Satellite DNA evolution in Tytonidae (Aves: Strigiformes): dynamic repeat landscapes despite conserved karyotypes.

The elevated chromosome numbers observed in Tytonidae relative to the putative ancestral avian karyotype suggest that lineage-specific chromosomal fissions may have played an important role in the evolutionary history of this family. Here, we provide the first cytogenetic characterization of the American barn owl (Tyto furcata) and performs a comparative repeatome analysis across members of the Tytonidae, including other two species, the Western barn owl (Tyto alba), and the Oriental bay owl (Phodilus badius). The karyotype of T. furcata showed a 2n = 92, closely resembling that previously des

Health of an ex situ population of raptors (Falconiformes and Strigiformes) in Mexico: diagnosis of internal parasites.

Successful programs for ex situ and in situ conservation and management of raptors require detailed knowledge about their pathogens. The purpose of this study was to identify the internal parasites of some captive raptors in Mexico, as well as to verify their impact in the health status of infected birds. Birds of prey were confiscated and kept in captivity at the Centro de Investigación y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (CIVS) in Los Reyes La Paz, Mexico State. For this, fecal and blood samples from 74 birds of prey (66 Falconiformes and eight Strigiformes) of 15 species, juveniles and adults

FIRST REPORT OF CLINOSTOMUM SPP. IN THREE SPECIES OF STRIGIFORMES (MEGASCOPS ASIO, STRIX VARIA, BUBO VIRGINIANUS).

Clinostomum spp. are digenetic trematodes commonly found in piscivorous birds. At the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital in Ithaca, NY, trematode (also known as fluke) infections were identified in six owls admitted to the hospital from 2020 to 2023 representing three species: an Eastern screech owl (Megascops asio) (n = 1), barred owls (Strix varia) (n = 3), and great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) (n = 2). All individuals were presented to the wildlife hospital following vehicular trauma except for the two great horned owls. Trematodes observed in the oral cavities of these birds during init

Intestinal and liver flukes of birds of prey (Accipitriformes, Falconiformes, Strigiformes) from Slovakia: uniform or diverse compound?

During 2012-2014 up to 286 birds of the orders Falconiformes (5 species), Accipitriformes (11 species), and Strigiformes (7 species) were examined for trematodes and this represents the first detailed study in Slovakia. A total of 12 trematode species belonging to the families Diplostomidae, Cyathocotylidae, Strigeidae, and Opisthorchiidae were identified. Rare infections were found in falcons where only two species (40 %) and three of 85 examined birds (3.5 %) were infected with a low range of two to four worms of generalists Strigea falconis or Plagiorchis elegans. Contrary to that, ten acci

Hard tick infestation of birds of prey (Aves: Accipitriformes, Strigiformes, Falconiformes) in the Western Palearctic: New data and literature review.

Tick infestation of songbirds has been extensively studied at global and regional scales but relevant data on birds of prey remain scarce and fragmentary. Raptors are of particular epidemiological relevance because their large size, wide-ranging movements and nesting habits may facilitate long-distance dispersal of ticks, and endophilic tick species (e.g. from prey animals) may even persist in their re-used nests. In this study, we aimed to compensate for the lack of comprehensive data in this context. First, more than 1800 birds of prey were examined at 61 sites in Central and South-Eastern E

Morphological and Genetic Characterization of the Poorly Known Species Subulura chinensis Schwartz, 1926 (Nematoda: Ascaridida) from Athene noctua (Scopoli) (Strigiformes: Strigidae).

INTRODUCTION: Subulura chinensis Schwartz, 1926 is a hitherto poorly known nematode species. The morphology of S. chinensis has not been sufficiently well described. In addition, the molecular data from species of the Subuluroidea are extremely limited. METHODS: The detailed morphology of S. chinensis was studied using light microscopy and, for the first time, scanning electron microscopy, based on newly collected specimens from the little owl Athene noctua (Scopoli) (Strigiformes: Strigidae) in China. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of ribosomal DNA and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxida

MOLECULAR SURVEY OF HAEMOSPORIDIAN PARASITES IN HAWKS, FALCONS, AND OWLS (ACCIPITRIFORMES, FALCONIFORMES, STRIGIFORMES) FROM MINNESOTA AND NORTH DAKOTA, WITH REMARKS ON THE PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS OF HAEMOSPORIDIANS IN NORTH AMERICAN RAPTORS.

Avian haemosporidians are a diverse group of apicomplexan parasites that are globally distributed and infect almost all avian orders. Haemosporidian surveys of raptors (birds of prey) are underrepresented compared to those of songbirds, perhaps because of the greater difficulty in capturing and handling raptors. In this study, we captured raptors over a 7-yr period from northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Using standard molecular methods, we successfully screened 595 individuals representing 5 species of hawks (Accipitriformes), 3 species of falcons (Falconiformes), and 7 spe

Emergence and establishment of Usutu virus infection in wild and captive avian species in and around Zurich, Switzerland--genomic and pathologic comparison to other central European outbreaks.

In late summer 2006 considerable mortality in wild and captive Passeriformes and Strigiformes was observed in Zurich, Switzerland. All animals were found in a range of 2 km(2). Observed clinical signs involved depression, ruffled plumage, incoordination, seizures and peracute death. Nutritional status was generally moderate to poor in wild birds, and variable in captive animals. Necropsy showed marked splenomegaly, a mild hepatomegaly, and pulmonary hyperemia in most animals. Histopathologic lesions were very discrete and consisted mainly of neuronal necrosis, leucocytolysis in and around the

Oral trichomonosis: Description and severity of lesions in birds in Spain.

Avian trichomonosis is a parasitic disease caused by the flagellated protozoan Trichomonas gallinae. Columbiformes are the reservoir host of the parasite, with high levels of infection, but also other domestic and wild birds from a variety of orders are susceptible to the infection and development of gross lesions. In this paper we describe the type and severity of lesions in wild birds in four avian orders (Accipitriformes, Falconiformes, Strigiformes and Columbiformes). A total of 94 clinical cases diagnosed of trichomonosis were selected for the categorization of their lesions in the upper

Molecular and Microscopic Identification of Sarcocystis spp. in the Intestines of the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) in Lithuania.

The role of birds of the Strigiformes order in the transmission of globally distributed Sarcocystis parasites remains insufficiently studied. In the present work we aimed to evaluate the diversity of Sarcocystis species in the intestines of 22 naturally infected Tawny Owls (Strix aluco) sampled in Lithuania. The Sarcocystis infection was established using combined light microscopy and DNA sequence analysis. Samples were analyzed using Sarcocystis-genus and species-specific primers in nested PCR followed by Sanger sequencing. Sporocysts of Sarcocystis spp. were detected in 45.5% of samples, whi

Ear asymmetry in Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus): Two phases of asymmetrical development of the squamoso-occipital wing.

Ear asymmetry is an adaptive characteristic present in the order of owls (Strigiformes). It developed independently up to seven times in this taxon and is accompanied by morphological adaptations in bones or soft tissues around or at the ear openings. Within all strigiform species, the Boreal or Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus) possesses a particularly complex bilateral ear asymmetry that results from modifications of the neurocranium and some cartilaginous elements. While the ear asymmetry in adult birds has been described in detail, data on its development is scarce. Here we describe the d

Implications of predator species richness in terms of zoonotic spillover transmission of filovirus diseases in Africa.

BACKGROUND: A rich biodiversity of predators has been suggested to suppress the risk of zoonotic spillover by regulating prey abundance and behavior. We evaluated the association between predator species richness and spillover events of Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus in Africa. METHODS: Historical records of filovirus outbreaks, along with ecological, geographical and socioeconomic factors, were considered in this environmental study. We used the maximum entropy approach (Maxent modeling) and stacked species distribution models to estimate predator species richness. Logistic regression analyses

Molecular detection and characterization of Trichomonas spp. in wild birds in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Members of the family Trichomonadidae, particularly Trichomonas gallinae, are globally distributed avian parasites that primarily infect birds from the orders Columbiformes, Falconiformes, and Strigiformes. Although infections in Passeriformes are often subclinical, clinical cases have been reported. Transmission occurs through direct contact or indirectly via contaminated food or water, enabling infection across various avian orders, including Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Passeriformes, Piciformes, Psittaciformes, and Strigiformes. This study aimed to assess the occur

Epidemiology and genetic diversity of Toxoplasma gondii in rescued raptors from wildlife rehabilitation centres in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Raptors, including the orders Accipitriformes (hawks and kites), Falconiformes (falcons and caracaras), Cathartiformes (New World vultures), and Strigiformes (owls), are found in small forest fragments, parks, vacant lots, outskirts, and open areas within the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. However, few studies have examined the infectious agents that infect them, particularly protozoa. This research reports on the seroprevalence, isolation, and genetic diversity of the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii in rescued raptors from two wildlife reh

Surgical removal of a thymoma in a burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia).

A 12-year-old male burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) was presented for evaluation of a mass in the right cervical region. A thymoma was diagnosed after surgical resection and histopathologic evaluation. Extensive adherence of the thymoma to the esophagus and suspected invasion into the right jugular vein contributed to a poor postsurgical outcome. Diagnosis and treatment of thymomas in avian species is similar to that in mammals. Surgical removal of noninvasive thymomas is usually curative. Thymomas are rarely reported in avian species and this is the first report in a strigiform bird.

Descriptive histological analysis of the upper, lower, and third eyelids and the conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue in birds of prey.

BACKGROUD: In this study, we present data obtained using light microscopy for the histological analysis of the upper eyelid (palpebra dorsalis), lower eyelid (palpebra ventralis), and third eyelid (palpebra tertia) also known as the nictitating membrane. We characterized the organized conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) in selected raptor species. The aim of this study is to compare the histological structures of these eyelids in owls and diurnal raptors to identify potential evolutionary links or independent adaptations to their environments. Toxoplasma gondii prevalence in carnivorous wild birds in the eastern United States.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important zoonotic protozoan parasite that can infect all warm-blooded animals including mammals and birds. Raptors can be intermediate hosts for T. gondii and the infection may be dependent on their feeding habits. In this study, we investigated the seroprevalence of T. gondii in ten raptor species from Florida, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee followed by a parasite bioassay on select seropositive samples. From a total of 155 raptors, we detected T. gondii antibodies using a modified agglutination test (cutoff 1:25) in 32 (20.6%) birds. The T. gondii seroprevalence was 44.

Development of ear asymmetry in the American barn owl (Tyto furcata pratincola).

Owls are known for their nocturnal hunting capability. Many owl species are able to localize prey in complete darkness just by hearing. Sound localization of strictly nocturnal owls is improved by asymmetrically arranged outer ears. According to Norberg (1977), who worked with adult owls, asymmetrical ears evolved at least four times independently among owls. What is unknown so far is how the ear asymmetry develops in the embryo. Here we examine the embryonic development of ear asymmetry in the American barn owl (Tyto furcata pratincola) in the frame of the 42 stages suggested by Köppl et al.
