Increased Stiffness Is Evidenced in the Deep But Not Superficial Lumbar Multifidus Muscle in Professional Athletes With Chronic Low Back Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Elevated lumbar multifidus stiffness has been observed in populations with chronic low back pain (LBP). However, the modulation of deep (DLM) and superficial (SLM) lumbar multifidus stiffness, considering their distinct structural characteristics and functions, remains unaddressed, especially in athletes. This study aimed to compare differences in DLM and SLM stiffness in professional athletes from different sports with and without chronic LBP. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: This study was conducted at a provincial sports training center. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-nine profe

The effect of chronic, non-specific low back pain on superficial lumbar muscle activity: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic, non-specific low back pain is a major global cause of disability. One factor which might potentially contribute to ongoing pain is maladaptive variation in the level of activity in the lumbar musculature. Several studies have investigated this activity using surface electromyography, in varied muscles and during a number of functional activities. Due to differences in the applied methodology, the results have been difficult to compare, and previous reviews have been limited in scope. In this protocol, we aim to perform a comprehensive review of the effect of chronic low

Reduced Trunk Coupling in Persons With Recurrent Low Back Pain Is Associated With Greater Deep-to-Superficial Trunk Muscle Activation Ratios During the Balance-Dexterity Task.

BACKGROUND: Motor control dysfunction persisting during symptom remission in persons with recurrent low back pain (LBP) may contribute to the recurrence of pain. OBJECTIVES: To investigate trunk control in persons in remission from recurrent LBP and in back-healthy controls using a dynamic, internally driven balance task. No differences in task performance were expected between groups, but it was hypothesized that persons with recurrent LBP would exhibit greater trunk coupling, consistent with a trunk-stiffening strategy. METHODS: In this cross-sectional controlled laboratory study, persons

Trapezius or facial muscles: Which one is more suitable for the measurement of stress using sEMG signals?

A number of techniques have been reported to detect mental stress. Surface Electromyography (sEMG) has also been used to measure stress by acquiring the signals from various sites of the human body, however, consensus need to be established to determine the best possible site to harvest stress related information. In this study, work related mental stress using sEMG signals acquired from trapezius muscle and facial muscles were compared. BIOPAC signal acquisition system was used to acquire sEMG signals simultaneously from both trapezius and facial muscles from forty five (45) healthy volunteer

Levator scapulae and rhomboid minor are united.

Pain over the superior angle of the scapula is a common musculoskeletal symptom. It is often accompanied by radiating pain to the neck, head, and shoulder. The aetiologies can be varied but may also be idiopathic in nature. To explore the fascial connections of this region, we studied 26 unembalmed, -two Thiel and one alcohol body-donors of science, by dissection, histological probes, and plastinations. When removing the descending and transverse fibres of the trapezius, a large prominent triangular area of white connectives is revealed, varying in mass. A subdivision of these connectives can

Optimal needle electromyography approach to the serratus anterior muscle.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: There are two conventional needle electromyography (EMG) approaches to the serratus anterior (SA), both of which can result in erroneous insertion into adjacent structures such as the latissimus dorsi (LD), teres major, or external oblique abdominis muscles and pose a risk of long thoracic nerve (LTN) injury. Therefore, we identified a novel needle insertion point for the SA in cadavers that avoids other muscles and LTN injury. METHODS: This study included 17 cadavers: 12 to devise the new method and 5 to verify its accuracy. Novel landmarks were the inferior angle of the s

Impact of a 10-min typing task in the development of trapezius myalgia: a preliminary observational study.

Objectives. Computer use, as in typing, might contribute to trapezius myalgia (TM) development by increasing upper trapezius (UT) muscle fatigue. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether 10 min of performing a typing task by a population at risk would show significant changes in surface electromyography (sEMG) and pressure pain threshold (PPT) measurements. Supported and unsupported forearms postures are compared. Methods. Sixteen asymptomatic volunteers with minimum daily use of a computer of 5 h were randomized into two groups: fully supported forearms (n = 8) and unsupported fore

Effects of Temporary and Permanent Muscle Denervation on Fat Graft Retention in the Latissimus Dorsi Muscle: An Experimental Study in Rats.

BACKGROUND: In breast reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi flap, immediate fat grafting is useful for increasing flap volume. However, factors such as latissimus dorsi muscle atrophy and fat graft retention affect the volume of the reconstructed breast, and reports are inconsistent regarding treatment of the thoracodorsal nerve. This study examined how thoracodorsal nerve treatment affects the rates of latissimus dorsi flap preservation and fat graft retention using a rat model. METHODS: Fat harvested from the inguinal region was grafted to the latissimus dorsi muscle elevated as a pedicled

Is workload associated with latissimus dorsi and teres major tears in professional baseball pitchers? An analysis of days of rest, innings pitched, and batters faced.

BACKGROUND: Latissimus dorsi (LD) and teres major (TM) tears have become increasingly recognized injuries in professional baseball pitchers. The purpose of this study was to determine whether workload, as measured by the number of days of rest between outings, number of innings pitched, number of batters faced, and being a starting pitcher, is associated with an increased risk of sustaining an LD-TM tear in professional baseball pitchers. METHODS: All professional baseball pitchers who sustained an LD-TM tear between 2011 and 2017 were identified using the Major League Baseball Health and Inj

Biomechanical Consequences of Using Passive and Active Back-Support Exoskeletons during Different Manual Handling Tasks.

The aim of this study was to assess, for both men and women, the consequences of using different back-support exoskeletons during various manual material tasks (MMH) on the activity of back muscles and trunk kinematics. Fifteen men and fourteen women performed MMH involving a 15 kg load (a static task, a symmetric lifting task, and an asymmetric lifting task). Four exoskeleton conditions were tested: without equipment (CON) and with three exoskeletons passive (P-EXO), and active (A-EXO1 and A-EXO2)). The electromyographic activity of the lower trapezius (TZ), latissimus dorsi (LD), erector spi

Axillary arch muscle and pectoralis quartus: an unusual combination of two variant supernumerary muscles in the axillary region - a case report.

Variant anatomy in the axillary region is of great clinical significance. It is one of the most frequently accessed regions for radical dissection surgery. During routine dissection of embalmed cadavers, we found a rare case of two accessory muscular slips emerging from the lateral border of latissimus dorsi (LD) and the inferolateral border of pectoralis major (PM), crossing the neurovascular structures in the axilla and merging distally together to the brachial fascia at the upper end of humerus below the bicipital groove. The accessory slip from LD is commonly referred to as the "axillary a

Variations of the trapezius branch of the accessory nerve: an anatomic study.

Although modified radical neck dissections have increased in popularity to reduce morbidity secondary to intraoperative accessory nerve damage, inadvertent injury still often occurs. As this phenomenon is thought to be due to anatomic variation in the trapezius branch of the accessory nerve, it is imperative to better understand the nuances of these anatomic variations to better inform surgical decision-making. A total of 24 accessory nerves were dissected, exposed, and traced in 15 cadavers. Three aspects of the accessory nerve were identified and recorded: the course of the trapezius branch

Ultrasonographic Analysis of Trapezius Muscle for Efficient Botulinum Toxin Type A Injection.

BACKGROUND: Patients nowadays seek medical reduction of the upper trapezius muscle to achieve aesthetic pleasing necklines. Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), a neurotoxin that reduces the force of muscle contraction, is widely used for shoulder contouring. However, detailed metrical data are lacking to guide clinical injection. METHODS: Forty healthy young women were enrolled. All subjects were seated for point marking and measuring of trapezius muscle (TM) anatomical data. At marked locations, the thickness of the subcutaneous tissue, the thickness of the TM, the TM's anterior border, and the

Kinesiologic considerations for targeting activation of scapulothoracic muscles - part 2: trapezius.

BACKGROUND: The trapezius is an extensive muscle subdivided into upper, middle, and lower parts. This muscle is a dominant stabilizer of the scapula, normally operating synergistically with other scapular muscles, most notably the serratus anterior. Altered activation, poor control, or reduced strength of the different parts of the trapezius have been linked with abnormal scapular movements, often associated with pain. Several exercises have been designed and studied that specifically target the different parts of the trapezius, with the goal of developing exercises that optimize scapular posi

The hypaxial origin of the epaxially located rhomboid muscles.

In vertebrates, skeletal muscles of the body are made up of epaxial and hypaxial muscles based on their innervation and relative position to the vertebral column. The epaxial muscles are innervated by the dorsal branches of the spinal nerves and comprise the intrinsic (deep) back muscles, while the hypaxial muscles are innervated by the ventral branches of the spinal nerves including the plexus and consist of a heterogeneous group of intercostal, abdominal, and limb as well as girdle muscles. The canonical view holds that the epaxial muscles are derived from the medial halves of the somites, w
