Electrochemical Dehydration of Sulfonic Acids to Their Anhydrides.

We developed an electrochemical method for sulfonic anhydride synthesis and one-pot derivatization into sulfonamides and mesylates under mild conditions. Aliphatic sulfonic anhydrides were electrogenerated in up to a 74% yield. Since isolating these moisture-sensitive intermediates is challenging, the in situ-generated sulfonic anhydrides were directly converted into sulfonamides or alkyl sulfonates using amines or alcohols, respectively. This scalable process enables the synthesis of various nitrogen- and oxygen-based products in the multigram range.

Sulfur and hydrogen isotope anomalies in meteorite sulfonic acids.

Intramolecular carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur isotope ratios were measured on a homologous series of organic sulfonic acids discovered in the Murchison meteorite. Mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionations were observed along with high deuterium/hydrogen ratios. The deuterium enrichments indicate formation of the hydrocarbon portion of these compounds in a low-temperature environment that is consistent with that of interstellar clouds. Sulfur-33 enrichments observed in methanesulfonic acid could have resulted from gas-phase ultraviolet irradiation of a precursor, carbon disulfide. The source

Systemic toxicity induced by topical application of the sulfonic acids, perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluoropentane sulfonic acid (PFPeS), in a murine model.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of synthetic surfactants incorporated into products for their chemical and physical properties. Studies have associated PFAS with adverse health effects. Although there is a high potential for dermal exposure, toxicity studies related to this route of exposure are lacking. The present study evaluated the systemic toxicity following a sub-chronic 28-day dermal exposure to perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) (1.25-5 %) or perfluoropentane sulfonic acid (PFPeS) (1.25-5 %) in a murine model. Elevated levels of both PFAS were detected in

Re-evaluation of turbidimetry of proteins by use of aromatic sulfonic acids and chloroacetic acids.

From studies on 11 different proteins (including native albumin and albumin with reduced disulfide-bridges) treated with sulfosalicylic, 2-naphthalenesulfonic, toluenesulfonic, dichloroacetic, or trichloroacetic acids, we elucidate the interactions determining the resulting turbidities and other factors affecting turbidities, and we discuss the clinical utility of such turbidimetry. At least three interactions are important in determining turbidity: reduction of positive charges on the protein, hydrogen bonding of the non-ionized chloroacetic acids with the protein, and hydrophobic interaction

A chemical kinetic model for the decomposition of perfluorinated sulfonic acids.

Perfluorinated sulfonic acids (such as perfluorooctanesulfonic, PFOS, and short-chain analogues) are notorious halogenated pollutants that exhibit severe toxicity, even at minute levels. Limited number of experimental studies addressed their thermal decomposition at elevated temperatures. Such scenarios are particularly relevant to open fires and incineration of materials laden with perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs). Herein, we construct a detail kinetic model that illustrates major chemical reactions underpinning initial degradation of 1-butanesulfonic acid (CF3(CF2)3SO2OH), as a model compound

High Proton Conductivity of 3D Graphene Oxide Intercalated with Aromatic Sulfonic Acids.

The development of efficient proton conductors that are capable of high power density, sufficient mechanical strength, and reduced gas permeability is challenging. Herein, we report the development of a series of aromatic sulfonic acid/graphene oxide hybrid membranes incorporating benzene sulfonic acid (BS), naphthalene sulfonic acid (NS), naphthalene disulfonic acid (DS) or pyrene sulfonic acid (PS) using a facile freeze dried method. For out-of-plane proton conductivity, the 3DGO-BS and 3DGO-NS yielded proton conductivities of 4.4×10-2  S cm-1 and 3.1×10-2  S cm-1 , respectively; this repres

Ultra-low current electrospray ionization of chloroform solution for the analysis of perfluorinated sulfonic acids.

RATIONALE: Femtoamp and picoamp electrospray ionization (ESI) characteristics of a nonpolar solvent were explored. The direct ESI mass spectrometry analysis of chloroform extract solution enabled rapid analysis of perfluorinated sulfonic acid analytes in drinking water. METHODS: Neat chloroform solvent and extracts were directly used in a typical wire-in ESI setup using micrometer emitter tips. Ionization currents were measured with femtoamp sensitivity while ramping the spray voltage from 0 to -5000 V. Methanol was used as a comparison to illustrate the characteristics of electrospraying chl

Prenatal exposure to chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids and perfluoroalkyl acids: Potential role of maternal determinants and associations with birth outcomes.

Transplacental exposure to per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) may impact fetal growth, but published evidence are still sparse and not in agreement. Moreover, little is known on the occurrence of emerging chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs, 6:2 and 8:2) in maternal-neonatal population. This study investigated eleven PFASs by analyzing 98 cord samples from Hangzhou, China. All target compounds can be transported across placenta, with highest median concentrations of 4.07, 1.05 and 0.731 ng/mL for PFOS, PFOA, and 6:2 Cl-PFESA. Older ages and higher pre-pregnancy BMI were

Effect of perfluoroalkyl chain length on proton conduction in fluoroalkylated phosphonic, phosphinic, and sulfonic acids.

The effects of increasing perfluoroalkyl chain length on the molecular properties of viscosity, diffusivity, and ionic conductivity of a series of acid model compounds analogous to comb-branch perfluorinated ionomers functionalized with phosphonic, phosphinic, and sulfonic protogenic groups are reported. Anhydrous proton transport by a Grotthuss-like hopping mechanism was observed to occur efficiently in phosphorus-based fluoroalkylated model acids but only when there is a relatively low perfluoroalkyl content. The decrease in degree of dissociation of the protogenic groups follows the order p

Ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone catalyzed by sulfonic acids: computational evidence for bifunctional activation.

The mechanism of ring-opening of ε-caprolactone by methanol catalyzed by trifluoromethane and methane sulfonic acids has been studied computationally at the DFT level of theory. For both elementary steps, the sulfonic acid was predicted to behave as a bifunctional catalyst. The nucleophilic addition proceeds via activation of both the monomer and the alcohol. The ring-opening involves the cleavage of the endo C-O bond of the tetrahedral intermediate with concomitant proton transfer. In both cases, the sulfonic acid acts as a proton shuttle via its acidic hydrogen atom and basic oxygen atoms. T

Effects of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids on developmental, physiological, and immunological measures in northern leopard frog tadpoles.

The chronic toxicity of short chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), such as perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), are relatively understudied despite the increasing detection of these compounds in the environment. We investigated the chronic toxicity and bioconcentration of PFBS and PFHxS using northern leopard frog (Rana [Lithobates] pipiens) tadpoles. We exposed Gosner stage (GS) 25 tadpoles to either PFBS or PFHxS at nominal concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/L until metamorphosis (GS42). We then assessed tadpole growth, development

Long term rebound and transport of perfluorinated sulfonic acids (PFSAs) in the vadose zone following flushing.

Increases in perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) porewater concentrations over a 35 month duration following in situ flushing were monitored at an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) site using porous cup suction lysimeters within a highly instrumented test cell. Results provided evidence that perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) slow desorption kinetics contributed to slow contaminant rebound in measured porewater concentrations. PFSAs in the shallow (0.23 m depth) highly PFSA-impacted soils migrated downward during the monitored post-flushing period, with short-chained PFSAs migrating more rapidly

Blood compatibility of polyurethane immobilized with acrylic acid and plasma grafting sulfonic acid.

Sulfonic and carboxyl groups can effectively improve the blood compatibility of polyurethane. But it is difficult to obtain an optimum ratio of the two groups. In this article, polyurethane (PU) was dissolved with acrylic acid in a tetrahydrofuran solution and then spread on the glass plate to produce a film. At the same time, acrylic acid partly polymerized and immobilized with the PU films. The films (PU-AA) were exposed to sulfur dioxide plasma to graft sulfonic acid group on its surfaces. Through adjusting the quantity of acrylic acid and the plasma reaction condition, the antithrombin of

Bioaccumulation dynamics of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and a binary mixture of PFOS and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) in northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus): a mini review.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with significant bioaccumulation potential and toxicological concerns. Specifically, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) has been shown to reduce growth, reduce hatching success and decrease hatchling survivability, and arrest developmental cycles in birds. While the transfer of PFAS from exposed adult birds to their offspring is recognized, the routes of maternal transfer are not yet fully elucidated. Therefore, this mini review synthesizes previously collected. PFAS tissue residue data from a series of chro

Ultra-Short-Chain Perfluoroalkyl Acids Including Trifluoromethane Sulfonic Acid in Water Connected to Known and Suspected Point Sources in Sweden.

Data presenting the environmental occurrence of ultra-short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are scarce and little is known about the potential sources. In this study, ultra-short-chain PFAAs were analyzed in water connected to potential point sources using supercritical fluid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Samples (n = 34) were collected in connection with firefighting training sites, landfills, and a hazardous waste management facility. Ultra-short-chain PFAAs were detected in all samples at concentrations up to 84 000 ng/L (∑C1-C3), representing up to 69% of the con

Risk to human health related to the presence of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid in food.

The European Commission asked EFSA for a scientific evaluation on the risks to human health related to the presence of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in food. Regarding PFOS and PFOA occurrence, the final data set available for dietary exposure assessment contained a total of 20,019 analytical results (PFOS n = 10,191 and PFOA n = 9,828). There were large differences between upper and lower bound exposure due to analytical methods with insufficient sensitivity. The CONTAM Panel considered the lower bound estimates to be closer to true exposure levels. Im
