Is it feasible to alter the ground-state properties of a material by engineering its electromagnetic environment? Inspired by theoretical predictions1-12, experimental realizations of such cavity-controlled properties without optical excitation are beginning to emerge13-19. Here we devised and implemented a new platform to realize cavity-altered materials. Single crystals of hyperbolic van der Waals (vdW) compounds provide a resonant electromagnetic environment with enhanced density of photonic states and prominent mode confinement20-24. We interfaced hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) with the mol

Unconventional superconductivity, where electron pairing does not involve electron-phonon interactions, is often attributed to magnetic correlations in a material. Well known examples include high-Tc cuprates and uranium-based heavy fermion superconductors. Less explored are unconventional superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, where interactions between spin-polarised electrons and external magnetic field can result in multiple superconducting phases and field-induced transitions between them, a rare phenomenon in the superconducting state. Here we report a magnetic-field driven pha

The recent discovery of superconductivity above 200 K in hydrogen sulfide under high pressure marks a milestone in superconductor research. Not only does its critical temperature Tc exceed the previous record in cuprates by more than 50 K, the superconductivity in hydrogen sulfide also exhibits convincing evidence that it is of conventional phonon-mediated type. Moreover, this is the first time that a previously unknown high-Tc superconductor is predicted by theory and afterwards verified by experiment. In this Minireview, we survey the progress made in the last three years in understanding th

Unconventional superconductivity is a desirable state of matter due to its potential for high transition temperatures T_{c} and associated favorable superconducting properties. However, the sign-changing nature of the order parameter of unconventional superconductors renders their condensates fragile to disorder, an inevitability in real materials. We uncover the generic properties of electronic band structures and associated Bloch weights able to support robust unconventional superconductivity. We demonstrate this property in several case studies of the kagome and Lieb lattices, showing how u

A magnetic field typically suppresses superconductivity by either breaking Cooper pairs via the Zeeman effect or inducing vortex formation. However, under certain circumstances, a magnetic field can stabilize superconductivity instead. This seemingly counterintuitive phenomenon is associated with magnetic interactions and has been extensively studied in three-dimensional materials. By contrast, this phenomenon, hinting at unconventional superconductivity, remains largely unexplored in two-dimensional systems, with moiré-patterned graphene being the only known example. Here, we report the obser

Lanthanum-based compounds are cornerstones of superconductivity research, yet the La 5d orbitals typically remain empty spectator states far above the Fermi level (EF). While superconductivity has been induced in LaO up to 5.37 K in tensile epitaxy films, the intrinsic ground state of the bulk phase has remained controversial mostly due to synthetic challenges, with early reports suggesting a metallic nature. Here we report the high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis of pure bulk rock-salt LaO and unveil its intrinsic type-II superconductivity with a transition temperature (TC) of ∼6 K at

Crystal stacking offers a powerful yet underexplored route to engineer symmetry in layered superconductors. Here we report superconductivity in rhombohedral-stacked NbSe_{2} (3R-NbSe_{2}), a noncentrosymmetric polytype in which global inversion symmetry is removed by stacking alone. Using comprehensive structural, transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements, we establish superconductivity as a bulk property of the 3R phase and find that the in-plane upper critical field exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit, indicating the persistence of strong Ising-type spin-orbit coupling. Unlike the

The discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene1-5 has generated tremendous interest. The key feature of these systems is an interplay between interlayer coupling and a moiré superlattice that gives rise to low-energy flat bands with strong correlations6. Flat bands can also be induced by moiré patterns in lattice-mismatched and/or twisted heterostructures of other two-dimensional materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)7,8. Although a wide range of correlated phenomena have indeed been observed in moiré TMDs9-19, robust demonstration of supercondu

A two-dimensional, anisotropic superconductivity was recently found at the KTaO3(111) interfaces. The nature of the anisotropic superconducting transition remains a subject of debate. To investigate the origins of the observed behavior, we grew epitaxial KTaO3(111)-based heterostructures. We show that the superconductivity is robust against the in-plane magnetic field and violates the Pauli limit. We also show that the Cooper pairs are more resilient when the bias is along [11[Formula: see text]] (I ∥ [11[Formula: see text]]) and the magnetic field is along [1[Formula: see text]0] (B ∥ [1[Form

The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in (La,Ba)2CuO4 (ref. 1) has motivated the study of compounds with similar crystal and electronic structure, with the aim of finding additional superconductors and understanding the origins of copper oxide superconductivity. Isostructural examples include bulk superconducting Sr2RuO4 (ref. 2) and surface-electron-doped Sr2IrO4, which exhibits spectroscopic signatures consistent with a superconducting gap3,4, although a zero-resistance state has not yet been observed. This approach has also led to the theoretical investigation of nickelates5,6,

Twisted bilayers offer a platform for engineering new twistronic materials. Whereas standard studies focus on the enigma of twist-angles, epitomized by twisted graphene bilayers, functional devices face a fundamental concern: boundary heterogeneity. In this study, we address this by investigating the electronic and vibrational properties of twisted bismuth bilayer flakes. Twisted flakes exhibit interesting variations of these properties, away from the bulk, as we report herein using ab initio density functional theory, systematically mapping the evolution of the electronic density of states, t

This review is organized into three parts. In the first part, we explore the deep interconnections among three seemingly unrelated concepts in condensed matter physics: electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases, multipole expansions, and altermagnetism (AM). At the heart of these phenomena lies a shared foundation: spin-momentum locking in the nonrelativistic regime. Originally proposed in the context of ELC phases, nonrelativistic spin-momentum locking (NRSML) was later elegantly incorporated into the formalism of multipole expansions. This framework can be further extended across multiple atomi

Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates offer a route to high-temperature superconductivity beyond cuprates and iron pnictides. However, the electronic reconstruction enabling superconductivity in bilayer nickelates remains unresolved, largely due to the difficulty of directly probing superconducting samples. Here we stabilize superconducting (La,Pr)3Ni2O7 thin films with a protective capping layer, enabling direct X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements. Across insulating, superconducting and metallic samples, we track the evolution of in-plane and out-of-plane electronic s

Achieving high-temperature superconductivity has long been a formidable challenge. Organic materials, characterized by their flexible intermolecular interactions (including the flexibility of polymer chains) and hydrogen-rich composition, offer significant potential for realizing high-temperature superconductivity under relatively mild conditions. This review comprehensively summarizes the research progress in organic superconducting materials, including organic charge-transfer salts, carbon-based materials, aromatic compounds, and polymers. We elaborate on the structures and superconducting p

The heavy fermion compound CeRhIn5 is a rare example where a quantum critical point, hidden by a dome of superconductivity, has been explicitly revealed and found to have a local nature. The lack of additional examples of local types of quantum critical points associated with superconductivity, however, has made it difficult to unravel the role of quantum fluctuations in forming Cooper pairs. Here, we show the precise control of superconductivity by tunable quantum critical points in CeRhIn5. Slight tin-substitution for indium in CeRhIn5 shifts its antiferromagnetic quantum critical point from

Ising superconductivity allows in-plane upper critical magnetic fields to vastly surpass Pauli limit by locking the antiparallel electron spins of Cooper pairs in the out-of-plane direction. It was first explicitly demonstrated in fully two-dimensional monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides with large spin-orbit coupling and broken inversion symmetry. Since then, several studies have shown that it can be present in layered bulk materials, too. In our previous study, we have clarified the underlying microscopic mechanism of Ising superconductivity in bulk, based on a reduced electronic

Weyl topological superconductivity (TSC) is an exotic superconducting state featuring topologically protected point gap nodes and Bogoliubov-Majorana Fermi arcs. However, its realization remains rare, often requiring complicated band structures or fine-tuned spin-orbit coupling. Here, we propose a universal and robust mechanism to generate Weyl TSC relying solely on 3D cubic lattice symmetry under repulsive electron-electron interaction. Standard group theory combined with Ginzburg-Landau analysis reveals that generalizing the [Formula: see text]-wave pairing in the 2D square lattice, typicall

The bilayer nickelate La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7} has recently emerged as a high-temperature superconductor with unusual spin stripe order in its ambient pressure phase. We propose a microscopic Hamiltonian that faithfully reflects the crystalline symmetry of this system, with the primary aim of addressing its unconventional magnetism at ambient pressure. Using state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations, we show that (π/2,π/2) spin stripe order arises in our model at sizable Hund's coupling J_{H} from a hidden quasi one-dimensionality and persists over a range of electron concent

Most superconducting materials are well understood and conventional-that is, the pairs of electrons that cause the superconductivity by their condensation have the highest possible symmetry. Famous exceptions are the enigmatic high-temperature (high-Tc) cuprate superconductors1. Nodes in their superconducting gap are the fingerprint of their unconventional character and imply superconducting pairing of d-wave symmetry. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe that the Weyl semimetal PtBi2 harbours nodes in its superconducting gap, implying unconventional i-wave pair

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity, studying the upper critical field and its anisotropy has been crucial for understanding the superconducting mechanism and guiding applications. Here, we perform in situ high-pressure angular-dependent electrical transport measurements on Pr4Ni3O10 single crystals using a custom diamond anvil cell (DAC) rotator, confirming its anisotropic superconductivity. The anisotropy parameter γ, derived from the upper critical fields (μ0Hc2) for H⊥ab and H//ab, is approximately 1.6, decreasing with increasing temperature and approaching 1 near Tc.
