Correlates of Self-Reported HIV Testing Among Patients in Specialized Substance Abuse Treatment Centers in South Africa.

Substance use is a recognized risk factor for HIV acquisition, transmission and progression in South Africa. Persons who use drugs (PWUD) and access specialist substance abuse treatment centers (SSATCs) are a potentially critical target group for HIV services because of the severity of their substance use and associated health risks. SSATCs represent an opportunity for integrated programming, particularly HIV testing services (HTS), to reach PWUD who are at an increased risk of or living with HIV. This analysis of national SSATC admission data explores self-reported HIV testing and associated

Tuberculosis screening in a novel substance abuse treatment center in Malaysia: implications for a comprehensive approach for integrated care.

People who use drugs (PWUD) represent a key high risk group for tuberculosis (TB). The prevalence of both latent TB infection (LTBI) and active disease in drug treatment centers in Malaysia is unknown. A cross-sectional convenience survey was conducted to assess the prevalence and correlates of LTBI among attendees at a recently created voluntary drug treatment center using a standardized questionnaire and tuberculin skin testing (TST). Participants (N=196) were mostly men (95%), under 40 (median age=36 years) and reported heroin use immediately before treatment entry (75%). Positive TST preva

Pretreatment drug use characteristics and experiences among patients in a voluntary substance abuse treatment center in Malaysia: A mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Drug use in Malaysia remains a significant public health and social problem despite implementation of harsh punitive drug policies such as forcibly placing suspected drug users into compulsory drug detention centers (CDDCs). Following criticism over human right violations in CDDCs, Malaysia has begun to transition towards voluntary drug treatment centers known as Cure & Care (C&C) centers. To best serve the needs of regional C&C centers, data on drug use are essential among patients accessing treatment. Using a mixed-methods approach, the authors examined pretreatment drug use char

City's racial composition shapes treatment center characteristics and services.

We assessed the extent to which a city's racial composition shapes the characteristics of substance abuse treatment centers. We utilized both the 2004 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, which provides information on treatment center characteristics such as availability of comprehensive substance abuse evaluation, and 2000 Census data on the percentage of African Americans and Latinos in a city. We found that a city's racial composition influences treatment center characteristics and services available, but the pattern is complex in that there are inequalities in treatment f

African-Americans in public housing: a traditional social work approach to substance abuse treatment.

In recent years, an increased and special emphasis on family issues of public housing residents emerged among social service professionals in northeast Georgia. This emphasis was launched because of the disparity between the number of substance-dependent African-Americans and those who sought and remained in substance abuse treatment programs. The relationship between these factors prompted an examination of preferences for substance abuse treatment among African-Americans in three northeast Georgia public housing complexes. This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a tradition
