[Anxiety disorders and substance-related disorders].

Psychiatric comorbidity between anxiety disorders and substance-related disorders is studied. This relationship is complex due to the overlapping of symptoms (during the abstinence of alcohol and opiates as well as in the intoxication of cocaine) and also for the inaccurate definition of several disorders. Epidemiologic studies show an increase of prevalence of anxiety disorders, mainly agoraphobia and social phobia, in patients who are alcohol dependents and in heroine and cocaine users. Such studies also point out an augmentation of consume of substances (drugs and alcohol), with a prevalenc

[Substance-related disorders and transition psychiatry].

BACKGROUND: Addictive disorders are typically manifested during adolescence and have a high transmission rate into adulthood. When adulthood is reached the responsibility by the child and adolescent psychiatric care system ends and patients transition to adult psychiatry. A lack of supportive concepts and approaches to this transition can have detrimental effects on the long-term health of affected individuals. OBJECTIVE: Addiction treatment requirements of young adults transitioning between the systems of care are presented. Developmental psychopathological concepts are presented and treatme

NOP-Related Mechanisms in Substance Use Disorders.

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) is a 17 amino acid peptide that was deorphanized in 1995 and has been widely studied since. The role of the N/OFQ system in drug abuse has attracted researchers' attention since its initial discovery. The first two scientific papers describing the effect of intracranial injection of N/OFQ appeared 20 years ago and reported efficacy of the peptide in attenuating alcohol intake, whereas heroin self-administration was insensitive. Since then more than 100 scientific articles investigating the role of the N/OFQ and N/OFQ receptor (NOP) system in drug abuse have been

[Defining substance related disorders in administrative health databanks].

Introduction Epidemiogical surveys in the general population can provide relevant information on substance use and substance-related disorders (SRD). However, because of time and resource constraints, this data is limited in its scope. Health administrative databanks consist of routinely collected data covering a large sample size, often representative of the general population. They allow for further longitudinal analyses of comorbidities patterns and health services utilization over decades in individuals with SRD. Developing algorithms to identify these individuals is crucial before being a

Should addictive disorders include non-substance-related conditions?

AIMS: In anticipation of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), to consider whether addictive disorders should include non-substance use disorders. METHODS: The author reviewed data and provided perspective to explore whether disorders such as pathological gambling (PG) should be grouped together with substance dependence, given that they share many features. RESULTS: PG and substance dependence currently reside in the DSM, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) within separate categories, with PG classified as an impulse control disorder (

[Characteristics of sleep disturbances related to substance use disorders].

Sleep disturbances are frequently observed in patients with substance use disorders during active use as well as in withdrawal period and in remission. However, there is limited information about the association between sleep disturbances and substance use disorders. This review summarizes results of the studies on specific characteristics of sleep disturbances related to alcohol, opioids and psychostimulants (cocaine) use. Data on objective and subjective measurements of sleep characteristics at different stages of the course of an addiction disorder (active use, withdrawal, remission) are pr

[Substance-related and addictive disorders in the DSM-5].

This paper concerns the revised classification of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). In DSM-5, substance use disorders are diagnosed on a continuum of severity specified by explicit operationalized diagnostic criteria. "Gambling disorder" is the only behavioral addiction added to the DSM. Furthermore, preliminary criteria for "Caffeine Use Disorder" and "Internet Gaming Disorder" have now been defined in the manual. Adopting the DSM-5 criteria catalogue wit

Structural and functional neuroimaging findings in substance-related disorders.

Intoxication with alcohol results in depressed global glucose metabolism that continues into the stages of withdrawal and abstinence. The decrease in metabolism, however, is not equal across the brain, with certain regions more affected than others. Such a pattern of disturbance suggests that the effect of alcohol on the brain cannot simply be a nonspecific depressant effect secondary to decreased blood flow or glucose transport into the cells but may be related to the dysfunction of the various neurotransmitter systems. Different authors have suggested the dysfunction to be related to the GAB

Liver Disease and Fibrosis Assessment in Substance Use-Related Disorders.

Substance users have the highest prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection but have rarely been treated, largely because of their mistrust of the health care system, misconceptions about the consequences of the infection, and concerns regarding interferon-related side effects. With the development of highly efficacious, interferon-free therapeutic regimens without significant side effects, the concept of colocating HCV and substance use treatment would appear to be highly feasible. This process has been further facilitated by widespread clinical adaptation of noninvasive assays for fibro

An Examination of Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders in Disordered Gamblers Versus Other Substance-Related Disorders.

Substantial changes were made with the creation of the Substance Related and Addictive Disorders category in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; APA in Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 5th edn, American Psychiatric Publishing, Arlington, 2013a), including the addition of gambling disorder to the category and a reduction in the minimum threshold of diagnostic criteria required for a gambling disorder. As gambling shares many similarities with substance use disorders, it stands to reason that comorbidity rates of other psychiatric disorders wo

Work-Related Conversational Skills Training for People with Substance Use Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: There are high rates of unemployment among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) and unemployment can increase the risk of relapse. Additionally, SUD relapse can increase the chance of job loss. However, there is a dearth of research related to the feasibility and acceptability of employment counseling strategies for individuals with SUDs. METHODS: This study is a secondary sub-group analysis of data attained from a pre-post trial (no control group) of the Conversing with Others intervention, a direct skills teaching (DST) approach designed to enhance confidence with work

Fathers' alcohol consumption and risk of substance-related disorders in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed how children are affected by parental alcohol consumption without clinically diagnosed alcohol problems, especially in relation to more long-term and severe consequences. The aim is to investigate how fathers' alcohol use is related to the risk for substance-related disorders in offspring. METHOD: A prospective cohort study of 64 710 Swedish citizens whose fathers were conscripted for compulsory military training at ages 18-20 in 1969/70. Information on fathers' alcohol consumption, frequency of intoxication and apprehended for drunkenness, was collected

Prospective relations between melancholia and substance use disorders.

Examining associations between subtypes of major depressive disorder (MDD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) might elucidate mechanisms of comorbidity between MDD and SUDs. This study evaluated prospective relations between SUDs and melancholic MDD. A cohort of community-dwelling participants with lifetime history of MDD (N = 460) were assessed for DSM-IV mental disorders using structured clinical interviews at ages 24 and 30. Stimulant use disorders and melancholic MDD were prospective risk factors for each other over the 6-year-period following the age-24 assessment. Associations were robus

Emotional Regulation in Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders Treatment: A Systematic Review.

Emotions play an undeniable role in addictive disorders. Given the high relapse and drop-out rates still prevalent in current treatments, it is crucial to explore curative alternatives that take greater account of emotions. The primary objective of this systematic review is to gather literature related to emotion regulation in psychological addictive disorders treatments. The aim is to describe its use for individuals with behavioral (such as gambling disorder, problematic Internet gaming, and Internet addiction) or substance-related disorders. Following a screening of nearly 12,000 articles f
