For many decades, surgery has been the primary treatment for malignant submandibular gland neoplasms. Nonetheless, due to the heterogeneity and rarity of submandibular gland malignant tumors and the high frequency of chronic benign processes in this region, management can be complex. Preoperative investigations, such as fine-needle aspiration and imaging, are critical to achieve the correct diagnosis so that appropriate surgery can be planned. In general, for malignant submandibular gland neoplasms, the minimal treatment necessary is excision of the submandibular gland with level I lymph node

A sialoblastoma is a rare congenital epithelial tumor that arises in a major salivary gland. To our knowledge, only 24 cases of sialoblastoma have been previously reported in the English-language literature. We report a new case, that of a 15-month-old boy who presented with a submandibular mass. Surgical excision of the mass was undertaken. Intraoperatively, the mass appeared to be adjacent to the submandibular gland, but it had not invaded it. The mass was excised, and the submandibular gland was left in place. Pathology identified the tumor as a sialoblastoma. However, pathology also reveal

OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of the reported high incidence (50%) of malignancy in neoplasms of the submandibular salivary gland, and to compare it with that of the parotid gland.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of major salivary gland neoplasms in 127 patients who were treated between August 1988 and December 2004 (15 1/2 years) at Kalafong Hospital, Pretoria.
RESULTS: All but 1 of the patients were black. There were 100 benign and 27 malignant tumours. Thirty tumours were in the submandibular gland, including 3 malignant tumours, i.e. 10%. Of 97 parotid gland tumours, 24 (24.7

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a highly aggressive neoplasm that generally involves the peritoneum and pelvis of young patients. Only rare cases occur outside the abdomen. We report a case presenting as a primary submandibular gland tumor in a 24-year-old man. Histologically, although there were irregular tumor islands lying in an abundant desmoplastic stroma, there were also areas comprising large cellular islands with scanty stroma in between, raising the differential diagnosis of various salivary gland carcinomas. The tumor cells were medium sized, with hyperchromatic nuclei and mod

The submandibular glands are subject to several pathologies that require excision. The most common problem that affects these salivary glands is sialadenitis combined with sialolithiasis. This problem occurs in the submandibular gland 10 times more frequently than it does in the parotid gland. Other illnesses frequently involving the submandibular glands are represented by sialadenosis and benign, malign, and intermediate neoplasms. Diagnosis of any disturbance in the submandibular gland involves both a clinical and instrumental (echography, traditional radiography [ortopantomography] and even

Of all head and neck neoplasms, 3% are malignant salivary neoplasms. Only 20% of them affect submandibular glands. These tumours vary histologically, which results from the complex embryogenesis of the glands. Malignant submandibular gland tumours are twice as frequent as parotid gland tumours. Simultaneous occurrence of quite different malignant tumours in the same salivary gland is extremely rare. The age range of patients affected with salivary gland neoplasms is wide. However, the occurrence of these neoplasms in children is exceptionally rare. The authors describe a case of a 13-year-old

Cystadenocarcinoma (papillary cystadenocarcinoma) of the salivary gland is a rare malignant neoplasm. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. As far as we know, only one report, written in the French language, has been published concerning cystadenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland, but no report is available in the English language. In this report, we describe a case of cystadenocarcinoma arising from the submandibular gland of a 54-year-old male patient. The neop

The present study updates the experience of salivary gland tumours in Ibadan. All cases of benign and malignant salivary gland neoplasms histologically diagnosed between 1975 and 1995 in the Oral Pathology Department and Cancer Registry of the University College Hospital, Ibadan were reviewed. Salivary gland neoplasms accounted for 3.5% of head and neck neoplasms, the majority (46.5%) occurring in the parotid, followed by the submandibular (18.1%) and palatal glands (10.7%). The ratio of benign to malignant neoplasms was 1.1 to 1. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the

Neoplasms that arise in the salivary glands are relatively rare, yet they represent a wide variety of both benign and malignant histologic subtypes. Approximately 70% of the salivary gland tumors affect parotid gland with the submandibular gland being affected in 5-10% of the cases, sublingual gland in 1% and minor glands in 5-15% of the cases. Submandibular gland tumors are relatively rare and very few studies have been reported in the literature that is exclusively conducted on tumors affecting submandibular gland. In this paper, we describe a case of pleomorphic adenoma affecting submandibu

Tumors of the submandibular gland typically arise from the seromucinous acini, which make up the majority of the gland. The most common benign tumor of this structure is the pleomorphic adenoma, whereas the most common malignancy of the submandibular gland is adenoid cystic carcinoma. We describe an unusual case of a neoplastic process of the myoepithelial cells of the submandibular gland in a middle-aged woman. This rare tumor is most commonly diagnosed in the parotid gland and in the minor salivary glands of the hard palate; a review of the literature uncovered only 5 previous reports of myo

Neoplasms of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands are much less numerous than those of the parotid gland, but they are more often malignant: nearly 50% for the submandibular and 80% for the sublingual glands. A submandibular gland origin also imparts to a given carcinoma a higher degree of biologic malignancy than is expressed by similar tumors in the parotid gland.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: There are few reports focused on neoplasms in the submandibular gland because they are uncommon and are frequently grouped with the other salivary glands tumours. In the classical studies, the proportion of malignancy reported in these cases is around 50%.
OBJECTIVES: Determining the proportion of malignancy, the most frequent histological types, the gender distribution and average age at diagnosis in patients with submandibular gland neoplasms who were treated in our hospital from 2000 year to 2010.
METHODS: A retrospective review of our department database of t

BACKGROUND: The Milan System for Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) is a categorical system for salivary gland fine-needle aspiration cytopathology (FNAC) developed to aid clinicians in the management of salivary gland lesions. This classification is widely studied and validated, especially in cohorts that consist of mostly parotid gland lesions. However, only sparse literature describes the use of this classification for submandibular gland lesions in particular.
METHODS: All patients in the Netherlands that underwent a submandibular gland resection between January 1, 2006, and January 1,

OBJECTIVES: The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) categorizes fine needle aspiration and cytology (FNAC) results into 6 tiers and assigns a risk of malignancy (ROM) to each category. Its utility in submandibular gland lesions remains unclear. Our article aims to study (1) the utility of the MSRSGC in classifying FNAC of submandibular gland masses, (2) describe the demographics and incidence of submandibular gland malignancy in our population, and (3) analyze the accuracy of FNAC in diagnosis of benign and malignant submandibular gland tumors.
METHODS: In this re

OBJECTIVE: Determine presentation and survival rates for malignant pediatric salivary gland neoplasms.
METHODS: All cases of malignant neoplasms involving the parotid or submandibular gland in patients ages birth to 18 years were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (1988-2001). Variables included age, gender, tumor histology, size, follow-up time, and vital status. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were constructed.
RESULTS: 113 primary salivary gland malignancies (103 parotid, 10 submandibular) were identified. Mean age at presentation was 13.2 years. Female:m

INTRODUCTION: A mass in the salivary gland region often presents a diagnostic challenge with regard to its site of origin (salivary versus nonsalivary), benign or malignant nature, and tissue-specific diagnosis. The present study describes the utility of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the diagnosis of these lesions.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Over a 6-year period (January 1994 to December 1999), 712 patients aged between 6 months and 91 years (median, 37 years) were subjected to FNA of swellings in their salivary gland regions. Male:female ratio was 1.28:1. The swellings were mostly loca
