Malignant sublingual gland neoplasms are rare, early-stage neoplasms presenting as painless non-ulcerated masses in the antero-lateral floor of the mouth. The majority of patients present with advanced disease, with symptoms of pain or anaesthesia of the tongue. Malignant minor salivary gland neoplasms are more common, the majority (>80%) of which present in the oral cavity, most frequently in the palatal area, as painless masses or as obstructive symptoms in the head and neck region. The most frequent pathologies are adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (>85%), with the major

Although mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are considered as the second most common malignant salivary gland neoplasm, only 0.5-1% of epithelial salivary gland tumours have been reported to arise from the sublingual salivary gland.1 The authors report a case of a low-grade MEC of the sublingual salivary gland in a 35-year-old woman. Wide excision of the tumour along with continuous marginal mandibulectomy was performed. There has been no recurrence till date.

Salivary gland tumors constitute about 3% to 4% of all head and neck neoplasms. Approximately 80% originate in the parotid gland, and they rarely present in the sublingual gland; however, a disproportionately large majority of sublingual gland tumors are malignant. Basal cell adenoma is a benign epithelial salivary gland tumor that appears to have unique histologic characteristics, different from those of mixed tumors, and has a predilection for development in the parotid and minor salivary glands. No case has ever been reported as arising from the sublingual gland in the otolaryngology litera

Neoplasms of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands are much less numerous than those of the parotid gland, but they are more often malignant: nearly 50% for the submandibular and 80% for the sublingual glands. A submandibular gland origin also imparts to a given carcinoma a higher degree of biologic malignancy than is expressed by similar tumors in the parotid gland.

In a series of 2,871 epithelial salivary gland neoplasms managed in the Peking University School of Stomatology between 1974 and 1999, 86 arose in children <16 years of age (52 parotid, 12 submandibular gland, 2 sublingual gland, and 20 minor salivary gland). Considerable delay was encountered in diagnosis (benign 24 months and malignant 16 months). In this group of children, 46 tumours (53%) proved to be malignant, with an incidence in the parotid, submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands of 31/52 (60%), 2/12, 0/2, and 13/20 (65%), respectively. Sixty-six of 86 neoplasms (77%) occ

Except for neoplasms, in symptomatic patients with submandibular swellings, gaps of the mylohyoid muscle may be the cause of herniations of sublingual tissues, such as fat and/or the sublingual gland. In two patients with a submandibular swelling, MRI with standard sequences including contrast enhancement was performed to exclude a neoplastic lesion. In addition, we performed a trueFISP sequence during modified Valsalva's maneuver. In both patients, a neoplasm was excluded. Instead, the trueFISP sequence during the modified Valsalva's maneuver showed submandibular herniation of sublingual tiss

INTRODUCTION: Sublingual salivary gland neoplasms are extremely rare, accounting for only 0.3-1% of all epithelial salivary gland tumors. Most of the sublingual tumors are malignant, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) being the most common histological types. The coexistence of two salivary gland tumors located in different major salivary glands is uncommon.
CASE REPORT: A rare case of two simultaneous tumors of the major salivary glands, one in the sublingual and the other in the contralateral parotid gland in a female patient is reported.
DISCUSSION: The diag

The frequency distribution of salivary gland neoplasms (SGNs) is, in decreasing order, parotid neoplasms, submandibular gland neoplasms, minor SGNs, and sublingual gland neoplasms. The larger the salivary gland (e.g. parotid), the more likely a neoplasm is benign, and the smaller the gland (e.g. minor salivary gland), the more likely the neoplasm is malignant. The majority of SGNs, benign and/or malignant, irrespective of site, present as a painless swelling or mass. Definitive symptoms and signs of salivary gland malignancy are the presence of named nerve palsy in anatomical proximity to the

Primary neoplasms of the sublingual glands are very rare. We describe our experience in managing a case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the sublingual gland, including differential diagnoses and therapy. Radical resection of the primary tumor was performed with bilateral supraomohyoid neck dissections. This was followed by postoperative radiotherapy that included the field of the draining lymph nodes (total dose 56 Gy). During a 3-year follow up period the patient was still tumor-free. We suggest--in concurrence with the literature--the use of this combined therapy in cases of malignant

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common tumor of the benign salivary gland neoplasms, and the most common gland to be involved is the parotid gland. Its occurrence in the submandibular or the sublingual gland is uncommon. We present a case of a histologically proven PA involving the submandiblular gland.

Primary adenocarcinoma arising in the sublingual gland is extremely rara, accounting for six cases reported in extensive survey of the literature for the period of 1930 to 1981. A case of adenocarcinoma of the sublingual gland is documented, demonstrating a highly malignant nature of the disease. This neoplasm possesses particular therapeutic problems owing to the relative lack of symptoms and the delay of initial medical observation after the onset of symptoms.

The major salivary glands consist of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Most neoplasms in other subsites in the head and neck are squamous cell carcinoma, but tumors of the salivary glands may be benign or malignant. Surgical treatment differs if the lesion is benign, and therefore preoperative fine needle aspiration is important in salivary neoplasms. The role of imaging is to attempt to determine histology, predict likelihood of a lesion being malignant, and report an imaging stage. This article reviews the various histologies, imaging features, and staging of major salivary

Cystadenocarcinoma (papillary cystadenocarcinoma) of the salivary gland is a rare malignant neoplasm. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. As far as we know, only one report, written in the French language, has been published concerning cystadenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland, but no report is available in the English language. In this report, we describe a case of cystadenocarcinoma arising from the submandibular gland of a 54-year-old male patient. The neop

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma represents only 0.4% of salivary gland neoplasms. Generally affecting the parotid gland, it has been reported only twice in the sublingual gland. Controversies concerning the treatment of lymphoepithelial carcinoma exist. Although the literature generally agrees that primary surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy is part of the treatment, the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy is not well described. This report describes the case of a 55-year-old man diagnosed with lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the sublingual gland. The patient was admitted for progressive pain in the floo

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm characterized by cysts and papillary endophytic projections. It was first defined in 1991 by World Health organization as a separate entity. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. We present a case of papillary cystadenocarinoma arising from the submandibular gland in a 67-year-old male patient. Further, we have discussed the cytological and histopathological features of this rare entity and reviewe

CT and MRI have greatly facilitated evaluation of pathology of the three pairs of major salivary glands and the hundreds of minor salivary glands. Imaging can frequently offer a specific histological diagnosis for benign and malignant neoplasms of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Obstruction, infection, autoimmune processes, and congenital anomalies also are readily diagnosed. CT and MRI studies assess the anatomic extent of minor salivary gland neoplasms. Sialography continues to provide useful information about intrinsic abnormalities of the parotid and submandibular ducts.

Salivary gland tumours are rare, representing only 3% of all head and neck neoplasms, with the parotid gland being the most common site (80 %). The risk of malignancy is inversely proportional to the size of the gland: lesions arising in the sublingual or minor salivary glands are more likely to be malignant, whereas parotid gland neoplasms are mostly benign. Fine needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsy are considered the most accurate modalities for the diagnosis of a salivary gland neoplasm; however, they are not always conclusive due to procedural sampling errors and for the prese

INTRODUCTION: Schwannoma is a benign neoplasm that arises from Schwannoma cells found in the peripheral nerve sheath. It's a frequent neoplasm in the head and neck area, but it's exceedingly unusual to find it in the mouth. It's a rare occurrence in the oral cavity of the pediatric age group.
CASE REPORT: We present a 12-year-old kid who has had a smooth, firm, and non-tender mass in the sublingual region for the past year. The mass was removed completely using a transoral technique. The diagnosis of sublingual schwannoma was confirmed by histopathological and immunohistochemical testing.
