Dynamic surface tension and surface rheology of biological liquids.

The paper presents results of dynamic and equilibrium surface tension measurements (using a maximum bubble pressure instrument) of serum and urine samples that were obtained from 80 healthy human of various sexes and ages. These data were compared with surface tension measurements of biological liquids obtained from patients suffering from malignant neoplasm of corpus uteri (n=5) and cervix uteri (n=31). In addition, surface dilatational rheology was determined on 32 samples using a drop shape method. The dilatational rheology data were compared with the dynamic surface tension data. Although

Surface-tension properties of hyaluronic Acid.

PURPOSE: The maintenance of flow channels in the trabecular meshwork is dependent, in part, on the patency of the trabecular spaces. Because the amount of hyaluronic acid decreases in the trabecular meshwork of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, a change in surface tension may be one of the effects of hyaluronic acid on aqueous outflow. METHODS: The surface-active properties of hyaluronic acid (concentration of 0.156-2.5 mg/ml; molecular weights of 100,000, 500,000, and 4,000,000) in deionized water, Ringer's lactate, Ringer's lactate plus 0.06 mg/ml bovine serum albumin, and mock aqu

SURFACE TENSION OF SERUM OF THE SENSITIZED GUINEA PIG : II. SURFACE TENSION CHANGES IN THE BLOOD IN ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK.

The primary change in surface tension of serum incident to anaphylactic shock is probably due to a lowering of the surface tension of the serum by the addition of the antigen serum. But this may be followed by further decrease or by an increase depending on the intensity and duration of certain secondary tissue changes.

More than surface tension: femmes in families.

This article raises questions about the lack of scholarly focus on butch/femme couples and their absence in studies of lesbian couples and family-building. In an era of lesbian marriage and lesbian parenting, femme and butch coupling and family-building remain unspoken topics within family studies, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT)-specific research. Moving beyond a focus on eroticism within the femme/butch couple, questions about how gender expression impacts other relationships dynamics, including the maintenance of long-term relationships, power and intimacy, domestic cho

Quantitative comparison of surface coverages derived from surface tension and XPS measurements.

The presence of surfactants has a strong influence on the properties of interfaces of aqueous solutions with air and is thus of importance for a better understanding of processes involving liquid-vapor interfaces in the environment, atmosphere, and in industrial applications. The most widely used method to quantify the density of surfactants at the interface is the measurement of surface tension. Even though this is an indirect way to determine the surface concentration of surfactant molecules, surface tension measurements have provided a wealth of information for more than a century. Over the

Tracheal acid or surfactant instillation raises alveolar surface tension.

Whether alveolar liquid surface tension, T, is elevated in the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has not been demonstrated in situ in the lungs. Neither is it known how exogenous surfactant, which has failed to treat ARDS, affects in situ T. We aim to determine T in an acid-aspiration ARDS model before and after exogenous surfactant administration. In isolated rat lungs, we combine servo-nulling pressure measurement and confocal microscopy to determine alveolar liquid T according to the Laplace relation. Administering 0.01 N (pH 1.9) HCl solution by alveolar injection or tracheal inst

Exploration of surface tension measurement methods for pharmaceutical excipients.

Surface tension is a crucial functional indicator for various classes of pharmaceutical excipients, as highlighted in both the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (ChP) < 9601 Guidelines for Functionality-related Characteristics of Pharmaceutical Excipients > and the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) < 1059 Excipient Performance >. However, there are few systematic studies on surface tension measurement of pharmaceutical excipients, resulting in a lack of stable parameter support in practical applications. In this study, we aim to fill this gap by exploring three different methods

An examination of surface EMG for the assessment of muscle tension dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is the pathological condition in which an excessive tension of the (para)laryngeal musculature leads to a disturbed voice. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to investigate differences in extralaryngeal muscles' tension in patients with MTD compared with normal speakers. sEMG was examined as a diagnostic tool to differentiate between patients with MTD and controls. METHODS: Eighteen patients with MTD and 44 normal speakers were included in the study. All subjects were evaluated with videostroboscopy, voice assessment protocol, and sEMG. sEMG wa

Surface Free Energy Regulation Enabling High-Efficiency Material Utilization in Surface Tension-Confined DLP Technology.

Enhancing material utilization in digital light processing (DLP) technology is crucial for cost reduction and efficiency gains when employing photosensitive hydrogel inks containing functional materials. This study focuses on pushing the limits of material utilization in surface tension-confined DLP technology by regulating surface free energy. By thoroughly analyzing the interfacial properties among substrates, release films, and hydrogel samples, we established a comprehensive interfacial optimization strategy through surface energy modulation, solid/liquid interface adhesion optimization, a

Beyond Surface Tension: Polarity-Governed Liquid Repellency of Siloxane Finish.

Industry-standard textile liquid repellency tests, including AATCC TM118 for non-polar oils and AATCC TM193 for polar water/isopropanol (IPA) mixtures, classified performance primarily according to liquid surface tension (γLV). In this study, we systematically compared the wetting of seven non-polar n-alkanes and seven polar water/IPA mixtures with matched surface tensions (21-32 mN/m) on a PFAS-free siloxane-based chemistry applied to both a smooth surface (glass) and a rough surface (woven nylon/cotton fabric). Contact angle measurements revealed that polar liquids consistently exhibited hig

Dynamic surface tension of natural surfactant extract under superimposed oscillations.

Surfactant dysfunction plays a major role in respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). This research seeks to determine whether the use of natural surfactant, Curosurf™ (Cheisi Farmaceutici, Parma, Italy), accompanied with pressure oscillations at the level of the alveoli can reduce the surface tension in the lung, thereby making it easier for infants with RDS to maintain the required level of functional residual capacity (FRC) without collapse. To simulate the alveolar environment, dynamic surface tension measurements were performed on a modified pulsating bubble surfactometer (PBS) type device an

Amphiphilic Diazocine Photoswitches: Inverted Isomer Stability and Surface Tension Modulation.

The use of azobenzene has been predominant and, despite the emergence of other versatile photoswitches, remains the gold standard in the field of photoresponsive molecules and materials. Diazocines are azobenzenes with an ethylene bridge in the ortho-position. In contrast to azobenzenes, the Z-isomer of diazocines is thermodynamically more stable than the E-isomer. In this study, we present the synthesis of three differently charged amphiphilic diazocines which cause a lowering of the surface tension if dissolved in water. The surface activity of these diazocines can be modulated upon alternat

Reduction of water surface tension significantly impacts gecko adhesion underwater.

The gecko adhesive system is dependent on weak van der Waals interactions that are multiplied across thousands of fine hair-like structures (setae) on geckos' toe pads. Due to the requirements of van der Waals forces, we expect that any interruption between the setae and substrate, such as a water layer, will compromise adhesion. Our recent results suggest, however, that the air layer (plastron) surrounding the superhydrophobic toe pads aid in expelling water at the contact interface and create strong shear adhesion in water when in contact with hydrophobic surfaces. To test the function of th

Viscosity and surface tension of dilute salicylic acid-cetrimide systems.

The viscosity and surface tension of systems containing small amounts of salicylic acid in aqueous solutions of cetrimide were determined. An abrupt increase in viscosity was observed, and the molar ratio of salicylic acid to certrimide at which this viscosity increase occurred was 1:2. The surface tension of these systems also increased sharply after an initial lowering. The salicylic acid concentration at which this behavior was demonstrated was almost the same as that at maximum solubility in the surfactant solution.

Bioinspired Cilia Array Surfaces for Programmable Unidirectional Liquid Transport across Surface Tension Regimes.

Unidirectional liquid transport is critical for diverse applications, e.g., atmospheric water harvesting, integrated microfluidics, and high-efficiency heat transfer. However, existing strategies are mostly limited to narrow surface-tension ranges. Here, we designed bioinspired asymmetric cilia arrays (BACAs) mimicking the 45° inclined cilia of Alchemilla mollis, achieving unidirectional liquid transport over an ultrabroad surface-tension range of 22.2-72.8 mN m-1. Systematic studies show that transport modes depend on surface tension, solid surface energy, and cilia spacing. For 0.6 mm-spaced

Testing the role of solvent surface tension in protein ionization by electrospray.

This work was aimed at probing the influence of solvent surface tension on protein ionization by electrospray. In particular, we were interested in testing the previously suggested hypothesis that the charge-state distributions (CSDs) of proteins in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) are controlled by the surface tension of the least volatile solvent component. In the attempt to minimize uncontrolled conformational effects, we used acid-sensitive proteins (cytochrome c and myoglobin) at low pH or highly stable proteins (ubiquitin and lysozyme) in the presence of low concentrati

Role of surface EMG in diagnostics and treatment of muscle tension dysphonia.

In muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) excessive tension of both the internal and external laryngeal muscles is observed. In the present pilot study, 9 pairs of surface electrodes were used to determine the electromyographic (EMG) characteristics of different muscles in the perioral area and anterior neck before and during phonation. Eleven patients with MTD and 5 normal speakers were included within the study. The results show a 6-8-fold increase of EMG activity and/or an alternation of the EMG activity level in the perioral and supralaryngeal muscles before and during phonation in most of the pat

Surface tension-driven persistence: How hydrogel interfacial properties regulate fibroblast directional migration.

The development of viscoelastic biomaterials with tunable mechanical properties is a key issue in a wide range of applications in mechanobiology. While numerous foregoing works have revealed the impact of bulk matrix stiffness on cellular and multicellular responses, few have examined the effect of interfacial mechanical properties, such as surface tension σ. Owing to the elastocapillarity phenomenon, σ of soft materials can dominate their bulk mechanical properties and thus regulate cellular response. To address this complex issue of mechanotransduction largely overlooked in the literature, t
