BACKGROUND: Over 600 operating room fires occur annually although many cases go unreported. Over 81% of operating room fires involve surgical drapes, yet limited data exist on the differing degrees of flammability of drapes and other surgical fuel sources in varying oxygen concentrations. The purpose of this study is to assess the flammability characteristics of fuels in the operating room under varying oxygen concentrations.
METHODS: Five fuel sources were analyzed in three levels of oxygen: 21%, 50%, and 100%. Three test samples of each material were burned in a manner similar to that estab

Plastic drapes are used prevent surgical site infections by enclosing bacteria within adhesive layers that directly contact the skin during surgery. However, these drapes often peel from the surgical edge, increasing the risk of surgical site infection. This problem has remained unresolved since the development of plastic drapes decades ago. Recently, a basic study using rat skin reported improvements in the structure of these drapes. This study indicated that drape detachment during skin incision can be suppressed by improving the flexibility of the drape base film. Furthermore, although the

Many patients experience unintended hypothermia in intraoperative processes. This randomized clinical trial aims to investigate the impact of surgical drapes on hypothermia during the intraoperative period. A randomized clinical trial was conducted from April 2019 to November 2020 in the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation/Operating Rooms at an education and research hospital. Out of 205 patients assessed for eligibility, 74 underwent elective abdominal surgery and were randomized into two groups: nonwoven surgical drapes and woven surgical drapes. The study had two stages: preoperati

This study evaluated the role of iodine-impregnated adhesive drapes to reduce surgical site infections and occurrences in open ventral hernia repairs. All patients undergoing open ventral hernia repair of clean wounds with a retromuscular repair using synthetic mesh by a single surgeon were prospectively evaluated from the American Hernia Society Quality Collaborative. Patients were divided into those that had an Ioban drape and those that did not. The primary endpoints of this study were postoperative surgical site occurrence and infections. One hundred and four patients met inclusion criteri

BACKGROUND: Operative microscopes are traditionally draped in single-use plastic to prevent infection theoretically. The necessity of this routine in breast free flap surgery is unclear. Alternatively, sterile wrapping of microscope handles would reduce operating room waste and provide a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach to sterility. This study aimed to determine whether the draping technique used during abdominally based free flaps (Ab-FF) influenced the rate of surgical site infections.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of Ab-FF performed consecutively

Vertical surgical sites or those on reclining patients often present a challenge when establishing and securing a sterile field. The drape or towel most proximal to the physician is often vertically oriented. The forces of gravity and movements of surgery can shift or detach this vertical drape. Sterile clamps are not always available or are needed for securing other instruments. We present a method to secure this vulnerable drape using a central fenestrated adherent drape.

BACKGROUND: The rate of surgical site infections (SSIs) has decreased in parallel to advances in sterilization techniques. Such infections increase morbidity and hospitalization costs. The use of iodine-impregnated sterile wound drapes (SWDs) is recommended to prevent or reduce the incidence of these infections. However, there is a paucity of data regarding their use in thoracic surgical procedures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of sterile wound drapes in the prevention of these infections and the effects on hospitalization costs.
METHODS: Perioperative iodine

Surgical procedures are commonly performed using mice but can have major effects on their core body temperature, including development of hypothermia. In this study, we evaluated active perioperative warming with and without surgical draping with adherent plastic wrap to refine practices, improve animal welfare, and optimize research experiments. Mice were randomized into treatment groups (n = 6; 8 CD1 mice per group). Treatments included placement within a small-animal forced-air incubator at 38 ° C for 30 min before surgery (Pre), after surgery (Post), or before and after surgery (Both). To

Intraoperative bacterial contamination may contribute to microbial transmission during joint arthroplasty, but its distribution across surgical devices and clinical significance remain uncertain. This study aimed to characterize intraoperative bacterial contamination, compare contamination-positive and contamination-negative patients, evaluate contamination across device types, and assess postoperative infection outcomes. This prospective cohort study included 127 patients undergoing primary joint arthroplasty between February 2016 and April 2017. Samples from an unused control blade, skin-inc

BACKGROUND: Surgical Site Infection (SSI) remains the most common cause of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HCAIs). In particular, contaminated and dirty abdominal wounds are attended by a high rate of SSI which in turn is associated with a huge burden on patients, caregivers and the entire health care system.
OBJECTIVE: To compare SSI rates following the use of iodine-impregnated adhesive incise drapes (Ioban) with routine conventional drapes in contaminated and dirty abdominal surgical wounds in a Nigerian tertiary hospital.
METHODOLOGY: Consecutive, consenting adult patients who underwen

BACKGROUND: Iodophor-impregnated adhesive incise drapes are widely used during surgeries for reducing surgical site contamination. There is little evidence to support the latter belief. This study evaluated the efficacy of iodophor-impregnated adhesive drapes for reducing bacterial contamination and counts at the incision site during hip surgery.
METHODS: In this prospective, randomized clinical trial, we enrolled 101 patients undergoing open joint preservation procedure of the hip. Half the patients had the adhesive drape applied to the skin prior to incision, while the remainder underwent t
