Female pseudohermaphrodite polar bears at Svalbard.

During research on polar bears (Ursus maritimus) at Svalbard in April 1996, we captured two yearlings with a normal vaginal opening and a 20 mm penis containing a baculum. The penis was located caudal to the location in a normal male and was concealed within the vaginal opening by a single pair of labia. The urethral opening was situated laterally about 5 mm from the distal end of the penis. Neither of the yearlings showed signs of a Y chromosome, so both bears were regarded as female pseudohermaphrodites. On separate occasions in two bears, we recorded aberrant genitalia morphology with a hig

Seasonal iron overload in Svalbard reindeer liver.

Changes in liver iron concentration in relation to seasonal body weight variations and food iron intake have been investigated in 77 Svalbard reindeer by chemical and histological methods. During the winter season the body weight decreased about 43% in females and 39% in males. Liver weight was reduced about 65% in both sexes. The liver iron concentration showed little or no difference between the sexes and was 29 +/- 13 mg iron/100 g wet weight in the autumn. The concentration increased in late winter to 291 +/- 52 mg iron/100 g in animals eating iron-rich forage plants, and to 165 +/- 92 mg

Rabies in the arctic fox population, Svalbard, Norway.

Arctic foxes, 620 that were trapped and 22 found dead on Svalbard, Norway (1996-2004), as well as 10 foxes trapped in Nenets, North-West Russia (1999), were tested for rabies virus antigen in brain tissue by standard direct fluorescent antibody test. Rabies antigen was found in two foxes from Svalbard and in three from Russia. Blood samples from 515 of the fox carcasses were screened for rabies antibodies with negative result. Our results, together with a previous screening (1980-1989, n=817) indicate that the prevalence of rabies in Svalbard has remained low or that the virus has not been enz

Distribution of sedimentary mercury off Svalbard, European Arctic.

The European Arctic, including the Svalbard archipelago, receives mercury loads due to long range atmospheric transport, local contamination, melting of glaciers and as a result of bedrock weathering. Few studies have been devoted to the contamination history and sources of sedimentary mercury in the Svalbard area. This knowledge gap is addressed in this study. Concentrations of total mercury (10-80ng/g), fractions of mercury differing with affinity to the sediment matrix (88-97% refractory, 3-12% mobile), organic and methyl mercury (100-500pg/g) were measured in surface and subsurface sedimen

Seasonal siderosis in female eider nesting in Svalbard.

Specimens of female and male eider (Somateria mollissima) were collected in Svalbard. Atomic absorption analyses revealed mean hepatic iron concentrations of 280 micrograms per g wet weight 2 to 3 weeks before egg laying, 2620 micrograms per g after 2 to 3 weeks brooding and 800 micrograms per g 2 weeks after hatching. At the highest concentration, there was massive siderosis with the iron located in both parenchymal and non-parenchymal cells. No signs of liver injury were seen. The female eider fasts completely from the start of egg laying to the end of hatching. The non-parenchymal iron depo

Photochemical evolution of atmospheric brown carbon in Arctic Svalbard.

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a light-absorbing organic aerosol that contributes to positive radiative forcing. BrC evolves substantially with atmospheric photochemistry, which remains poorly understood in the rapidly warming Arctic, leading to uncertainties in assessing BrC radiative forcing. In this study, we characterize the photochemical evolution of BrC subgroups by measuring optical absorption and fluorescence of methanol-soluble BrC (MeS-BrC) and water-soluble BrC (WS-BrC) in Arctic Svalbard from May 2022 to April 2023. Parallel factor analysis identified one fluorescent humic-like

Pathogen Exposure in White Whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Svalbard, Norway.

The Svalbard white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) population is one of the smallest in the world, making it particularly vulnerable to challenges such as climate change and pathogens. In this study, serum samples from live captured (2001−2016) white whales from this region were investigated for influenza A virus (IAV) antibodies (Abs) (n = 27) and RNA (n = 25); morbillivirus (MV) Abs (n = 3) and RNA (n = 25); Brucella spp. Abs; and Toxoplasma gondii Abs (n = 27). IAV Abs were found in a single adult male that was captured in Van Mijenfjorden in 2001, although no IAV RNA was detected. Brucella s

Ambient temperature effects on stress-induced hyperthermia in Svalbard ptarmigan.

Stress-induced hyperthermia (SIH) is commonly observed during handling in homeotherms. However, in birds, handling in cold environments typically elicits hypothermia. It is unclear whether this indicates that SIH is differently regulated in this taxon or if it is due to size, because body temperature changes during handling in low temperatures have only been measured in small birds <0.03 kg (that are more likely to suffer high heat loss when handled). We have therefore studied thermal responses to handling stress in the intermediate-sized (0.5-1.0 kg) Svalbard ptarmigan (Lagopus muta hyperbore

Serum chemistry of free-ranging white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Svalbard.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal physiological conditions and diseases can change the concentrations of enzymes, metabolites, and minerals in the body. Serum chemistry information may thus be indicative of a specific disease; interpretation of such information requires knowledge of serum chemistry reference intervals from a seemingly healthy population of the species. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to obtain serum chemistry reference intervals for a population of white whales. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 21 free-ranging white whales (beluga; Delphinapterus leucas). The whales were l

Serologic survey for selected virus infections in polar bears at Svalbard.

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) were chemically immobilized and sampled at Svalbard, Norway, and on the pack ice in the Barents Sea from late March to mid-May between 1990 and 1998. Plasma samples were tested for the presence of antibodies to canine distemper virus (CDV), calicivirus, phocid herpesvirus type 1 (PhHV-1), and rabies virus. A seroprevalence of 8% to CDV and 2% to calicivirus were found, whereas no antibodies were detected against PhHV-1 or rabies virus. This serologic survey indicates that polar bears in this region are exposed to morbillivirus and calicivirus, although the nature

The prevalence of Trichinella sp. in Arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) in Svalbard.

The prevalence of Trichinella sp. in arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) from Svalbard was studied from 1983 to 1989. Diaphragms of 697 foxes were examined for larvae; 59 foxes (8.5%) were infected. The prevalence of Trichinella sp. increased from 4% in juveniles to 36% in foxes aged more than 6 years of age. There were no significant correlations when condition and body weight each were correlated to the occurrence and number of larvae of Trichinella sp. More foxes were infected in the northern than in the central part of Svalbard. There were only minor differences in prevalence among years.

Coastal lake sediments from Arctic Svalbard suggest colder summers are stormier.

The Arctic is rapidly losing its sea ice cover while the region warms faster than anywhere else on Earth. As larger areas become ice-free for longer, winds strengthen and interact more with open waters. Ensuing higher waves also increase coastal erosion and flooding, threatening communities and releasing permafrost carbon. However, the future trajectory of these changes remains poorly understood as instrumental observations and geological archives remain rare and short. Here, we address this critical knowledge gap by presenting a continuous Holocene-length reconstruction of Arctic eolian activ

Phylogenetic comparison of rabies viruses from disease outbreaks on the Svalbard Islands.

Periodic wildlife rabies epizootics occur in Arctic regions. The original sources of these outbreaks are rarely identified. In 1980, a wildlife epizootic of rabies occurred on the previously rabies-free Svalbard Islands, Norway. After this outbreak of rabies in the arctic fox population (Alopex lagopus), only single cases have been reported from the Islands over the following two decades. Phylogenetic characterization of four viruses isolated from infected arctic foxes from Svalbard from three different time periods suggest that the source of these epizootics could have been migration of this

Elevated graminoid cover co-occurs with Ascomycota-dominated soils in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.

Arctic warming has coincided with dramatic changes in plant cover, but the impact that aboveground biomass shifts have on soil microbial communities and processes remains poorly understood. To address this, we investigated spatial patterns of soil microbes in relation to vegetation changes using a space-for-time approach in the high Arctic region of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. We collected and characterized 31 topsoil samples from three sites that differed in nutrient input, CO2 flux, soil chemistry, and plant cover. Pronounced vegetation differences were observed at fine spatial scales, including

Single-particle characterization of summertime arctic aerosols collected at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard.

Single-particle characterization of summertime Arctic aerosols is useful to understand the impact of air pollutants on the polar atmosphere. In the present study, a quantitative single particle analytical technique, low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis, was used to characterize 8100 individual particles overall in 16 sets of aerosol samples collected at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Norway on 25-31 July, 2007. Based on their X-ray spectral and secondary electron image data of individual particles, 13 particle types were identified, in which particles of marine origin were the most abundan

Brucella sp. antibodies in polar bears from Svalbard and the Barents Sea.

A prevalence of 5.4% of anti-Brucella sp. antibodies was found in plasma samples from 297 polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from Svalbard and the Barents Sea. Plasma was tested by the classical brucellosis tests Slow Agglutination of Wright (SAW), EDTA modified SAW and Rose Bengal test, as well as by an indirect Protein A ELISA. Only samples classified as positive in all tests were regarded as containing anti-Brucella sp. antibodies. A significant west to east increase in the proportion of bears with anti-Brucella sp. antibodies was found, with 3.6% (n = 253) at Svalbard (Spitsbergen, Nordaustland

Tracing emerging contaminants in the Arctic cryosphere: Insights from Spitsbergen (Svalbard Archipelago).

The Arctic cryosphere, recognised as a reservoir for pollutants, faces the risk of becoming a secondary source of pollution due to climate-driven thawing and glacial melt. This study presents new data on concentrations and deposition fluxes of contaminants of emerging Arctic concern, specifically phenolic endocrine-disrupting compounds (PEDCs, e.g. bisphenol A and nonylphenols) and 17 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs, including antibiotics, analgesics, hormones, and insect repellents). The samples were collected from snow and shallow ice cores from three glaciers in Svalbard d

Metagenomic Composition Analysis of an Ancient Sequenced Polar Bear Jawbone from Svalbard.

The sequencing of ancient DNA samples provides a novel way to find, characterize, and distinguish exogenous genomes of endogenous targets. After sequencing, computational composition analysis enables filtering of undesired sources in the focal organism, with the purpose of improving the quality of assemblies and subsequent data analysis. More importantly, such analysis allows extinct and extant species to be identified without requiring a specific or new sequencing run. However, the identification of exogenous organisms is a complex task, given the nature and degradation of the samples, and th
