Abortion and student health services expanding the conversation with student perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: College students are known to experience unintended pregnancy and seek abortions. However, few student health centers currently offer abortion services. In this exploratory study, we aimed to expand understanding of student perspectives regarding on-campus abortion services. STUDY DESIGN: We invited UC Davis students to complete an anonymous web-based survey using 16 campus listservs and in-person recruitment. We elicited student knowledge of and opinions about on-campus Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) with 29 questions. RESULTS: The 502 participating students primar

Use of service and treatment adequacy in health students with depression.

INTRODUCTION: Our study aimed to measure the prevalence of service use and adequate treatment in health students and to compare medical, dental and pharmacy specialties. METHODS: In 2021, we conducted a survey at Université Paris Cité for dental and pharmacy students. Data for medical students came from a national study conducted during the same period, using the same procedure. We used the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Short-Form (CIDI-SF) questionnaire to evaluate the presence of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in the last year. We asked the subjects if they had consulted hea

Medical student experiences in prison health services and social cognitive career choice: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: One of the purposes of undergraduate medical education is to assist students to consider their future career paths in medicine, alongside the needs of the societies in which they will serve. Amongst the most medically underserved groups of society are people in prison and those with a history of incarceration. In this study we examined the experiences of medical students undertaking General Practice placements in a prison health service. We used the theoretical framework of the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) to explore the potential of these placements to influence the caree

Student nurses' perceptions of clinical placements in Australian Prison Health Services: A mixed methods study.

Increasing demands for clinical placements have forced tertiary institutions to look for alternative placements for third year nursing students. While Prison Health Services provide an opportunity for nursing students to engage in care of offender populations with significant chronic illnesses, there has been little evaluation of such placements. Third year undergraduate nurses (18/46) participated in a mixed methods study to provide evidence-based research on students' perceptions of clinical placements in Prison Health Services. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected via an anonymo

[Student's use of illicit drugs: a survey in a preventive health service].

INTRODUCTION: The use of illicit drugs by students and the possible psychological repercussions in this population of young adults is an important public health issue. While some data in the literature suggest a relationship between cannabis and the occurrence of mental health disorders, and in particular psychotic illnesses, epidemiologic surveys have shown that cannabis is the most consumed illicit drug in France. AIM OF THE STUDY: To carry out a quantitative and qualitative epidemiological investigation of substance use within a student population seen during their mandatory preventive hea

Sexual Behaviors, Referral to Sexual Health Services, and Use of Sexual Health Services Among Transgender High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Transgender adolescents are at increased risk for negative sexual health outcomes compared to their cisgender peers. Taking care of our future doctors: a service evaluation of a medical student mental health service.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest medical students experience high levels of mental distress during training but are less likely, than other students, to access care due to stigma and concerns regarding career progression. In response, The School of Clinical Medicine, University of Cambridge supported the development of the 'Clinical Student Mental Health Service' to provide specialist input for this vulnerable group. This study evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of this service. METHODS: Using mixed-methods, cross-sectional analysis of validated psychiatric rating scales and qualitative fe

Medical Student Utilization of Mental Health Services: Mixed Method Analysis of Factors That Impact Where Students Seek Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Medical students are disproportionately affected by mental health conditions. It is therefore crucial to improve access to care for this population. To do this requires an understanding of where students seek treatment and what guides this decision. The goal of this study was to examine what motivates students to seek care based on a survey of medical students at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). METHODS: All medical students at MSUCOM were offered a survey that inquired about demographics; if they had sought mental health treatment, and if so,

Allied health workforce development for participant-led services: structures for student placements in the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

BACKGROUND: Health, disability, and community services are increasingly transitioning from government-led to participant-led funding models, which intend to increase choice and control for service users. Allied health practitioners, who provide many frontline services within the resultant marketised environment, must adjust their knowledge and skills to meet participants' expectations. However, future workforce strategies to address allied health student capabilities to provide these services have received limited attention. This study explored shifting understandings and practices related to

Mental Health Support Services in Universities: A Dyadic Exploration of Students' and Counsellors' Perspectives.

Background: Mental health issues among university students are a growing global concern, including in Malaysia. This exploratory study aims to examine mental health support systems in Malaysian universities using a dyadic perspective, capturing both students' and counsellors' experiences. This addresses a key gap in the literature, which has largely relied on single-perspective accounts. Methods: A qualitative exploratory design was employed using purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 students receiving mental health support and 10 university counsellors. The da
