A rare case report of Strychnos nux-vomica poisoning with bradycardia.

Strychnine poisoning is a rare method of deliberate self-harm in adults. Poisoning with strychnine leaves is a rare form of strychnine poisoning, as the usual plant parts used are nuts, bark, and seeds. Although the common cardiac manifestations of strychnine positioning include tachycardia and hypertension, we report a patient with mild strychnine poisoning with bradycardia.

Dimeric bisindole alkaloids from the stem bark of Strychnos nux-vomica L.

Strychnos nux-vomica L. (Loganiaceae) is famous for its monomeric alkaloid content, such as strychnine, a convulsant poison. The stem bark of the tree is traditionally used to treat intermittent fever in South East Asia. In various studies, it appeared that dimeric indolo-monoterpenic alkaloids possess a promising activity on Plasmodium falciparum. Three bisindolomonoterpenic alkaloids together with strychnochrysine, previously identified in the root bark of S. nux-vomica, were isolated from the stem bark. The structures of these compounds were established using NMR spectroscopy and mass spect

Monoterpene indole alkaloids from the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica L. with anti-rheumatoid arthritis activity.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder characterized by abnormal proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes and excessive secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Strychnos nux-vomica L. (S. nux-vomica) is a traditional medicinal herb used for treating arthritic disorders, while the material basis for its anti-RA activity remains poorly understood. In the present study, twenty-three monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs), including eight undescribed compounds (1-8) and fifteen known analogues (9-23), were isolated from the seeds of S. nux-vomica. All isolates w

Optimization of phenolics recovery from strychnos nux-vomica L. seed applying deep eutectic solvent-ultrasound assisted extraction.

Strychnos nux-vomica L. seeds (SNV) are a rich source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. In this study, the deep eutectic solvent-ultrasound assisted extraction (DES-UAE) is applied for the extraction of bioactive compounds from SNV seeds, which significantly enhances extraction efficiency, while reducing environmental impact. DES made up of ammonium acetate-propanoic acid (1:3) in combination with ethanol and UAE offered higher recovery rates of SNV bioactive. The extraction process was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) along with artificial

A reverse phased high-pressure liquid chromatographic method for the estimation of a poisonous matter in Strychnos nux-vomica.

Seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica were subjected to preliminary phytochemical tests and its presence was confirmed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) method. The TLC profile of the methanolic extract of seeds of S. nux-vomica was developed using the solvent system toluene:chloroform:methanol in the ratio 8:2:1. The plate was observed in visible light after spraying with Dragendorff's reagent (specific method). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) profile of the methanolic extracts of S. nux-vomica was developed, and the amount of strychnine seems to be 0.36% (w/w) in the seeds. The TLC an

Unreported Phenolic Glycoside from Strychnos nux-vomica Branches Attenuates Acute Liver Injury with the Participation of the Nrf2 Pathway.

Acute liver injury (ALI) has emerged as a significant public health challenge, driving the need for novel therapeutic strategies. While the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica L. are widely used in traditional clinics, the hepatoprotective potential of its pruning branches remains poorly explored. The crude branch extract relieved obvious hepatic injury, and bioactivity-guided chromatography isolated an undescribed phenolic glycoside from the raw plant material. This monomer boosted cellular antioxidant capability, regulated disrupted lipid metabolism, and adjusted ferroptosis-related changes with t

Quantitative LC-MS determination of strychnine in urine after ingestion of a Strychnos nux-vomica preparation and its consequences in doping control.

A simple, fast and sensitive method for the quantitative determination of strychnine residues in urine has been developed and validated. The method consists of a liquid-liquid extraction step with ethyl acetate at pH 9.2, followed by LC-MS/MS in positive atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-mode. The method is linear in the range of 1-100 ng/mL and allows for the determination of strychnine at sub-toxicological concentrations. The accuracy of the method ranged from 1.3% to 4.4%. The method was used to determine the excretion profile of strychnine after the ingestion of an over-the-c
