Reducing Pollution, Restoring Balance: The Microbiology of Sulfur-Reducing Bacteria in Textile Wastewater Treatment.

The textile industry releases large volumes of harmful chemicals, including residual dyes and xenobiotics-synthetic or foreign compounds not naturally produced or expected in living systems, such as dyes, surfactants, and pesticides. These pollutants contribute to environmental toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. While physicochemical treatments are commonly employed for dye and heavy metal removal, bioremediation using microorganisms offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative. Diverse microbial groups, including bacteria, fungi, and microalgae, can degrade textile pollutants t

Sulfate-reducing bacteria and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria interactions at redox interfaces: Implications for mercury methylation.

Methylmercury (MeHg), the most neurotoxic and bioaccumulative mercury (Hg) species, poses significant risks to human and ecosystem health. Predicting these risks requires elucidating the drivers of MeHg production, which peaks at redox interfaces in aquatic systems where the primary Hg methylators, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), are most active. Elevated Hg(II) methylation at these zones is primarily driven by the active sulfur cycling, primarily mediated by Hg-methylating SRB and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) interactions. This review explores possible mechanisms enhancing Hg(II) methylat

Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in oil reservoir and biological control of SRB: a review.

Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) inhabit oilfield production systems. Sulfur oxidation driven by SOB and dissimilatory sulfate reduction driven by SRB play important roles in sulfur cycle of oil reservoirs. More importantly, hydrogen sulfide produced by SRB is an acidic, flammable, and smelly toxic gas associated with reservoir souring, corrosion of oil-production facilities, and personnel safety. Effective control of SRB is urgently needed for the oil industry. This depends on an in-depth understanding of the microbial species that drive sulfur cycle and oth

Influence of short-term changes in dietary sulfur on the relative abundances of intestinal sulfate-reducing bacteria.

High-protein diets may be linked to gut inflammation due to increased production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a potential toxin, as an end product of microbial fermentation in the colon by sulfidogenic sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). We hypothesized that dietary content of sulfur-containing amino acids (SAA) leads to variation in the relative abundances of intestinal SRB, which include Desulfovibrio and Bilophila taxa. To test this hypothesis we performed a pilot crossover study in four healthy volunteers, who consumed two interventional diets for 10-14 days, containing high or low SAA content.

Proinflammatory Sulfur-Reducing Bacteria Are More Abundant in Colonic Biopsies of Patients with Microscopic Colitis Compared to Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic colitis (MC), a subtype of inflammatory bowel disease, is a chronic condition of unknown etiology. Recent evidence has linked MC with intriguing changes in the stool microbiota, which may be linked to disease pathogenesis. The composition of the mucosal microbiome in patients with MC remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study comparing colonic tissue samples from patients with MC to those of healthy controls at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. We included adults older than 18 who underwent a colonoscopy with biopsies to evaluate chronic dia

Two marine sulfur-reducing bacteria co-culture is essential for productive infection by a T4-like Escherichia coli-infecting phage.

The control of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) challenges the oil exploration sector. The MIC results from electrochemical reactions facilitated by microorganisms such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which adhere to the surface of the ducts forming biofilms. SRB uses sulfate as the final electron acceptor, resulting in hydrogen sulfide as the final product, a highly reactive corrosive, and toxic compound. Due to the high diversity of the SRB group, this study evaluated the effect of an Escherichia coli phage, with biofilm degrading enzymes, in preventing biofilm formation by m

The role of interface interaction between iron/sulfate-reducing bacteria (ISRB) and goethite in sulfur (S) redox cycling couple with Cd immobilization.

Microbial sulfate reduction leads to the formation of various chalcophile trace metal sulfides, thereby immobilizing chalcophile trace metals in sediments. Iron/sulfate-reducing bacteria (ISRB) are ubiquitous in soils and sediments, its ability to reduce Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides and biogeochemical significance have attracted much attention. This research investigated the effect of the goethite and ISRB induced S cycle on cadmium mobility. The experiment demonstrated that the removal of Cd(II) in coexistence of ISRB19 and goethite was more efficiently than their individual components. Combined w

Long-Term Feeding of Elemental Sulfur Alters Microbial Community Structure and Eliminates Mercury Methylation Potential in Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Abundant Activated Sludge.

This study reported a novel observation that the long-term cultivation of sulfur-reducing bacteria (S0RB) from a sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-abundant seeding sludge with elemental sulfur feeding significantly shaped the microbial community structure and eliminated the mercury methylation potential in the S0RB-enriched sludge. In this study, the enrichments of SRB and S0RB from activated sludge were obtained through long-term cultivations. Subsequently, the batch tests showed that approximately 5000 μg/L Hg (II) was completely removed from the solution by both the SRB-enriched and S0RB-enri

Microbial conversion of sulfur dioxide in flue gas to sulfide using bulk drug industry wastewater as an organic source by mixed cultures of sulfate reducing bacteria.

Mixed cultures of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were isolated from anaerobic cultures and enriched with SRB media. Studies on batch and continuous reactors for the removal of SO(2) with bulk drug industry wastewater as an organic source using isolated mixed cultures of SRB revealed that isolation and enrichment methodology adopted in the present study were apt to suppress the undesirable growth of anaerobic bacteria other than SRB. Studies on anaerobic reactors showed that process was sustainable at COD/S ratio of 2.2 and above with optimum sulfur loading rate (SLR) of 5.46kgS/(m(3)day), org

Reactive Transport Model of Sulfur Cycling as Impacted by Perchlorate and Nitrate Treatments.

Microbial souring in oil reservoirs produces toxic, corrosive hydrogen sulfide through microbial sulfate reduction, often accompanying (sea)water flooding during secondary oil recovery. With data from column experiments as constraints, we developed the first reactive-transport model of a new candidate inhibitor, perchlorate, and compared it with the commonly used inhibitor, nitrate. Our model provided a good fit to the data, which suggest that perchlorate is more effective than nitrate on a per mole of inhibitor basis. Critically, we used our model to gain insight into the underlying competing

Analysis of sulfur transformation pathways in coal-carbonate superimposed strata: Considering carbonate buffering and microbial promotion.

Sulfur pollution is pervasive in coal-carbonate superimposed strata. The oxidation of sulfide minerals in coal produces high-sulfate, acidic wastewater, while sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) can metabolize sulfate to produce hydrogen sulfide, posing potential threats to mining safety and environmental quality. To analyze the environmental risks associated with sulfur, this study integrates field surveys, laboratory simulations, and theoretical analysis to elucidate the mechanisms. The results demonstrate that sulfate concentrations increase significantly in coal-bearing strata, whereas they de

Biofilm-constrained sulfidogenesis: Mechanisms, inhibition strategies, and a framework for sustainable control.

Sulfidogenesis by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) causes odor emissions, microbiologically influenced corrosion, and operational failures in wastewater, petroleum, and other anaerobic engineered systems. Although numerous chemical and biological strategies have been developed to suppress sulfide production, their effectiveness in field applications often remains inconsistent. This review argues that the long-recognized discrepancy between laboratory inhibition and field-scale control originates fundamentally from biofilm-imposed transport limitation, metabolic stratification, and ecological re

A novel biological sulfur reduction process for mercury-contaminated wastewater treatment.

The sulfidogenic process driven by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is not suitable for mercury-contaminated wastewater treatment due to the highly toxic methyl-mercury (MeHg) produced by SRB. In our previous study, we observed in short-term batch tests that sulfur-reducing bacteria (S0RB) could remove mercury ions without MeHg production. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop a biological sulfur reduction process driven by S0RB for mercury-contaminated wastewater, and investigate its long-term performance on mercury removal and MeHg accumulation. Receiving mercury-contaminated wastewater c

The Nitratidesulfovibrio sp. and Thermodesulfomicrobium sp.: Isolated Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria From Ahvaz Oilfield in Khouzestan.

The petroleum importance to human beings highlights the oil reservoirs' microbiology significance. It is crucial to develop remediation strategies, especially for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Accordingly, this work aimed to isolate, characterize, and enumerate SRB from industrial water samples in Ahvaz and compare the results with meta-analysis. Following the enrichment at Postgate's B medium (PGB) and viable cell counting by the MPN statistical approach, a PCR amplification was performed. Beside verifying the SRB contamination via FeS formation, a high bacterial load was confirmed by MPN.

Use of sulfate reducing cell suspension bioreactors for the treatment of SO2 rich flue gases.

This paper describes a novel bioscrubber concept for biological flue gas desulfurization, based on the recycling of a cell suspension of sulfite/sulfate reducing bacteria between a scrubber and a sulfite/sulfate reducing hydrogen fed bioreactor. Hydrogen metabolism in sulfite/sulfate reducing cell suspensions was investigated using batch activity tests and by operating a completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The maximum specific hydrogenotrophic sulfite/sulfate reduction rate increased with 10% and 300%, respectively, by crushing granular inoculum sludge and by cultivation of this sludge as

Microbial reduction of sulfur dioxide with pretreated sewage sludge and elemental hydrogen as electron donors.

It has been demonstrated tht heat- and alkali-pretreated-sewage sludge may serve as an electron donor and carbon source for SO2 reduction by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. A continuous D. desulfuricans culture was operated for 6 mo with complete reduction of SO2 to H2S. The culture required only minor amounts of mineral nutrients in addition to pretreated sewage sludge. It has also been shown that the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfotomaculum orientis can be grown on H2 as an energy source, CO2 as a carbon source, and SO2 as a terminal electron acceptor. Complete reduction of SO2 to H2S was ob

Productivity-induced sulphur enrichment of hydrocarbon-rich sediments from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation.

This work aims to highlight the relationship between primary productivity, sulphate reduction and organic carbon preservation in cyclic marine sediments from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation. A concomitant increase of the total sulphur content with the preserved organic content (TOC), shows the progressive supply of both metabolisable organic matter and resistant organic matter is linked to primary productivity. However, variations in sulphate reduction efficiency, based on elemental abundance and isotopic composition of sulphur, reveal that the proportion of metabolisable vs. resistant organic m
