Comparisons of eccrine sweat gland anatomy in genetic, chromosomal, and other diseases, and a suggested procedure for use of sweat gland measurements in differential diagnosis.

Statistical analysis of the dimensions of microdissected eccrine sweat glands (duct length, coil volume, ratio of coil volume to duct length, and axis ratio of coil) was performed for several diseases (cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, tetralogy of Fallot, chronic renal disease, and trisomies 13, 18, and 21) using both individual and grouped age-matched control patients. Duct length, coil volume, and the ratio of the two all rise with age. Eccrine gland duct length was found to be significantly large in tetralogy of Fallot and Werdnig-Hoffmann disease and small in chro

Wilson protein expression, copper excretion and sweat production in sweat glands of Wilson disease patients and controls.

BACKGROUND: In Wilson disease, copper is not sufficiently excreted into bile due to the absence or malfunction of the Wilson protein copper ATPase in the excretory pathway of hepatocytes. Copper is found in sweat. It is unknown if the Wilson protein plays a role in copper excretion into sweat. It is the aim of this study to investigate Wilson protein expression in sweat glands and analysing its effects on copper excretion into sweat in controls and patients with Wilson disease. METHODS: Immunofluorescent analysis of the Wilson protein in skin samples from normal rat, LEC rat and human skin bi

Eccrine sweat gland carcinoma of the scrotum with associated extramammary Paget's disease.

Sweat gland carcinomas are rare tumors which have not previously been reported as arising from the scrotum. We present the first known case of primary eccrine sweat gland carcinoma of the scrotum in association with extramammary Paget's disease (EPD) and review the presentation and management of these tumors. Sweat gland carcinomas frequently coexist with EPD and this association provides insight into the histogenesis of EPD, which is presently unknown. Sweat gland carcinoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous scrotal tumors and carefully ruled out pathologically if t

Quantification of sweat gland innervation in patients with Fabry disease: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrosis and heat intolerance, frequently reported by men and women with Fabry disease (FD), is thought to be related not only to the deposition of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) in eccrine sweat glands, but also to reduced sweat gland sympathetic innervation. METHODS: We performed a case-control study to compare the density of sweat gland innervation between patients with FD and healthy controls by examining lower leg skin punch biopsies. We used a standardized grid of circles superimposed upon the immunofluorescent specimen to create a simple pattern of circles over the sweat

Extramammary Paget's disease. Arising in knee region in association with sweat gland carcinoma.

We report a case of extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) arising in the knee region in association with an underlying sweat gland carcinoma. Inguinal lymph node metastases were present initially. Paget's cells, intradermal tumor cells, and metastatic tumor cells showed similar reactions to a variety of histochemical stains and positive results with immunohistochemical staining using carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Control sections in cases of Bowen's disease and superficial, spreading malignant melanoma showed a negative staining reaction with CEA, providing further evidence that this technique

Bowen disease with invasive mucin-secreting sweat gland differentiation: Report of a case and review of the literature.

Bowen disease (BD) with divergent adnexal differentiation is a rare composite cutaneous tumor featuring different phenotypic elements. Sebaceous, poroid and trichilemmal invasive components have been described in this setting and very infrequent reports of mucinous glandular differentiation are extant. Clinically, these tumors are not sufficiently distinctive to enable recognition without histopathological evaluation. From a microscopic perspective, care must be taken to exclude a collision tumor as well as other combined cutaneous neoplasms featuring squamous and glandular differentiation. Di

Diagnostic utility of direct immunofluorescence findings around hair follicles and sweat glands in immunobullous disease.

BACKGROUND: Inherent to some immunobullous disorders is potential for intraepidermal or dermal-epidermal junction fragility, a phenomenon that may compromise biopsy specimen integrity and direct immunofluorescence (DIF) interpretation. In these situations, cutaneous adnexal structures (e.g. hair follicles, sweat apparatus) usually remain intact. Whether periadnexal DIF findings are reliable in diagnosing immunobullous conditions is unknown. METHODS: We evaluated 56 cutaneous specimens with diagnostic immunoglobulin (Ig) deposition patterns that contained adnexal structures. In a corollary stu

Fox-Fordyce disease in two prepubertal girls: histopathologic demonstration of eccrine sweat gland involvement.

This report presents two prepubertal girls with Fox-Fordyce disease. The pruritic papules extensively affected the areas where apocrine glands are distributed (axillae, periareolar and intermammary zones, pubes, infraumbilical midline), and also extended to the neck and face near the external angle of the eyes in one child. Analyses of several biopsy specimens showed that the main lesion was a spongiotic vesicle containing inflammatory cells and keratinocytes affecting the hair infundibula and acrosyringia, together, with hyperkeratosis of both adnexa. The cause of the disease remains elusive,

Electrodermal signal analysis using continuous wavelet transform as a tool for quantification of sweat gland activity in diabetic kidney disease.

Sympathetic innervation of the sweat gland (SG) manifests itself electrically as electrodermal activity (EDA), which can be utilized to measure sudomotor function. Since SG exhibits similarities in structure and function with kidneys, quantification of SG activity is attempted through EDA signals. A methodology is developed with electrical stimulation, sampling frequency and signal processing algorithm. One hundred twenty volunteers participated in this study belonging to controls, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic neuropathy. The magnitude and time duration of stimuli is arrived by

Proteomic Landscape of Sweat Glands in Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease Reveals a Pathogenic Triad of Abnormal Autophagy, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, and a Failed Oxidative Stress Response.

Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease (NIID), caused by GGC repeat expansions in the NOTCH2NLC gene, has a poorly understood molecular pathogenesis. This study aimed to systematically delineate the molecular pathology of NIID for the first time by employing an unbiased proteomic approach in sweat gland tissue. We isolated sweat gland tissue from 20 NIID patients and 6 healthy controls via Laser Capture Microdissection and performed in-depth proteomic analysis using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry, followed by functional annotation and mechanistic prediction through bioinformat

Axillary masses as clinical manifestations of male sweat gland carcinoma associated with extramammary Paget's disease and accessory breast carcinoma: two cases report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Male cases of accessory breast carcinoma and sweat gland carcinoma associated with extramammary Paget's disease of the axilla are uncommon. In clinical diagnosis and treatment, it is necessary to determine the disease carefully and make a reasonable treatment strategy according to the patient's situation. CASE PRESENTATION: We described two male cases of the special tumor with an axillary mass as the first clinical symptom, one of which was diagnosed as accessory breast cancer and the other as sweat gland cancer associated with extramammary Paget's disease. Sweat, the driving force behind normal skin: an emerging perspective on functional biology and regulatory mechanisms.

The various symptoms associated with excessive or insufficient perspiration can significantly reduce a patient's quality of life. If a versatile and minimally invasive method could be established for returning sweat activity to normalcy, there is no question that it could be used in the treatment of many diseases that are believed to involve perspiration. For this reason, based on an understanding of the sweat-gland control function and sweat activity, it was necessary to conduct a comprehensive search for the factors that control sweating, such as the central and peripheral nerves that contro
