Immunohistochemical demonstration of ferritin in sweat gland and sweat gland neoplasms.

Using a rabbit anti-human liver ferritin antibody, we examined the binding patterns of this reagent in normal skin and observed a unique binding pattern limited to the outermost layer of the eccrine duct. Examination of a variety of sweat gland neoplasms revealed 2 distinct patterns. One was the binding of this antibody to the outermost layer of cells in the epithelial cords of syringoma, producing a characteristic ring when seen in cross-section. This pattern of binding did not occur in other neoplasms known to be related to the eccrine duct such as dermal duct tumor and eccrine poroma. Only

Topics in histopathology of sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms.

This article reviews several topics regarding sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms. First, the clinicopathological characteristics of poroid neoplasms are summarized. It was recently reported that one-fourth of poroid neoplasms are composite tumors and one-fourth are apocrine type lesions. Recent progress in the immunohistochemical diagnosis of sweat gland neoplasms is also reviewed. CD117 can help to distinguish sweat gland or sebaceous tumors from other non-Merkel cell epithelial tumors of the skin. For immunohistochemical differential diagnosis between sweat gland carcinoma (SGC) other than

Pigmented Syringomatous Carcinoma/Sweat Gland Carcinoma of the Vulva With Melanocytic Colonization: An Uncommon Presentation of a Rare Sweat Gland Neoplasm.

Primary vulvar carcinomas are rare and constitute a diverse group of neoplasms. These primary tumors are typically classified based on their presumed tissue of origin or histological characteristics. Among these, carcinomas of sweat gland origin are particularly significant. They closely resemble similar malignancies in nonvulvar skin, including various cutaneous adnexal-type cancers such as apocrine and eccrine adenocarcinomas. Syringomatous carcinoma of the vulva is a rare malignant sweat gland neoplasm known for its infiltrative growth and tendency for local recurrence. Typically, these mal

Apocrine adenomyoepithelioma--a rare but distinctive primary sweat gland neoplasm.

Adenomyoepithelioma is a rare, microscopically distinctive tumor of the skin. This article explores an example that presented in the inguinal area in a 29-year-old woman, mimicking adenopathy. Histopathologically, the tumor included two different areas: a cystic area consisting of tubules and glands in hyalinized stroma and a solid area showing marked myoepithelial proliferation. The diagnosis of adenomyoepithelioma was confirmed by the presence of a biphasic immunoprofile, with expression of cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen in the glandular epithelium and with expression of viment

Skin adnexal neoplasms--part 2: an approach to tumours of cutaneous sweat glands.

Tumours of cutaneous sweat glands are uncommon, with a wide histological spectrum, complex classification and many different terms often used to describe the same tumour. Furthermore, many eccrine/apocrine lesions coexist within hamartomas or within lesions with composite/mixed differentiation. In addition to the eccrine and apocrine glands, two other skin sweat glands have recently been described: the apoeccrine and the mammary-like glands of the anogenital area. In this review (the second of two articles on skin adnexal neoplasms), common as well as important benign and malignant lesions of

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: a cutaneous neoplasm analogous to solid papillary carcinoma of breast.

We describe two cases of a distinctive in situ and invasive cutaneous adnexal neoplasm occurring in the eyelid. Mucinous carcinoma represented the invasive portion of the tumor in one case, whereas the other infiltrated in small solid nests. The in situ component is identical to the recently described solid papillary carcinoma of the breast (endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ). Both tumors produced intra- and extracellular mucin, exhibited endocrine differentiation by immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural analysis, and were positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors.

Combined melanocytic and sweat gland neoplasm: cell subsets harbor an identical HRAS mutation in phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica.

Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica (PPK) is characterized by the co-existence of epidermal nevi and large segmental speckled lentiginous nevi of the papulosa type. PPK, previously explained as 'twin spot' mosaicism due to the postzygotic crossing-over of two homozygous recessive mutations, has recently been shown to derive from one postzygotic activating RAS mutation. Epidermal nevi, including those in PPK, are known to give rise to neoplasms such as trichoblastoma and basal cell carcinoma. Within speckled lentiginous nevi, Spitz nevi and melanoma have been well documented. We report a case of PP

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: report of two cases of an under-recognized malignant neoplasm and review of the literature.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare low-grade sweat gland carcinoma with a strong predilection to the eyelid region. It is histologically analogous to endocrine ductal carcinoma/solid papillary carcinoma of the breast and is characterized by a multinodular solid cystic mucinous tumor with immunoreactivity to neuroendocrine markers. Only 20 cases of this unusual tumor have been reported. We present the clinical and histopathologic findings of 2 new cases of EMPSGC and review the relevant literature. The histological differential diagnosis is discussed and attentio

Ancillary immunohistochemical and molecular testing in the classification of cutaneous sweat gland/duct neoplasms: A validation study with emphasis on histomorphologic correlation and pathological diagnosis.

Sweat gland neoplasms represent a challenging area of dermatopathology, as they are relatively uncommon and often histopathologically complex. Recent studies have uncovered distinct immunohistochemical and molecular profiles in several sweat gland neoplasms, including digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA), papillary eccrine adenoma/tubular apocrine adenoma (PEA/TAA), poroid family tumors (PFT)/porocarcinoma, and clear cell hidradenoma (CCH)/clear cell hidradenocarcinoma (CCHCa). To further evaluate the diagnostic utility of ancillary studies in various sweat gland neoplasms, we performed an i

Homeobox transcriptional factor engrailed homeobox 1 is expressed specifically in normal and neoplastic sweat gland cells.

AIMS: A number of homeobox transcriptional factors are utilised as organ-specific markers in the histopathological diagnosis of neoplasms. We have screened a homeobox gene that is expressed specifically in normal sweat gland cells and is useful for the histopathological diagnosis of sweat gland neoplasms. METHODS AND RESULTS: By screening an open database resource of The Human Protein Atlas, 37 genes among the 235 homeobox transcriptional factors were found to be expressed specifically in the skin. Among those 37 genes, the engrailed homeobox 1 (En1) was expressed in normal eccrine glands but

A rare tumor of the face: malignant nodular hidradenoma with dermoscopic features mimicking amelanotic melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Sweat gland neoplasms are rare neoplasms with less known dermoscopic features. OBSERVATIONS: By applying dermoscopy, we identified some common vascular features that have been defined for amelanotic melanoma such as hairpin vessels, dotted vessels, linear irregular vessels, glomerular vessels, and milky-red areas. CONCLUSION: Polymorphic vascular structures can also be seen in eccrine neoplasms. Further evaluations should be done to differentiate and identify the common dermoscopic features of other sweat gland tumors.

Coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin intermediate filaments in benign and malignant sweat gland tumors.

The coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin intermediate filaments has been immunohistochemically evaluated in 124 benign and malignant sweat gland tumors of various types in comparison to normal sweat glands. In addition, all neoplasms have been stained by an antibody to alpha-smooth muscle actin. Epithelial cells reacted with the pan-cytokeratin antibody lu-5. In normal sweat glands, vimentin immunoreactivity was restricted to myoepithelial cells and to some cells of the coiled duct. In benign sweat gland tumors (n = 88), coexpression of vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin was frequently

Secretory immunoglobulin A in sweat gland tumors.

The presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and secretory component (SC) was investigated in normal human skin and in cutaneous neoplasms including a variety of sweat gland tumors. Immunohistochemistry in normal sweat glands revealed the occurrence of secretory IgA (sIgA) as indicated by reactivity for IgA and SC in serial sections. The majority of 28 cases of sweat gland tumors could be demonstrated to retain their ability to produce IgA and SC. In normal as well as in neoplastic sweat glands heaviest staining for sIgA could be found in the lumina and at the surface of lining epithelia. This is co

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid - A diagnostic challenge.

Skin adnexal or sweat gland neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that pose a diagnostic challenge for both ophthalmologists and pathologists. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is an uncommon low grade carcinoma of eccrine ducts with a predilection to occur in the periocular region in the elderly female. We present a rare case of 65-year-old healthy male who presented with a lobulated mass in the left eye lower lid, clinically suspected as sebaceous gland carcinoma, diagnosed as endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma histopathologically.

Sex steroid hormone receptors in human skin appendage and its neoplasms.

Sex steroids have been postulated to influence pathophysiology of human skin through various skin appendages. The presence of sex steroid receptors has been also reported in adnexal tumors but its details still remained unknown. Therefore, in this study, we immunolocalized sex steroid receptor protein (estrogen receptor (ER)alpha, ERbeta, progesterone receptor (PR)A, PRB and androgen receptor (AR)) in 23 cases of non-pathological skin (male: 10, female: 13) and in 50 cases of skin adnexal tumors (male 24, female 26; 38 benign and 12 malignant). ERalpha immunoreactivity was detected exclusively

Small cell sweat gland carcinoma in childhood.

Sweat gland carcinomas are rare skin tumors that typically occur in older patients. The spectrum of their clinical and pathologic features is broad, and many different types of sweat gland carcinomas have been described, ranging from fairly indolent to highly aggressive neoplasms. We present two cases of sweat gland carcinoma with a predominant small cell morphology. Both tumors occurred in children. One lesion developed in an 8-year-old girl as an asymptomatic papule on her left forearm, which ultimately was evaluated using biopsy because of rapid growth and change in color. The other lesion

Primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma.

Primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of malignant sweat gland lesions. It is characterized clinically with non-symptomatic, slow-growing nodules. We report the case of a patient with cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma with local recurrence and metastasis to the lung that was treated with surgical resection therapy and chemotherapy. The initial neoplasm was excised but biopsy was not performed. The tumor then recurred 7 years later, was re-excised, biopsy was performed, and diagnosed as a low-grade hidradenocarcinoma. We presented a very good result of chemotherapy in the tre

Recent Advances on Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Biology for the Diagnosis of Adnexal Sweat Gland Tumors.

Cutaneous sweat gland tumors are a subset of adnexal neoplasms that derive or differentiate into the sweat apparatus. Their great diversity, rarity, and complex terminology make their pathological diagnosis challenging. Recent findings have revealed a wide spectrum of oncogenic drivers, several of which are of diagnostic interest for pathologists. Most of these molecular alterations are represented by gene fusions, which are shared with other homologous neoplasms occurring in organs containing exocrine glands, such as salivary and breast glands, which show similarities to the sweat apparatus.
