The initial clinical findings that form the basis for the diagnosis of puerperal SSSVT are frequently quite subtle. It is essential to a favorable outcome that clinicians maintain a high index of suspicion in relation to physical complaints of puerperal women. Meticulous, comprehensive, multisystem assessment is indicated to explore fully the presentation of headache, weakness, or other subjective data when discovered. Headaches can easily be attributed to a multitude of factors associated with birth. These include fatigue, stress, complications of anesthesia, fluid and electrolyte imbalances,

Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis is an uncommon phenomenon that could occur in patients with a risk for thrombosis. It has been reported after spinal anesthesia with persistent cerebrospinal fluid leak. The current case is a young 29-year-old man who was complaining of persistent headache after spinal anesthesia for varicocelectomy and a new onset of blurred vision with a sign of papilledema. The diagnosis was confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging and proved to be superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. He was started on anticoagulant therapy and showed gradual improvement. No previous case

Intracranial tumours such as meningiomas may occasionally produce raised intracranial pressure by occluding a venous sinus. More uncommonly, midline tumours in the occipital regions of the skull can produce elevated intracranial pressure by non-thrombotic compression of the superior sagittal sinus. We present a case of raised intracranial pressure secondary to non-thrombotic obstruction of the superior sagittal sinus by a midline tuberculous abscess.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the anatomic relationship between the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and the sagittal suture in infants with uncorrected unicoronal synostosis. The morphology of the SSS is also evaluated postoperatively to assess whether normalization of intracranial structures occurs following reconstruction.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 20 computed tomography scans (10 preoperative, 6 postoperative, and 4 unaffected controls) obtained between 2001 and 2013. The SSS and the sagittal suture were outlined using Analyze imaging software. These data were used to measure

INTRODUCTION: Injury and subsequent thrombosis of the cerebral venous sinuses may be caused by closed head injuries secondary to a variety of different mechanisms. Skull fractures can lacerate or otherwise disrupt adjacent dural sinuses. The sequelae of such injuries may include thrombosis and either partial or total occlusion of the sinus, ultimately resulting in significant venous congestion. Sagittal sinus injury is associated with a more serious outcome due to the obligatory flow into the sinus, especially posterior to the coronal suture. In such cases, venous infarction may be a severe an

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are important, as CVST is potentially fatal. Pregnancy and puerperium are known risk factors for CVST. Here, we report the case of a patient who developed superior sagittal sinus thrombosis after a normal vaginal delivery. A 20-year-old woman presented with a headache and seizures two days after a normal vaginal delivery. Initially, brain computed tomography (CT) showed a subarachnoid hemorrhage in the right parietal lobe and sylvian fissure, together with mild cerebral edema. CT angiography revealed super

A case of superior sagittal sinus thrombosis after a closed head injury is presented along with a review of 11 other reported cases. Review of the literature indicates that this condition is rarely recognized and that further investigation is necessary to define the incidence, prognostic factors, and optimal therapy of this condition.

There is a wide variety of disorders associated with thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS), including infectious disease. noninfectious conditions such as vasculitis and hypercoagulable states, and complications arising from pregnancy or use of oral contraceptive medications. Despite these well-defined associations, approximately 25% of the cases remain idiopathic. In this article the authors describe a patient who was found to have SSS thrombosis while experiencing a thyrotoxic phase of Graves disease. The patient presented with intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, sei

A case of infection of the superior sagittal sinus with Petriellidium boydii is reported. This relatively common fungal pathogen rarely invades the central nervous system. Immunological compromise and poor personal hygiene seem to be common attributes shared by this patient and the 4 previous patients reported to have suffered invasion of the central nervous system by this organism. This report is unique in that it is the first demonstrating apparent hematogenous dissemination of this organism to the central nervous system.

The spectrum of clinical signs in cases of superior sagittal sinus thrombosis includes not only focal neurological deficits, seizures and mental disturbances, but also symptoms which may lead to a diagnosis of pseudotumour cerebri (PTC). In 14 cases of angiographically (or autopsy) proven thrombosis of the superior sagittal or both lateral sinuses, the "empty triangle" sign on contrast CT examination was the most reliable sign, suggesting the diagnosis in 70%. Indirect CT signs (venous infarcts) were observed in all 8 patients with focal neurological signs, but appeared rather delayed in 3 cas

Endovascular treatment for superior sagittal sinus (SSS) thrombosis is not always successful because of difficult access and long thrombus lesions. We report the first two cases of patients with acute cerebral venous sinus thrombosis at the SSS that was not recanalized by anticoagulation, mechanical thrombectomy, or thrombolysis, but was successfully treated by stent placement. Case 1 was a 37-year-old woman with bilateral subdural hematomas. Digital subtraction angiography showed obstruction of the sinus from the SSS to the right transverse sinus. Recanalization was achieved by selective thro

BACKGROUND: The superior sagittal sinus and the draining cerebral veins are often encountered during the surgery for parasagittal and falx meningiomas and during the interhemisperic transcallosal approaches. A knowledge about the variations from the normally described anatomy helps in anticipating and avoiding problems related to these structures during surgery.
AIM: The normal variations in the disposition of the superior sagittal sinus and the number and direction of the draining veins in the Indian population have been studied.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This is an anatomical study in the fresh

OBJECTIVE: Techniques for anterior interhemisperic craniotomy vary in respect to the degree of exposure of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). The aim of this anatomic study is to quantify the increase in the angle of view gained by wide exposure and retraction of the SSS.
METHODS: The anterior interhemispheric approach was performed in 10 cadaveric specimens with and without complete exposure and retraction of the SSS. Prespecified anatomic targets within the depth of the surgical field were used to calculate the angle of view.
RESULTS: Complete exposure of the SSS in the anterior interhemis

A newborn boy presented within the first day of life with moaning, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. The clinical syndrome resulted from thrombosis of the posterior part of the superior sagittal sinus due to impression at birth of the tip of the occipital squama. Both computed tomography and ultrasound scans were valuable noninvasive tools for documentation of the thrombus itself and the cerebral sequelae. Color Doppler ultrasound scan confirmed the absence and reappearance of flow in the superior sagittal sinus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of surgically treated dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF). The authors performed surgical removal of DAVF in 12 patients. The locations of DAVF were the transverse sigmoid sinus in seven patients and superior sagittal sinus in five patients. These 12 patients had undergone endovascular embolisation prior to removal. Among them, six patients were completely cured, according to angiography immediately after embolisation, but these six patients showed the recurrence of DAVF within 1 year. The other six patients showed a decrease of feeding vessels.

Parasagittal meningiomas (PSM) represent one of the most frequently encountered intracranial meningiomas and pose unique challenges given their intimate relationship with parasagittal bridging veins and superior sagittal sinus (SSS). Compromise of venous drainage during resection might be a source of significant postoperative complications including catastrophic intraparenchymal hemorrhage. Objective of this study was to identify postoperative complications and associated factors predisposing to their development. A retrospective review of histologically confirmed parasagittal meningiomas (Sin

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis affects the central nervous system in various ways but has not been reported to cause venous sinus thrombosis. In this case report, extensive calvarial tuberculosis caused compression and occlusion of the superior sagittal sinus in an adult man. Early diagnosis combined with surgical and medical treatment resulted in cure of the disease.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old man presented with a nonhealing sinus in the frontal area after a trivial injury without any neurological deficits or features of raised intracranial pressure. Magnetic resonance imaging scans showe
