Does the type of surgical attire influence surgical site infection rates in intramedullary nailing for proximal femoral fractures? A retrospective analysis.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to examine whether there is an incidence difference on surgical site infections between surgeons using different surgical attire during intramedullary fixation for proximal femoral fractures. METHODS: 1,431 patients were included and divided into two groups; surgeons wearing balaclava- or skull caps (490 vs 941). The occurrence of surgical site infection was retrospectively assessed and divided into superficial- and deep wound infections. RESULTS: The occurrence of superficial wound infections did not differ significantly between the two groups, with three p

Patient Perceptions Across a Fixed Sequence of Physician Attire and Surgical-Context Images in Urology: An Image-Based Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Physician attire is associated with patient trust and confidence, yet it has rarely been examined in urology or in the surgical context in which the physician is seen. AIM: To examine how physician attire and the displayed surgical context are associated with patients' initial perceptions of urologists using standardized, artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 220 adult urological patients rated 10 standardized AI-generated physician images, presented in the same fixed order, using 11 5-point Likert items and one b

Steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns does not compromise resistance to wet microbial penetration.

BACKGROUND: Reuse of disposable medical products is common practice in veterinary medicine; however, studies on the safety of such reuse are often lacking. This study aimed to determine whether steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns compromises their resistance to wet microbial penetration. METHODS: Twenty surgical gowns were removed from their sterile packaging, manipulated, wetted, dried and subsequently repacked and steam sterilised. The protocol was performed once (groups A and C) or twice (groups B and D) for both spunbond/meltblown/meltblown/meltblown/spunbond (SMMMS) (groups

Surgical gowns as a safety barrier under non-standard environmental conditions.

In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate whether surgical gowns become contaminated during surgery. Samples from the gowns of five surgeons during 19 surgeries were collected using sterile swabs in circular standard delimited areas on both wrists and the mid-chest at three time-points: immediately before surgical incision (t=0), 30 min (t=30), and 60 min (t=60) later. Additionally, at t=0 and t=60, three settle plates of plate count agar were positioned at 1.5 m from the ground and remained open for 20 min. The operating room temperature and relative humidity were monitored. The swab

Environmental impact of single-use items and their contamination levels in elective orthopaedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Single-use items have dominated operating theatres since the 1980s, initially perceived to carry a lower risk of surgical site infection and occupational blood exposure while maintaining hospital expenditure. The topic of reusable surgical gowns and drapes has naturally emerged due to discussions regarding climate change. Considering reusable alternatives is the next step in reducing the carbon footprint of operating theatres. METHODS: Clinical waste attributable to single-use items was collected from 93 cases in an elective orthopaedic hospital over four weeks, comprising knee ar

Postoperative Infection Rates After Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Comparison With and Without the Use of a Surgical Helmet System.

Following total joint arthroplasty, surgical site infections (SSI) and periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are associated with increased patient morbidity and healthcare utilization. Current positive-pressure surgical sterile helmet system (SHS) were developed as a feasible, useful version of the body exhaust system. The use of SHS has not yet been proven to decrease infection rates in the orthopedic literature. The primary purpose of this study is to compare the infection rates between patients who underwent total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) with a surgical team wearing SHS versus without SHS.A

Neuraxial Anesthesia and the Use of Sterile Gowning.

Epidural or spinal anesthesia-related infections cause serious and devastating morbidity and mortality. The possible infectious complications of neuraxial anesthesia have become better understood in the past 10 years. We assessed information from published case series, studies, randomized controlled trials, and retrospective cohort studies to determine the rate of neuraxial infection and to evaluate iatrogenic causes of infection. The use of sterile gowning appears to be a factor associated with the decreased infection rates noted in some studies. A review of the literature demonstrated that p

Pandemic Operating Room Supply Shortage and Surgical Site Infection: Considerations as We Emerge from the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created shortages of operating room (OR) supplies, forcing healthcare systems to make concessions regarding "standard" OR attire. At our institution, we were required to reduce shoe covers, reuse face masks, and allow washable head coverings. We determined if these changes affected surgical site infection (SSI) rates. STUDY DESIGN: A single institutional study was performed to compare the SSI rates reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network in the 2 years preceding COVID-19 (PRE, January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2020) with t

Back to basics: preventing surgical site infections.

A surgical site infection (SSI) is an unintended and oftentimes preventable consequence of surgery. There is a significant amount of literature related to preventing SSIs, and it is up to practitioners in each care setting to review the evidence and work together to implement SSI prevention measures, such as nasal decolonization, antibiotic prophylaxis, preoperative showers, preoperative oxygen supplementation, and antimicrobial sutures. In addition, practitioners can follow several recommendations to reduce the risk of SSIs, including following proper hand hygiene practices; wearing clean, fa

Evaluation of body contouring surgery today: a 30-year perspective.

Concepts of beauty have been continuously evolving throughout the history of mankind. The voluptuous figures that were idealized by artists in the past have been substituted by slimmer forms. Medical advances in this century have permitted safe and efficient surgical correction of contour deformities. Until recently, these alterations were mostly hidden under heavy clothing or were accepted reluctantly. Current fashion trends generally promote body-revealing attire. The media frequently encourage the importance of fitness and good health, linking these qualities with youthfulness and beauty. T

Infection Control in Dental Anesthesiology: A Time for Preliminary Reconsideration of Current Practices.

Relegated to clinical afterthought, the topic of infection control has never taken center stage in our modern dental sedation and anesthesiology practices. Surgical and procedural masks, gloves, gowns, protective eyewear, and appropriate surgical attire have remained de rigueur in both fashion and custom for decades. However, the emergence of certain seminal events throughout health care history has driven mandated changes when practitioners, staff, patients, and the surrounding communities were exposed or put at risk of exposure to infectious disease. Hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus,

Engaging Perioperative Learners Using Online game-based Education.

Nurse educators may experience challenges (eg, distracted learners, inability to provide immediate feedback) when teaching in a classroom setting. Further, the perioperative workforce is multigenerational-younger staff members may have started using technology on a daily basis at a young age, so they may become distracted during traditional lectures and not retain important information. Online game-based learning (GBL) platforms are one technological solution that perioperative educators can use to maintain student engagement and foster learning. Educators at an academic medical center used an

Multimodal assessment of the prevention of surgical site infections in breast surgery in a French university hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring surgical site infections (SSIs) incidence through surveillance systems enables tailored infection prevention interventions. In our facility, annual surveillance of SSIs in breast surgeries revealed a significant increase of SSI incidence rates six times higher than the national average in France in 2024. This study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to the increase in SSIs following breast surgery at the South Hospital Group of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL), Pierre-Bénite, France. METHODS: The study was divided into three parts, all including breast sur

Pre-educational intervention survey of healthcare practitioners' compliance with infection prevention measures in cardiothoracic surgery: low compliance but internationally comparable surgical site infection rate.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are challenging problems leading to significant postoperative morbidity and mortality and may reflect the level of adherence to infection control policies. We used a structured observational method to collect data about infection control practices among surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, cardiopulmonary bypass technicians and orderlies practising in the cardiac operating theatre during open heart surgery at Mater Dei Hospital. To prevent bias, we did not disclose the actual procedures observed to the surgical team members, but participants knew they were being obs

Do Double-fan Surgical Helmet Systems Result in Less Gown-particle Contamination Than Single-fan Designs?

BACKGROUND: Surgical helmet systems commonly are stand-alone systems with a single fan blowing air into the suit, creating positive pressure that blows particles out through areas of low resistance, possibly contaminating surgical attire and the surgical field. Two-fan systems were developed more recently to release spent air, also theoretically lowering pressure in the suit and decreasing the aforementioned risk of particle contamination. To our knowledge no study to date has measured the potential differences in gown particle contamination to support this hypothesis. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We
