Subliminal Fas stimulation increases the hepatotoxicity of acetaminophen and bromobenzene in mice.

The hepatotoxicity of several drugs is increased by mild viral infections. During such infections, death receptor ligands are expressed at low levels, and most parenchymal cells survive. We tested the hypothesis that subliminal death receptor stimulation may aggravate the hepatotoxicity of drugs, which are transformed by cytochrome P-450 cytochrome P-450 into glutathione-depleting reactive metabolites. Twenty-four-hour-fasted mice were pretreated with a subtoxic dose of the agonistic Jo2 anti-Fas antibody (1 microg per mouse) 3 hours before acetaminophen (500 mg/kg) or 1 hour before bromobenze

Characteristics of dorsal horn neurons expressing subliminal responses to sural nerve stimulation.

The present study was designed (1) to characterize the subliminal responses of dorsal horn neurons to stimulation of the sural nerve, and (2) to correlate the type of response to this stimulus with the responses to natural mechanical stimulation of the skin. To accomplish this, intracellular and extracellular recordings were carried out in L6 and L7 dorsal horn neurons in the cat. The excitatory responses of each cell to electrical stimulation of the sural nerve and to mechanical stimulation of the skin were noted. Of 35 dorsal horn cells recorded intracellularly, 11 responded with impulses to

Functional correlates of subliminal stimulation in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Patients with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exposed to traumatic reminders show hyperreactivity in brain areas (e.g., amygdala) belonging or related to the Innate Alarm System (IAS), allowing the rapid processing of salient stimuli. Evidence that IAS is activated by subliminal trauma-reminders could shed a new light on the factors precipitating and perpetuating PTSD symptomatology. Thus, we systematically reviewed studies investigating neuroimaging correlates of subliminal stimulation in PTSD. Twenty-three studies were selected from the MEDLINE and Scopus® databases for a qualitative s

Reinforcement of subliminal flexion reflexes by transcranial magnetic stimulation of motor cortex in subjects with spinal cord injury.

A 20 msec train (500 Hz; 0.1-0.2 msec duration) of percutaneous electrical stimulation (ES) applied to the plantar surface was used to condition muscle responses evoked in tibialis anterior (TA) by transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex in 8 subjects with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). The intensity of conditioning ES was adjusted to just subthreshold for evoking flexion reflexes in TA and was delivered at conditioning-test (C-T) intervals of 15-60 msec prior to cortical stimulation. Four subjects with clinically complete SCI revealed no muscle response to cortical stimulat

Innervation of pelvic viscera in the rat. Evoked potentials in nerves to bladder and penis (clitoris).

In 29 rats, responses evoked by pelvic and hypogastric nerve stimulation were recorded from postganglionic nerves to bladder and penis (clitoris). Responses to pelvic nerve stimulation had nonsynapsing and synapsing components. The nonsynapsing component was relatively large in main nerve to penis and small in lateral nerve to penis and nerves to bladder. Pelvic nerve fiber synapsing on pelvic ganglion neurons to bladder had a large subliminal fringe, while fibers synapsing on neurons supplying penis (clitoris) had a small subliminal fringe. Recruitment was greater in nerves to bladder and lat

Systematic Review of Studies on Subliminal Exposure to Phobic Stimuli: Integrating Therapeutic Models for Specific Phobias.

We systematically review 26 papers investigating subjective, behavioral, and psychophysiological correlates of subliminal exposure to phobic stimuli in phobic patients. Stimulations were found to elicit: (1) cardiac defense responses, (2) specific brain activations of both subcortical (e.g., amygdala) and cortical structures, (3) skin conductance reactions, only when stimuli lasted >20 ms and were administered with intertrial interval >20 s. While not inducing the distress caused by current (supraliminal) exposure therapies, exposure to subliminal phobic stimuli still results in successful ext

Obesity, subliminal perception and inhibition: Neuromodulation of the prefrontal cortex.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a central role in food choice, and may be partly dysfunctional in obesity - a condition linked to altered attention and inhibition processes, particularly in response to food-related stimuli. We investigated the role of the PFC in subliminal visual processing and response inhibition to food pictures using anodal, cathodal, or sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in a sample of 53 normal weight, overweight, or obese participants. Subliminal processing was measured with a breaking continuous flash suppression task (bCFS), and inhibition with a Go/

The functional organization of the parasympathetic secretory innervation of the submandibular gland.

1. In cats the hypoglossal and chorda-lingual nerves were cut and their central ends sewn to the peripheral end of the latter nerve. At monthly intervals the sensitivity of the submandibular gland to a secretory agent was then estimated.2 When the supersensitivity resulting from the decentralization of the gland had been lowered to a constant level acute experiments were made. Electrical stimulation of both nerves caused secretion, which was abolished by ganglion blocking drugs and atropine.3. Simultaneous stimulation of the nerves at frequencies subliminal for each nerve did not cause any sec

Reliability of a TMS-derived threshold matrix of corticomotor function.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies typically focus on suprathreshold motor evoked potentials (MEPs), overlooking small MEPs representing subthreshold corticomotor pathway activation. Assessing subthreshold excitability could provide insights into corticomotor pathway integrity and function, particularly in neurological conditions like stroke. The aim of the study was to examine the test-retest reliability of metrics derived from a novel compositional analysis of MEP data from older adults. The study also compared the composition between the dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) sides

Unconscious integration: Current evidence for integrative processing under subliminal conditions.

Integrative processing is traditionally believed to be dependent on consciousness. While earlier studies within the last decade reported many types of integration under subliminal conditions (i.e. without perceptual awareness), these findings are widely challenged recently. This review evaluates the current evidence for 10 types of subliminal integration that are widely studied: arithmetic processing, object-context integration, multi-word processing, same-different processing, multisensory integration and 5 different types of associative learning. Potential methodological issues concerning aw

HD-tDCS of primary and higher-order motor cortex affects action word processing.

The contribution of action-perception systems of the brain to lexical semantics remains controversial. Here, we used high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) in healthy adults to examine the role of primary (left hand motor area; HMA) and higher-order (left anterior inferior parietal lobe; aIPL) action areas in action-related word processing (action verbs and manipulable nouns) compared to non-action-related control words (non-action verbs and non-manipulable nouns). We investigated stimulation-related effects at three levels of semantic processing: subliminal, implici

Subliminal and supraliminal processing of reward-related stimuli in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have highlighted the role of the brain reward and cognitive control systems in the etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN). In an attempt to disentangle the relative contribution of these systems to the disorder, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate hemodynamic responses to reward-related stimuli presented both subliminally and supraliminally in acutely underweight AN patients and age-matched healthy controls (HC). METHODS: fMRI data were collected from a total of 35 AN patients and 35 HC, while they passively viewed subliminally and supra

Characterization of the cerebral cortical representation of heartburn in GERD patients.

Although symptoms arising from the esophagus such as heartburn and pain can at times become challenging clinical problems, esophageal viscerosensation, especially with regard to chemical stimulation in humans, is incompletely understood. Our aims were 1) to characterize and ascertain the reproducibility of cerebral cortical registration of heartburn and 2) to elucidate the differences between these findings and those of esophageal subliminal acid stimulation in asymptomatic controls. We studied 11 gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients (9 males, 30-55 yr) and 15 healthy controls (8 ma

Unconscious processing of subliminal stimuli in panic disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Attentional biases to threat exist in panic disorder (PD), probably related to altered subliminal processing. We systematically reviewed studies investigating subliminal processing in PD. Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE and Scopus®. We meta-analytically compared PD (n = 167) and healthy controls (HC, n = 165) for processing of masked panic-related and neutral words. We also compared subliminal and supraliminal presentations of panic-related words relative to neutral words within PD subjects and HC. We found a significantly enhanced Stroop interference to masked panic-related words in PD vs

The origin of tic douloureux: a unified view.

An hypothesis on the mechanism of pain attacks in trigeminal neuralgia is presented. It is based on the analysis of clinical characteristics and pathology of a series of 278 cases submitted to different methods of treatment, and on physiological data of the literature. The hypothesis is that trigeminal neuralgia is a sort of sensory reflex epilepsy. The posterior root, damaged and distorted by a vessel or compressed by other lesions shows demyelination, micro-neuromas, and so on. At the site of this chronic damage ectopic impulses and afterdischarges are generated; the gasserian ganglion cells

Temporally dependent changes in response properties of dorsal horn neurons after dorsolateral funiculus lesions.

Previous studies in this laboratory have shown 1) that 19% of L6 and L7 dorsal horn cells in normal cats respond only with excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) to sural nerve stimulation, and 2) that the distribution of dorsal horn neurons responding with impulses to sural nerve stimulation is increased in cats with chronic lateral funiculus lesions. The present study was undertaken to determine whether strengthening of subliminal sural nerve projections could account for the changes seen after lateral funiculus lesions and to explore the nature of these changes in greater detail. Impairment of unconscious emotional processing after unilateral medial temporal structure resection.

The role of the amygdala in unconscious emotional processing remains a topic of debate. Past lesion studies have indicated that amygdala damage leads to impaired electrodermal activity in response to subliminally presented emotional stimuli. However, electrodermal activity can reflect both emotional and nonemotional processes. To provide behavioral evidence highlighting the critical role of the amygdala in unconscious emotional processing, we examined patients (n = 16) who had undergone unilateral resection of medial temporal lobe structures, including the amygdala. We utilized the subliminal

Anxiety responses to subliminal experience of mild stress.

Two groups of undergraduates (n = 14 in each) matched for level of trait anxiety participated in the experiment. One group (E) was presented with 20 'emotional' words 10 per cent below detection threshold while the other group (N) was presented with 20 emotionally neutral words under the same conditions. Ratings of seven psychological variables were taken before and after stimulation and two psychophysiological measures, heart and respiration rate, were also taken. MANOVA and subsequent ANOVA analyses showed ratings of sweating and anxiety increased in the E group and decreased in the N group

Pain, dissociation and subliminal self-representations.

According to recent evidence, neurophysiological processes coupled to pain are closely related to the mechanisms of consciousness. This evidence is in accordance with findings that changes in states of consciousness during hypnosis or traumatic dissociation strongly affect conscious perception and experience of pain, and markedly influence brain functions. Past research indicates that painful experience may induce dissociated state and information about the experience may be stored or processed unconsciously. Reported findings suggest common neurophysiological mechanisms of pain and dissociati
