Bridging Voices Through Food: Sub-Saharan African Young People's Perspectives of Food and Nutrition Policy in Victoria, Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Marginalised and non-white voices are under-represented in food and nutrition policy in Australia. To achieve equitable food systems that support healthy diets for all, the voices and lived experiences of people from diverse cultural backgrounds must be meaningfully included in decision-making. This research aimed to understand Sub-Saharan African (SSA) young people's experiences of food and nutrition and identify opportunities for culturally sensitive policies that can improve these experiences in Victoria, Australia. DESIGN: A qualitative approach, grounded in critical theory, e

Symptom Clusters in People Living with HIV Attending Five Palliative Care Facilities in Two Sub-Saharan African Countries: A Hierarchical Cluster Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Symptom research across conditions has historically focused on single symptoms, and the burden of multiple symptoms and their interactions has been relatively neglected especially in people living with HIV. Symptom cluster studies are required to set priorities in treatment planning, and to lessen the total symptom burden. This study aimed to identify and compare symptom clusters among people living with HIV attending five palliative care facilities in two sub-Saharan African countries. METHODS: Data from cross-sectional self-report of seven-day symptom prevalence on the 32-item M

Co-Designing a Digital Platform to Support a Culturally Adapted Family Intervention (CaFI:Digital) for Psychosis Among People of Sub-Saharan African and Caribbean Descent: Agile Co-Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: People of sub-Saharan African and Caribbean descent are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with psychotic disorders than other ethnic groups in the United Kingdom. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in the United Kingdom recommends family therapy as a clinically effective treatment for the management of psychosis. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence also recommends that family interventions should be culturally informed to meet the needs of an increasingly ethnically diverse population. People from minoritized backgrounds are rarely offer

Technology-facilitated gender-based violence against women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is extension of existing power dynamics and patriarchal systems that continue to oppress and marginalize women and girls. However, the mechanisms through which technology enables such violence and its effects on victims remain underexplored, particularly in the context of sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to examine how technology facilitates gender-based violence and to explore its impact on women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) met

Histopathological subtypes and topographical subsites of gastric cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Precision medicine in gastric cancer management involves accurate diagnosis, accurate staging, minimally invasive surgery for early disease, and targeted therapies or immunomodulation for advanced disease. The current approach to the management of gastric cancer relies on the tumor-node and metastasis (TNM) classification, which has been shown to have limitations. Molecular and genetic diagnoses are accurate and available, but expensive. The modified Laurén classification has been proposed and is based on the tumor location, tumor histology, and clinical course. This classification

Ovarian cancer presentation and management in sub-Saharan Africa: a scooping review protocal.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer is a leading gynecological malignancy mortality globally. Clinical outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are poor, largely due to late-stage presentation and limited accessing to effective treatment options. Referral pathways also delay diagnosis and compromise delivery of guideline-concordant care. A comprehensive mapping of evidence on ovarian cancer presentation and management across SSA is needed to characterize what is known, where evidence is concentrated, and where critical gaps persist. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol describes a systematic scoping revi

The RHCE*CeRN allele: molecular junction characterization and frequency distribution in Sub-Saharan African populations.

BACKGROUND: The CeRN (RHCE*02.10) allele was described as resulting from hybrid RHCE-D-CE genes, involving either exon 4 alone or exon 4 and part of exon 3. No solution allows to distinguish between the two reported CeRN alleles. The objectives of this study were to determine the existence of both alleles, their genetic sequence and their frequencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated 17 heterozygous CeRN samples and 10 homozygous CeRN samples, and described the junction between the RHCE and RHD genes. Analysis combined classical PCR associated with Sanger sequencing, and Oxford Nanopore

De novo rates of a Trypanosoma-resistant mutation in two human populations.

Mutation rates have long been measured as averages across many genomic positions. Recently, a method to measure the rates of individual mutations was applied to a narrow region in the human hemoglobin subunit beta (HBB) gene containing the site of the hemoglobin S (HbS) mutation as well as to a paralogous hemoglobin subunit delta (HBD) region, in sperm samples from sub-Saharan African and northern European donors [Melamed et al., Genome Res. 32, 488-498 (2022)]. The HbS mutation, which protects against malaria while causing sickle-cell anemia in homozygotes, originated de novo significantly mo

Dietary patterns among adults in sub-Saharan Africa are shaped by food groups and contextual influences: a systematic review.

Nutrition transition in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is accompanied by significant changes in dietary intakes. This systematic review reported data-driven dietary patterns (DPs) and their associations with health outcomes and sociodemographic factors among adults in SSA. Observational studies published between January 1990 and December 2024 were retrieved from Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed, Google Scholar, African Journals Online, Semantic Scholar, and African Index Medicus, between January 29 and 31, 2025. Non-English articles and studies exclusively including diet-modified adults were excluded.

Malaria in their words: thematic analysis of online narratives from Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: While the public health impacts of malaria in endemic regions of Africa are well documented, the profound personal and socioeconomic impacts remain insufficiently explored in broader discourse. Qualitative studies of lived experiences can illuminate these dimensions, humanizing malaria’s toll and informing more contextually grounded social and behavioral change interventions. METHODS: We explored malaria-related narratives from GiveDirectly’s online repository of recipient stories, drawing on a phenomenological lens and rapid ethnographic assessment. The study included 160 narrativ

Creative and Adaptive Solutions for Early Diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Many of the children with sickle cell disease born in sub-Saharan Africa remain undiagnosed and untreated. Increasing capacity and infrastructure to support diagnostic and screening programs in high income countries have enabled near universal survival into adulthood. Early diagnosis and treatment are achievable goals that enjoy widespread consensus in sub-Saharan Africa but may require a variety of individualized approaches that are specific to each country. A clear understanding of the issues that influence program building is required before identifying solutions adapted to the diverse heal

Family-Centred Care for Children and Adolescents Living With HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continue to face significant barriers to diagnosis, treatment adherence, retention in care and psychosocial support, despite progress in prevention and treatment coverage. Family-centred care (FCC) has emerged as a promising model that positions families-not just individual children-as the central unit of care, with potential to improve clinical and psychosocial outcomes while addressing persistent gaps in health system responsiveness. METHODS: Our scoping review synthesized evidence on FCC implementation strat

Safeguarding the future: The urgent need to sustain HIV services for children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa in the wake of foreign aid cuts.

Amidst severe aid cuts, sustaining paediatric HIV care in Africa is urgent. Children and adolescents face disproportionate risks from treatment disruptions. A youth-centred, multisectoral approach-integrating mental health, long-acting therapies, and community-based support-is essential to prevent catastrophic setbacks and protect vulnerable populations from rising infections, neurocognitive decline, and systemic exclusion.
