Improving Theatre Productivity by Digitising Surgical Equipment Repairs.

Introduction A few cancelled surgeries are due to surgical equipment issues representing a significant burden to both patients and National Health Service (NHS) hospitals on waiting lists. Despite this, there remain very few strategies designed to tackle these avoidable cancellations, especially in combination with digitisation. Our aim was to demonstrate improved efficiency through a pilot study in collaboration with Broomfield Hospital (Broomfield, United Kingdom), MediShout Ltd (London, United Kingdom), and B. Braun Medical Ltd (Sheffield, United Kingdom) with the digitalisation of the equi

Standardizing surgical equipment pick lists for sustainability: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical "pick lists" are compiled based on anticipated needs, without regular review. This leads to "overage"-supplies that are prepared but unused-with financial and environmental impacts. Standardization of lists is a strategy to reduce resource consumption and waste. This study collates the published impacts of pick list standardization initiatives on costs, outcomes, and provider satisfaction. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed in Medline, Embase, and Web of Science. RESULTS: The search identified 11 papers for inclusion. Most included surgeon educati

Recovery of Surgical Equipment Sterile Processing During a Floodwater Boil Advisory.

Excessive rainfall and dam failures resulted in floodwater contaminating our public water supply. The endotoxin risk in the contaminated water created challenges in recovery of sterile processing for our surgical equipment. Recovery plans should include a potable water source and a method to connect it to the required location. We share our solution of plumbing our sterile processing equipment to tanker-transported potable water sources. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2018; 12: 415-418).

Surgical treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis with liposuction equipment: risks and benefits.

Axillary hyperhidrosis poses a serious problem to the affected patients. So far, the conservative measures employed seem to be disappointing, operations with axillary skin excision, undermining and/or skin reconstruction may cause secondary functional and cosmetic problems, whereas botulinum A toxin injections need to be repeated frequently. The aim of this study was to establish the safety, efficacy, and durability of subdermal (subcorial) suction sweat gland curettage in the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis. So far, the method seems to be devoid of possible risks and drawbacks. In the las

[Qualitative improvement of the surgical treatment of cancer using laser equipment--surgical technic after photodynamic therapy].

Nineteen patients with lung cancer were treated by combined preoperative photodynamic therapy (PDT) and surgery. Preoperative photodynamic therapy was performed for the purpose of either reducing the extent of resection or increasing operability. Clinically, nine patients had stage I disease, one had stage II, eight had stage III and one had stage IV. There were two cases of tracheal superficial invasion from primary lesions, three cases of intrabronchial polypoid tumor or superficial invasion of the carina by primary lesions, eleven cases of polypoid tumor or superficial invasion of the main

Open intestinal anastomosis with surgical stapling equipment in 24 dogs and cats.

Surgical stapling equipment was used to perform open antiperistaltic side-to-side ("functional end-to-end") entero-anastomoses in 20 dogs and 4 cats. Twenty-one anastomoses healed uneventfully. Seven animals with severe bacterial peritonitis required open peritoneal drainage and delayed abdominal closure. There was postoperative leakage at the anastomotic site in two dogs and a localized abscess at the staple line in one cat. No long-term complications occurred in follow-up periods of 3 to 29 months.

A review of ten years' experience with surgical equipment in international health programs.

The Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO) began in June of 1973 with financial assistance from the Agency for International Development (AID). The purpose of the organization was to provide training and medical equipment to physicians in developing countries to update their education in reproductive health. JHPIEGO began by offering courses in the United States and shortly thereafter began training at centers in the developing countries themselves. Because of its important contributions to gynecological diagnosis in addition to its use in fert

The Second Battle: Equipping Austere Surgical Teams for Post-Resuscitation Coagulopathy.

For 2 decades, U.S. combat casualty care relied on rapid evacuation, effectively outsourcing late-stage coagulopathy management to resource-laden specialists at Role 3 facilities and above. As we pivot to Large-Scale Combat Operations (LSCO) and the realities of Prolonged Casualty Care (PCC), this paradigm is no longer reliable. Our Austere Resuscitative Surgical Care (ARSC) assets, such as Forward Resuscitative and Surgical Detachments (FRSDs), will hold critically ill casualties for 24 hours or longer, making them responsible for managing the predictable, hypofibrinogenemic dilutional coagul

Surgical management of severe obstetric hemorrhage: experience with an obstetric hemorrhage equipment tray.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage remains a leading cause of severe maternal morbidity and death. In addition to the appropriate use of oxytocic agents for uterine atony, surgical techniques, including uterine tamponade, major vessel ligation, compression sutures, and hysterectomy, may be required. On the rare occasions they are needed, the instruments and equipment required for these surgical techniques may not be readily available. OBJECTIVE: To record our experience with an obstetric hemorrhage equipment tray for surgical management of severe obstetric hemorrhage. METHODS: A severe obstetric hemorrh

Striking a balance: strategies for addressing single-use surgical equipment in infection prevention.

Single-use surgical equipment is a standard strategy to reduce the risk of pathogen transmission in the operative room. However, this practice is associated with a great environmental impact. Reusable surgical tools represent an opportunity to reduce this impact, with many studies showing a 50% or greater reduction in carbon emissions by switching to reusable alternatives. While the safety of reusable equipment depends on strict sterilization protocols, the risk of infection is minimal when guidelines are followed. To advance sustainability in healthcare, we must balance infection prevention p

Contrastive learning based method for X-ray and CT registration under surgical equipment occlusion.

Deep learning-based 3D/2D surgical navigation registration techniques achieved excellent results. However, these methods are limited by the occlusion of surgical equipment resulting in poor accuracy. We designed a contrastive learning method that treats occluded and unoccluded X-rays as positive samples, maximizing the similarity between the positive samples and reducing interference from occlusion. The designed registration model has Transformer's residual connection (ResTrans), which enhances the long-sequence mapping capability, combined with the contrast learning strategy, ResTrans can ada

Quantifying in vitro load-sharing in spinal fusion surgical constructs using strain sensor-equipped fixation rods and force sensor-equipped intervertebral cages.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Posterior and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF, TLIF) are widely recognized techniques for achieving spinal fusion. However, the biomechanical load-sharing interactions between the intervertebral cage, posterior instrumentation, and anatomical structures in the instrumented lumbar spine-particularly before and after cage subsidence and decompression procedures-remain insufficiently understood. PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify the load-sharing proportions of cages, rods, and anatomical structures in various spinal fusion configurations by comparing the load

An Experimental Analysis of Five Household Equipment-Based Methods for Decontamination and Reuse of Surgical Masks.

The current coronavirus pandemic has increased worldwide consumption of individual protective devices. Single-use surgical masks are one of the most used devices to prevent the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Nevertheless, the improper management of such protective equipment threatens our environment with a new form of plastic pollution. With the intention of contributing to a responsible policy of recycling, in the present work, five decontamination methods for used surgical masks that can be easily replicated with common household equipment are described. The decontamination procedures w

[Endoscopic, posterior transseptal pituitary surgery--learning curve of the surgical technique and equipment in 61 operations].

INTRODUCTION: The removal of hypophyseal tumor by transsphenoidal pituitary surgery using microsurgical instruments was first performed over 100 years ago. Operating techniques for this surgery are constantly being renewed, first by using a microscope and later on with the use of an endoscop. The authors provide an overview of the minimal invasive posterior transseptal-transsphenoidal aproach with the combined utilization of classical techniques with the assistance of the endoscop. METHOD: Sixty-one patients (33 female, 28 male, 21-84 yrs) were treated for sellar region tumor resection using

A Surgical Robotic System for Treatment of Pelvic Osteolysis Using an FBG-Equipped Continuum Manipulator and Flexible Instruments.

This paper presents the development and experimental evaluation of a redundant robotic system for the less-invasive treatment of osteolysis (bone degradation) behind the acetabular implant during total hip replacement revision surgery. The system comprises a rigid-link positioning robot and a Continuum Dexterous Manipulator (CDM) equipped with highly flexible debriding tools and a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)-based sensor. The robot and the continuum manipulator are controlled concurrently via an optimization-based framework using the Tip Position Estimation (TPE) from the FBG sensor as feedback.

Equipment malfunction in common hand surgical procedures. Complications associated with the pneumatic tourniquet and with the application of casts and splints.

Pneumatic tourniquets and plaster of Paris splints and casts are the hallmarks of hand surgery, firmly entrenched as an adjunct in the routine treatment of upper extremity disorders. Because they are usually employed with a comparative degree of safety and because they are relatively simple devices from a technologic perspective. Little is written about them in the scientific literature. In this paper we extensively review their historical developments, physiologic effects, and common complications, and we attempt to provide a rationale for their safe and effective use.
