Reasons for Sports-Based Physical Activity Dropouts in University Students.

Despite extensive evidence reporting the numerous health benefits of physical activity, recent studies show that many people (60%) do not follow the recommendations to meet the accepted minimums of physical activity. Some of the main problems in today's society are the high dropout rates (35%) and low adherence to the conditions for achieving the physical activity recommendations. The aim of the study is to analyze the reasons for dropout from sports that the participants particularly liked, to design a new scale of reasons as to why they dropped out based on several previously existing scales

Emotional variables, dropout and academic performance in Spanish nursing students.

The dropout of university studies is a main concern in many countries, also for Health Sciences degrees. The reviews on dropout in all university degrees as well as nursing generally show multidimensional causes with factors related both to institutional and students' characteristics. Regarding the personal variables of students, researchers have focused on financial, family and personality features. Far less attention has been devoted to emotional variables. This study aims to explore whether individual variables of the emotional domain such as perceived emotional intelligence, dispositional

Correlates of burnout and dropout intentions in medical students: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a pervasive issue among medical students, exhibiting a high prevalence that jeopardizes their academic success and may also predispose them to more severe affective disorders such as depression. This study aims to explore the complex relationships between psychological capital (PsyCap), general social support, educational satisfaction, and burnout, and how these factors collectively influence dropout intentions. METHODS: A non-probabilistic convenience sample was collected through an online survey from first- and second-year medical students at a Faculty of Medicine in

Predicting dropout using student- and school-level factors: An ecological perspective.

High school dropout has been associated with negative outcomes, including increased rates of unemployment, incarceration, and mortality. Dropout rates vary significantly depending on individual and environmental factors. The purpose of our study was to use an ecological perspective to concurrently explore student- and school-level predictors associated with dropout for the purpose of better understanding how to prevent it. We used the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 dataset. Participants included 14,106 sophomores across 684 public and private schools. We identified variables of interest

Psychosocial Factors Explaining Academic Dropout among Scholarship Students at a Public University in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Student dropout in higher education is one of the most concerning issues on the agendas of countries, and it remains a challenge for the higher education system. This is reflected in cases where, despite the benefits and support provided by the state, students decide to give up their scholarships for various reasons. These reasons include economic, social, psychological, organizational, and interaction-related factors, as well as internal and external factors, all of which highlight the inefficiency of the higher education system. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of social

How can we strengthen students' social relations in order to reduce school dropout? An intervention development study within four Danish vocational schools.

BACKGROUND: This article describes the rationale and contents of an intervention program aimed at strengthening students' social relations in order to reduce dropout from vocational schools in Denmark. Taking its theoretical cue from the concept of 'social participation', a qualitative study was performed to investigate the specific relationships between the social environment within the schools and the institutional structures in order to analyse reasons for school dropout and their relation to well-being, cigarette smoking and substance use. METHODS: The development study was based on ethno

Medical school attrition-beyond the statistics a ten year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Medical school attrition is important--securing a place in medical school is difficult and a high attrition rate can affect the academic reputation of a medical school and staff morale. More important, however, are the personal consequences of dropout for the student. The aims of our study were to examine factors associated with attrition over a ten-year period (2001-2011) and to study the personal effects of dropout on individual students. METHODS: The study included quantitative analysis of completed cohorts and qualitative analysis of ten-year data. Data were collected from ind

High School Students With Reading Comprehension Difficulties: Results of a Randomized Control Trial of a Two-Year Reading Intervention.

A 2-year, randomized control trial with 9th to 10th grade students with significant reading problems was provided for 50 minutes a day in small groups. Comparison students were provided an elective class and treatment students the reading intervention. Students were identified as demonstrating reading difficulties through failure on their state accountability test and were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions and a business as usual (BAU) condition: reading without dropout prevention, reading with dropout prevention, dropout prevention without reading, or a BAU condition. Construction and validation of an instrument to assess the university dropout intention formation process UDIFP-29.

A significant body of research supports the importance of addressing university students' dropout intention, the process through which university students form the intention to dropout from their studies. However, available measurement tools failed to account for how dropout intention is formed over time. This research aimed to fill that gap by developing and validating a multidimensional self-report instrument to assess how the intention to dropout from the university is formed. Three studies were designed for this purpose. Study 1 used focus groups to explore how the intention to dropout eme

Factors contributing to the dropout of undergraduate nursing curricula according to the year of attendance: A mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage poses critical challenges for healthcare systems. Understanding nursing student dropout, particularly which factors contribute to this process and when they emerge during the curriculum, is crucial for developing timely and effective retention strategies that support workforce sustainability. Despite growing concern, no systematic reviews have examined the reasons for dropout through a time-sensitive approach. AIM: To understand the factors contributing to dropout from undergraduate nursing curricula with specific attention to the year of attendance. D

Validity and measurement invariance of the Screening Instrument for Students At-Risk of Dropping Out in health sciences students.

BACKGROUND: University dropout remains a major challenge in higher education, particularly in health sciences programs, where academic demands are high and retention is critical for workforce sustainability. Psychometrically sound instruments for assessing constructs associated with the dropout process remain limited, especially in Latin American contexts. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of a Screening Instrument for Students At-Risk of Dropping Out among health sciences students from public and private universities. METHODS: A cross-section

Selection of medical students: a controlled experiment.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to discover, through a controlled experiment, whether cognitive and non-cognitive assessment would select higher-achieving applicants to medical school than selection by lottery. METHODS: We carried out a prospective cohort study to compare 389 medical students who had been admitted by selection and 938 students who had been admitted by weighted lottery, between 2001 and 2004. Main outcome measures were dropout rates, study rate (credits per year) and mean grade per first examination attempt per year. Study rates in the 4 pre-clinical years of medical school were used to

Attachment and School Completion: Understanding Young People Who Have Dropped Out of High School and Important Factors in Their Re-Enrollment.

When students drop out of high school, this is often negative for their development as well as for society, as those who drop out have an increased risk of unemployment, health problems, and social problems. The aim of the present study was to synthesize knowledge regarding processes related to school dropout in general and school re-enrollment in particular. We performed a narrative review of the literature, focusing on Norwegian and Nordic studies, but we also included studies from other countries when relevant. We discussed the findings in relation to attachment theory and our own research

Influence of mental disorders on school dropout in Mexico.

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of mental disorders on failure in educational attainment in Mexico. METHODS: Diagnoses and age of onset for each of 16 DSM-IV disorders were assessed through retrospective self-reports with the Composite International Diagnostic Instrument (CIDI) during fieldwork in 2001-2002. Survival analysis was used to examine associations between early onset DSM-IV/CIDI disorders and subsequent school dropout or failure to reach educational milestones. RESULTS: More than one of two Mexicans did not complete secondary education. More than one-third of those who finished sec

Understanding dropout stabilization and the factors affecting the return to primary school: a qualitative study.

This study aimed to understand dropout stabilization and the factors affecting the return to primary school using a qualitative approach. Data were collected from 47 semi-structured interviews with dropouts, their parents, children who returned to school, social facilitators, school teachers, local community religious leaders, and education activists. Following Graneheim and Lundman's method, thematic data analysis revealed two main categories: "dropout stabilization facilitators" and "dropout stabilization inhibitors", with 10 subcategories. Dropout stabilization facilitators included the 7 s

Career perception as an upstream determinant of mental health and professional competencies in health professions education during systemic disruption.

BACKGROUND: Systemic disruptions, including public health emergencies, natural disasters, and large-scale interruptions to clinical training, can destabilize health professions education and reshape students' perceptions of their future careers. Career perception may function as a cognitive anchor that links disrupted learning environments with both psychological well-being and professional development, yet its structural role remains insufficiently understood. This study examined whether career perception operates as an upstream determinant of mental health, dropout intention, and professiona

Rehabilitation from airsickness in military pilots: long-term treatment effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Airsickness (AS) still represents a major issue in aviation medicine and affects many student pilots and aircrew members. This study aimed at producing an update of the Italian Air Force rehabilitation program for AS, including data on a prolonged follow-up (> 8 yr). METHODS: Data from 20 military pilots with a past history of rehabilitation for incapacitating AS were compared to those of 65 normal controls. All individuals from both samples were categorized as dropouts or successfully employed in fast jets, multiengine air carriers, or helicopters. All AS individuals were analyze

Parenting practices during middle adolescence and high school dropout.

INTRODUCTION: Despite inconclusive findings, educational researchers have long considered adequate parenting practices instrumental in preventing high school dropout among adolescents. The present short-term retrospective study focuses on parenting practices during middle adolescence when dropout typically occurs. METHODS: The culturally diverse, high-risk sample of Canadian adolescents (N = 108; Mage = 16.0 years) from low-income neighborhoods included very recent dropouts and matched still-in-school students. A global score reflecting the quality of parenting practices during the period pre

A systematic review of the relationship between high school dropout and substance use.

A systematic review of peer-reviewed, empirical literature published between 1990 and 2006 was undertaken to determine whether existing research could provide evidence, and a deeper understanding of the relationship between dropping out of high school and the use of substances such as tobacco, alcohol, cannabis/marijuana and other illicit drugs. Forty-six articles were reviewed. The review describes the heterogeneity of theoretical frameworks employed, as well as the limited ability of any one to adequately explain the relationship between high school dropout and substance use.
