Medical students teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation to middle school Brazilian students.

BACKGROUND: Diseases of the circulatory system are the most common cause of death in Brazil. Because the general population is often the first to identify problems related to the circulatory system, it is important that they are trained. However, training is challenging owing to the number of persons to be trained and the maintenance of training. OBJECTIVES: To assess the delivery of a medical-student led cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training program and to assess prior knowledge of CPR as well as immediate and delayed retention of CPR training among middle school students. METHODS: T

[The analysis of the bipolarity features in students of arts and the students of technology].

BACKGROUND: The aim of the research was to assess the prevalence of the bipolar spectrum features among students of a variety of faculties, by dividing them arbitrarily into 'art' or 'technology' cohorts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 120 subjects were examined, including 57 students of arts, and 63 students of technology. The tools used included a basic socio-demographic questionnaire and the Hirschfeld Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ). RESULTS: The bipolar spectrum features (as identified by the MDQ responses) were significantly more prevalent among the students of arts, as compared to the studen

Radiology Medical Student Education 2020: Surveys of the Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology and Medical Students.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in significant changes to medical student education by disrupting clinical rotations, licensing exams, and residency applications. To evaluate the pandemic's impact and required modifications of radiology medical student courses, the authors developed and administered surveys to Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology (AMSER) faculty and enrolled medical students. The surveys requested feedback and insight about respondents' experiences and innovations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anonymous twenty-qu

Implementation of a pilot medical student mentoring program for premedical students and its effects on premedical student attitudes.

As the medical school admissions process becomes increasingly competitive, there is an increased mental and emotional burden on undergraduate premedical students due to uncertainty about acceptance. Mentors in Medicine is a mentoring program between Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Texas Tech University students; the data demonstrate that this program can alleviate some negative emotional aspects faced by premedical students on their journey to medical school. The program interventions include establishing mentor-mentee relationships between medical students and premedical stud

[Brucellosis in a student].

We describe the case of a student with a history of two and a half months of fever, hepatosplenomegaly, cutaneous, hematological and bone manifestations, within an epidemiological background compatible with the diagnosis of Brucellosis. Diagnosis of Brucella abortus was confirmed by serology and positive blood cultures. Clinical manifestations of brucellosis and diagnostic and treatment strategies are reviewed.

Bioprinting Organs-Science or Fiction?-A Review From Students to Students.

Bioprinting technology has attracted significant attention in the field of tissue engineering, enabling the precise placement of cells, biomaterials, and biomolecules to construct 3D tissue and organ structures. This review explores the feasibility of bioprinting functional organs by assessing current advancements in the field. A poll conducted among people from diverse backgrounds reveals common optimism regarding the future of organ bioprinting and its role in medicine and other fields. The article is conceptualized from a student-to-student perspective to provide a brief overview of key asp

Abortion and student health services expanding the conversation with student perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: College students are known to experience unintended pregnancy and seek abortions. However, few student health centers currently offer abortion services. In this exploratory study, we aimed to expand understanding of student perspectives regarding on-campus abortion services. STUDY DESIGN: We invited UC Davis students to complete an anonymous web-based survey using 16 campus listservs and in-person recruitment. We elicited student knowledge of and opinions about on-campus Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) with 29 questions. RESULTS: The 502 participating students primar

Gambling behavior of student-athletes and a student cohort: what are the odds?

This study investigated the prevalence of gambling, gambling related NCAA violations, and disordered gambling in student-athletes (n = 736) with a comparison cohort of students (n = 1,071) at four universities. Student-athletes reported similar rates of gambling frequency, use of a bookmaker, and disordered gambling as students. After accounting for demographic differences, student-athletes were less likely to engage in sports wagering than students. Several risk factors for disordered gambling were identified, including being male and reporting at least one parent with a history of gambling p

Identification of medical student problems and comparison with those of other students.

The perceived problems of 585 medical students were compared with those of 1,110 students in the other health sciences colleges at the same institution. Through the use of a 5-point Likert scale, the students were able to indicate the degree to which each of 83 problem items on an inventory was of concern to them. The inventory included items concerning problems with life situation and school environment, other people, behavior, and feelings. The medical students were found to have the same spectrum of perceived problems as the other students but complained of these problems significantly more

First-year nursing students' accounts of reasons for student depression.

This study used content analysis and hermeneutics to examine 53 first-year nursing students' surmised reasons for their own or their peers' experiences of feeling down or depressed. Study data were confidential e-mail responses (n = 53) to the question, "If you or another student you know has been feeling down or depressed, can you describe a reason?" Content analysis reflected respondents' sense of their own relatedness to the experience; a general sense of awareness of the occurrence of feeling down or depressed among students; suggested reasons, from general to specific, for those experienc

Student abuse in medical school: a comparison of students' and faculty's perceptions.

A perceived abuse or mistreatment has been identified in the United States as a major source of stress for undergraduate medical students. The objective of this paper is to explore whether medical students in Israel have similar complaints, and if so, whether medical faculty members are aware of students' perceptions of mistreatment. Third and fifth year medical students of the 6 year undergraduate program of the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School were asked to respond to a self-administered questionnaire similar to those used in previous studies in the USA. An additional questionnaire

Comparing Peer-Taught Student Tutors to Faculty-Taught Student Tutors in Educating Medical Students on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, medical education has witnessed a shift in the integration of ultrasound into the preclinical years of medical school. Given the exponential increase in accessibility to ultrasound technology, students now have the opportunity to create peer learning groups in which ultrasound concepts can be taught from peer to peer, empowering students to work together to integrate ultrasound concepts early in their preclinical education. This project investigates the efficacy of peer-taught student tutors (PTSTs) in imparting the fundamentals of basic ultrasound techniques to
