Scapholunate instability can be treated by stabilizing the scaphoid with the dorsal wrist capsule, which acts as a tether to control palmar rotation. We began using suture anchors instead of pull-out wires to secure the dorsal capsule to the scaphoid. Thirty-eight patients were treated with this method, and 35 were followed an average of 24 months. Sixteen were pain free, 12 had pain with activity, and 7 required additional surgical treatment. Patients regained 85% of expected grip strength, with 25 of the 35 returning to their preinjury job. The scapholunate gap, reduced at the time of surger

BACKGROUND: A rupture of the distal biceps tendon is the most common tendon rupture of the elbow and has received increased attention in the past few years. Newly developed all-suture anchors have the potential to minimize surgical trauma and the risk of adverse events because of the use of flexible drills and smaller drill diameters.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to biomechanically compare all-suture anchors and titanium suture anchors for distal biceps tendon repair in cadaveric specimens. The hypothesis was that all-suture anchors would show no differences in load to failure or displ

Traumatic quadriceps tendon ruptures are devastating injuries that hinder knee extension and drastically affect lower extremity function. In complete ruptures resulting in full extensor mechanism disruption, early diagnosis and surgical intervention are key to avoid tendon retraction, restore function, and limit morbidity and disability. Surgical management in the acute setting consists of direct repair with transosseous bone tunnels or suture anchors. Advantages of suture anchor repair include decreased operative time as well as the employment of smaller incisions. Additionally, studies have

BACKGROUND: Several types of suture anchors, which differ in their working principles, are available for fixation of ligamentous structures in knee surgery. How the choice of a suture anchor type influences the biomechanical stability of ligament fixation is largely unknown.
PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical properties of different suture anchor designs regarding primary stability for tendon fixation and repair in medial collateral ligament (MCL) surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: The primary stability of MCL fixation was assessed in a porcine model utilizing 1

Symptomatic anterior glenohumeral instability secondary to a Bankart lesion may require surgical reconstruction and repair of labral pathology. In this report, a Bankart repair was performed using metallic suture anchors. An infection developed around the anchors necessitating their removal. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an infection associated with a suture anchor device.

The recent development of small bone suture anchors has created potential applications in reconstructive surgery of the hand and wrist. A combined laboratory and clinical study was devised to evaluate their use. 16 paired fingers (32 in all) from eight cadaveric hands were disarticulated at the MP joint with a 10 cm tail of FDP tendon. The FDP insertion was released in all specimens. In 16 fingers reinsertion was performed with the classic Bunnell technique; in the paired 16 fingers, the repair utilized Acufex 2 mm anchors. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding l

PURPOSE: Suture anchors are used consistently for repairs of soft tissues, especially around the glenohumeral joint. These anchors can be used either arthroscopically or in an open procedure to anatomically restore the labrum and capsular tissues to the glenoid after avulsion injuries (Bankart lesion). The purpose of this study was to analyze the pullout strength of a new knotless suture anchor (Mitek Knotless Suture Anchor; Mitek, Norwood, MA) compared with 2 commercially available suture anchors that require knots to be tied (Mitek Panalok 3.5-mm Anchor and Mitek GII Quick Anchor).

BACKGROUND: Posterior medial meniscus root (PMMR) tears (PMMRTs) can be repaired using various techniques to promote healing. However, the biomechanical properties of suture-relay all-suture anchor (ASA) versus conventional suture anchor (CSA) and loop-locking transtibial pullout (TTP) have not been well established.
PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical properties of PMMR repairs using suture-relay ASA, CSA, and loop-locking TTP.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: A total of 33 fresh-frozen porcine knee joints with intact medial menisci were randomly divided into 3 groups,

PURPOSE: Suture anchors are commonly used to repair rotator cuff tendons in arthroscopy surgery, and several anchor materials have been created to maximize pull-out strength and minimize iatrogenic damage. We hypothesized that all-suture anchors have biomechanical properties equivalent to those of conventional anchors. Our purpose is to compare the biomechanical properties of different anchors used for rotator cuff repair.
METHODS: The Embase, PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were searched for biomechanical studies on various suture anchors. The search keywords included rotator cuff tea

INTRODUCTION: Patella fracture can occur due to direct injury to the knee or indirect eccentric contraction of the quadriceps tendon. These injuries can present in different configurations which require acceptable reduction and good fixation. Patients are at risk of not only losing their knee extensor mechanism but also having a defective patellofemoral articulation. Hence, the main aim in treating such fractures is to restore the knee extensor mechanism. Surgical options for treating patella fracture include tension band wiring, wiring through cannulated screws, fixation with plate, and sutur

Treatment of type II periprosthetic patellar fractures presents difficulties in decision-making particularly when displacement is greater than 10 mm. Poor results have been reported with internal fixation, whereas conservative management has been associated with a high incidence of extensor lag. This article reports a patient with a displaced type II patellar fracture following total knee arthroplasty. One month after undergoing total knee arthroplasty, a 72-year-old man presented to the emergency department with difficulty walking. Physical examination revealed an extensor lag with a palpable

Arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs using titanium-alloy suture anchors are a new treatment option for active patients with shoulder injuries. Shoulder arthroscopy and arthroscopic repair procedures are alternative treatments to traditional open surgical procedures for Bankart lesions and rotator cuff tears. Distinct advantages of arthroscopic repair techniques include decreased patient tissue trauma and morbidity rates and shortened recovery and rehabilitation periods.

PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical performance of knotless versus knotted all-suture anchors for the repair of type II SLAP lesions with a simulated peel-back mechanism.
METHODS: Twenty paired cadaveric shoulders were used. A standardized type II SLAP repair was performed using knotless (group A) or knotted (group B) all-suture anchors. The long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon was loaded in a posterior direction to simulate the peel-back mechanism. Cyclic loading was performed followed by load-to-failure testing. Stiffness, load at 1 and 2 mm of displacement, load to repair failure, load t

Injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint is commonly encountered in clinical practice, particularly among athletes. Although repair using suture anchors is currently the gold standard, recent evidence suggests suture tape augmentation offers superior initial construct strength, allowing for earlier mobilization. This technical note describes a reproducible technique for thumb ulnar collateral ligament repair using suture tape augmentation. The procedure involves primary repair with a 1.3-mm Suturetape (Arthrex, Naples, FL) followed by internal bracing usin

The development of the suture anchor has played a pivotal role in the transition from open to arthroscopic techniques of the shoulder. Various suture anchors have been manufactured that help facilitate the ability to create a soft tissue to bone repair. Because of reported complications of loosening, migration, and chondral injury with metallic anchors, bioabsorbable anchors have become increasingly used among orthopaedic surgeons. In this review, the authors sought to evaluate complications associated with bioabsorbable anchors in or about the shoulder and understand these in the context of t

Anterior glenoid fractures associated with glenohumeral instability are normally treated with open fixation of the fragment. However, recent technical development enables this procedure to be performed under arthroscopic control using screws or even suture anchors if the fragment is small enough. We developed a unique method of stabilizing a larger fragment with suture anchors and the use of a clear imaging method of three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) with the humeral head eliminated, preoperatively and postoperatively. In the present article, we report a detailed method of arthrosc

We compared the pullout strength of a suture-based anchor versus a bioabsorbable anchor in the distal fibula and calcaneus and evaluated the relationship between bone mineral density and peak load to failure. Eight paired cadaveric specimens underwent a modified Broström procedure and Achilles tendon reattachment. The fibula and calcaneus in the paired specimens received either a suture-based anchor or a bioabsorbable suture anchor. The fibular and calcaneal specimens were loaded to failure, defined as a substantial decrease in the applied load or pullout from the bone. In the fibula, the peak
