have been undertaken using a robotic lens stretcher to examine these mechanisms as well as the efficacy of lens refilling - a proposed treatment for presbyopia. Dynamic forces, anterior and posterior curvatures, and lens thickness are all correlated for young natural and refilled porcine lenses. Comparisons are made to lenses refilled with a homogeneous po

Rescue of traumatized riders in world circuits: a comparison between skidboard vs scoop Exl65 and aluminium scoop stretchers.

We compared the following stretchers to identify the better and safer to immobilize a fallen rider on the track. The stretchers were: Northwall's Innovation Skidboard, Ferno's Scoop EXL65 and anonymous aluminium scoop stretcher. We performed tests on track with several repetitions on a 25 meters path including asphalt, curb, natural and synthetic grass, and gravel. The Dainese Company supplied a suit and a helmet with sensors equipped to receive data. Dainese engineers processed data too. We timed the performance made by teams of three operators, men and women in different roles. The Skidboard

A novel first aid stretcher for immobilization and transportation of spine injured patients.

Effective immobilization and transportation are vital to the life-saving acute medical care needed when treating critically injured people. However, the most common types of stretchers used today are wrought with problems that can lead to further medical complications, difficulty in employment and rescue, and ineffective transitions to hospital treatment. Here we report a novel first aid stretcher called the "emergency carpet", which solves these problems with a unique design for spine injured patients. Polyurethane composite material, obtained by a novel process of manually mixing isocyanate

Testing the Emergency Evacuation Hyperbaric Stretcher for Fit in Small Military and Civilian Helicopters.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy is essential for the treatment of diving injuries in the field, but typically requires larger recompression chambers with limited porta-bility. The Emergency evacuation hyperbaric stretcher (EEHS) offers a portable solution for prehospital HBO2, particularly in remote or austere environments. However, it's compatibility with smaller evacuation aircraft remains uncertain. METHODS: A commercially available EEHS (Hyperlite 1) was tested for fit and operational computability in both a U.S. Coast Guard Air-bus MH-65 "Dolphin" and an Airbus H145 helico

Dynamic multi-arm radial lens stretcher: a robotic analog of the ciliary body.

We developed a dynamic lens stretching device to quantitatively determine the relationships between force, equatorial displacement, and anterior curvature. A computer-controlled four-arm lens stretcher, equipped with real-time force transducers in each arm, was designed and constructed to obtain transient force measurements during lens stretching. The force-decay spectrum was fitted with a seven-parameter viscoelastic model characterized by three time constants. A corneal topography unit was used to measure the curvature of fresh porcine lenses ex vivo and in vitro in a four-arm lens stretcher

Immobilization Discomfort During Prolonged Emergency Stretcher Use: An Exploratory Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate pain assessment in trauma care is challenged by the coexistence of multiple forms of discomfort. Recognizing and differentiating these experiences is essential to improve assessment accuracy and guide appropriate early interventions. However, immobilization discomfort remains poorly defined. PURPOSE: Explore the experiences of healthy volunteers subjected to immobilization on an ambulance stretcher, and develop a preliminary conceptual definition of immobilization discomfort. DESIGN: Exploratory qualitative descriptive study. METHOD: This exploratory qualitative descrip

The CaT stretcher: An open-source system for delivering uniaxial strain to cells and tissues (CaT).

Integration of mechanical cues in conventional 2D or 3D cell culture platforms is an important consideration for in vivo and ex vivo models of lung health and disease. Available commercial and published custom-made devices are frequently limited in breadth of applications, scalability, and customization. Herein we present a technical report on an open-source, cell and tissue (CaT) stretcher, with modularity for different in vitro and ex vivo systems, that includes the following features: 1) Programmability for modeling different breathing patterns, 2) scalability to support low to high-through

Chest compressions performed by ED staff: a randomized cross-over simulation study on the floor and on a stretcher.

BACKGROUND: Multiple factors may contribute to the observed survival variability following in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). While in-hospital CPR is most often performed on patients lying on a bed or stretcher, CPR training uses primarily manikins placed on the floor. We analyzed the quality of external chest compressions (ECC) in simulated cardiac arrest scenarios occurring both on a stretcher and on the floor. METHODS: Prospective cross-over simulation study enrolling ED nurses and nurse's aides as part of an annual evaluation. Simulated CPR was performed in the 2 rescuer-mo
