BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate the rate of sustained virologic response (SVR) in chronic hepatitis C patients receiving antiviral treatment.
METHODS: The files of patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with interferon±ribavirin between 1995 and 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. Six months after the end of treatment, patients with negative hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA (<50 IU/mL, as determined by the polymerase chain reaction method) were enrolled in the study.
RESULTS: The mean age of 196 patients (89 males) was 46.13±11.10 years (range, 17 to 73 years). In biop

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects about 170 million people worldwide and is the most common chronic blood borne infection in the United States. Since the advent of blood screening protocols in the early 1990s, injection drug use has become the leading cause of infection. Hepatitis C can have both hepatic and nonhepatic manifestations of infection. Hepatic manifestations include hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure. The standard treatment for chronic HCV is combination therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha and ribavirin. Although pegylated interferon and ribavirin has be

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a higher prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection compared to the general population, and they also present higher morbidity and mortality if they are not treated. Current treatment is based on different direct-acting antiviral (DAA) schemes, which are available in the Mexican health system. However, the efficacy and safety of DAA treatment in patients with CKD on hemodialysis and HCV infection are unknown in Mexican population.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy through sustained viral response (SVR) and the safety of DAAs

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can de novo develop in patients with chronic hepatitis C even after the achievement of sustained virologic response (SVR). We characterized de novo HCC after SVR, comparing it with HCC that developed in patients during persistent hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Characteristics, survival rates, and recurrence rates after curative treatment in 178 patients who developed initial HCC after SVR diagnosed between 2014 and 2020 were compared with those of 127 patients with initial HCC that developed during persistent HCV infection diagnosed between 2011 and 2015; HCC

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We aimed to investigate the impact of sustained virologic response (SVR) to interferon (IFN)-free therapies on portal hypertension in patients with paired hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurements.
METHODS: One hundred and four patients with portal hypertension (HVPG ⩾6mmHg) who underwent HVPG and liver stiffness measurement before IFN-free therapy (baseline [BL]) were retrospectively studied. Among 100 patients who achieved SVR, 60 patients underwent HVPG and transient elastography (TE) after antiviral therapy (follow-up [FU]).
RESULTS: SVR to IFN-free therapie

Sustained virologic response at posttreatment Week 12 (SVR12) is the widely accepted efficacy endpoint for direct-acting antiviral agents. Those with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are presenting younger with milder liver disease, potentially reducing need for long-term liver posttreatment monitoring. This analysis aimed to determine the positive predictive value (PPV) of SVR at posttreatment Week 4 (SVR4) for achieving SVR12 in patients with HCV, without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis, receiving glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (G/P) in clinical trials. Hepatitis C, a single-stranded RNA virus officially discovered in 1989, is one of the most known viruses of the Flaviviridae family. Direct-acting antiviral drugs helped revolutionize the management of hepatitis C infection by guaranteeing higher cure rates. The medical field has strived to optimize the management of this disease, with recent reports proposing a shorter treatment duration to achieve the sustained virologic response (SVR). We present a case of a patient diagnosed with hepatitis C decompensated liver cirrhosis who achieved the SVR after only two weeks of treatment with sofosbuvi

AIM: To determine how sustained virological response at 12 wk (SVR12) with direct acting antivirals (DAAs) for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in patients aged ≥ 18 years treated for HCV with DAAs at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System from 2014-2016. The treatment group was compared to patients with HCV from 2011-2013 who did not undergo HCV treatment, prior to the introduction of DAAs; the control group was matched to the study group in terms of age, gender, and ethn

IMPORTANCE: Some payers and clinicians require alcohol abstinence to receive direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether alcohol use at DAA treatment initiation is associated with decreased likelihood of sustained virologic response (SVR).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used electronic health records from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the largest integrated national health care system that provides unrestricted access to HCV treatment. Participants included all patients b

The complete eradication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) from both hepatic and extrahepatic compartments following successful direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy remains an area of ongoing investigation. This study aimed to detect HCV RNA signals in serum and tissue samples from 40 patients who had achieved a sustained virologic response (SVR). Paired serum samples (pre-treatment and post-SVR) were analyzed concurrently with liver, gallbladder, bile, pancreatic, and splenic tissues. These tissue samples were obtained during clinically indicated surgical procedures performed 4-12 weeks after SVR.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies achieving sustained virologic response (SVR) rates exceeding 95%, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk persists in cured hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients, particularly those with advanced fibrosis or concurrent metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This clinical paradox implies that HCV induces durable oncogenic molecular alterations independent of active viral replication, fundamentally challenging the notion that virologic cure equates to biological liver cure. This review aims to delineate t

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Despite effective antiviral therapies, the risk for HCC is decreased but not eliminated after a sustained virologic response (SVR) to direct-acting antiviral (DAA) agents, and the risk is higher in patients with advanced fibrosis. We investigated HCV-induced epigenetic alterations that might affect risk for HCC after DAA treatment in patients and mice with humanized livers.
METHODS: We performed genome-wide ChIPmentation-based ChIP-Seq and RNA-seq analyses of liver tiss

BACKGROUND: In recent years the management of hepatitis C virus infection and the possibility of its eradication have been researched due to the importance that they represent in the health of the world population. Obtaining data that help to cope with this pathology improves the quality of life of those affected by it. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of direct-acting antiviral therapies provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Health in accordance to the Clinical Protocol and Therapeutic Guidelines of 2015.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the epidemiological profile of patients with chroni

Due to complex interplay between host and viral factors, pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is considered a challenging issue. Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is not confined only to liver but can induce disturbances in many other organs and systems. Our primary aim for this study was to evaluate biological response rates and sustained virological response (SVR) in patients diagnosed with CHC, treated with Interferon-alpha (IFN-α), Pegylated (PEG)-IFN-α2a or -α2b plus Ribavirin. The second aim of the study was the identification of predictive factors for a favorable response to a

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence in patients with chronic hepatitis C (HCV) who achieved a sustained virological response (SVR) after direct acting antivirals (DAAs) remains challenging.
METHODS: Among HCC-free HCV patients with advanced fibrosis enrolled in the ANRS CO22 HEPATHER cohort who achieved SVR 12 weeks after treatment with DAAs, HCC predictive models were developed using Cox multivariable regression. The derived score was externally validated in a large Egyptian cohort. Our main outcome was the HCC-free survival.
RESULTS: During follow-up

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Widespread use of direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C virus infection has been paralleled with increased numbers of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after achieving sustained virologic response (post-SVR HCC) worldwide. Few data compare regional differences in the presentation and prognosis of patients with post-SVR HCC.
METHODS: We identified patients with advanced fibrosis (F3/F4) who developed incident post-SVR HCC between March 2015 and October 2021 from 30 sites in Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and Southe

BACKGROUND: Data are limited regarding the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection after treatment-induced sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients on haemodialysis.
AIMS: To assess the risk of HCV reinfection among patients on haemodialysis with treatment-induced SVR.
METHODS: Patients on haemodialysis patients who achieved SVR12 with interferon (IFN) or direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-based treatment received follow-up at SVR24 and then biannually with HCV RNA measurements. HCV reinfection was defined as the resurgence of viremia by different viral strains beyond SVR12 . The low-ri
