In 2001, spores of Bacillus anthracis were deliberately sent through the United States postal system, resulting in five deaths from inhalational anthrax. Rarely observed clinical symptoms associated with these cases led to a hypothesis about the etiology of the English Sweating Sickness. The disease appeared sporadically in England between 1485 and 1551. Numerous viruses have been proposed as possible causes of the "English Sweat". Anthrax has not previously been considered because, documented cases of inhalational anthrax have been rare and pronounced sweating was not a noted symptom of the m

After the battle of Bosworth in 1485 London was frightened by a severe epidemic of Sweating Disease. Until 1551 four more followed of which only the 1525 epidemic invaded Central and Northern Europe harassing Vienna during its "First Turkish Siege".People abruptly fell ill with headache, tachycardia, fever and secretion of stinking sweat. They were afflicted with anxiety, deliria and somnolence. The illness mostly lasted for 24 h, but death although could occur earlier. At the beginning of epidemics the lethality was particularly high. The treatment with distinct medicaments had to be started

In 1529, Sudor anglicus, the 'English Sweating Sickness', spread from England to Germany reaching the city of Augsburg. Its exact nature is unclear: the symptoms were profuse sweating, uncontrollable thirst, and headaches, with death occurring within hours of infection. Those who survived the first twenty-four hours returned to health. According to one source the fever arrived in Autumn 1529 and in September there were 800 deaths; another source gives November as the onset with 600 deaths. While these death rates were in fact relatively low compared with the plague, for instance, people were p

In this report, an incidence of sweating sickness-like symptoms in a crossbred Holstein Friesian cow was diagnosed. The cow was suffering from vaporization of the skin, dehydration, wet hair coat, and matting of hair due to excessive sweating. There were several ticks, flies, and mosquitoes in tail switch and other parts of the body. Blood and urine parameters were tested. We treated the patient successfully with ivermectin as ectoparasite control, ceftiofur sodium antibiotic to treat bacterial infections, ketoprofen as analgesics and antipyretics, chlorpheniramine maleate as H2-blocker, and t

Principal symptoms of motion sickness in humans include facial pallor, nausea and vomiting, and sweating. It is less known that motion sickness also affects thermoregulation, and the purpose of this review is to present and discuss existing data related to this subject. Hypothermia during seasickness was firstly noted nearly 150 years ago, but detailed studies of this phenomenon were conducted only during the last 2 decades. Motion sickness-induced hypothermia is philogenetically quite broadly expressed as besides humans, it has been reported in rats, musk shrews and mice. Evidence from human

Sweating in the absence of thermal stimulation is one of the cardinal symptoms of motion sickness. But since sweating is closely related to electrodermal activity this may be a potentially useful index of the intensity of motion sickness. In order to evaluate this possibility, the correlations between electrodermal activity and a range of signs and symptoms of motion sickness were examined in four experiments, in which a total of 170 subjects were exposed to a cross-coupled force environment. Although increases in skin conductance did not correlate with specific single indices of motion sickne

The major symptoms of motion sickness are well known and include facial pallor, nausea and vomiting, and sweating, but it is poorly recognized that they actually reflect severely perturbed thermoregulation. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to present and discuss existing data related to this subject. While hypothermia during seasickness was first noted nearly 150 years ago, detailed studies of this phenomenon were conducted only during the last two decades. Our own research confirmed that motion sickness-induced hypothermia is quite broadly expressed phylogenetically as, besides humans, it

Sweating is commonly associated with motion sickness. Previous studies have attempted to relate sweating or the associated electrodermal activity to the degree of motion sickness symptoms. This study was aimed at improving methodology by study of 1) recording site--palmar finger versus forehead; and 2) signal analysis--tonic skin conductance level (SCL) versus phasic skin conductance responses (SCRs). Eleven subjects were exposed to a cross-coupled motion challenge, produced by repeated head movements (16 per minute) during rotation around the Earth vertical axis in which rotational velocity w

After a brief description of the newest and special form of motion sickness known as "space sickness" arising in space flight, and the various hypotheses on its aetiopathogenesis, motion sickness in general and the air or plane sickness deriving from atmospheric flying are discussed. The aetiopathogenesis of air sickness derives from abnormal stimulations that are primarily vestibular but also visual and somesthesic, and generated by irregular movements or variations in attitude of the plane. Reflex action than produces effects that are primarily neurovegetative (nausea, vomiting, pallor, scia

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Motion sickness is an ancient phenomenon that affects many people. Nausea, vomiting, disorientation, sweating, fatigue, and headache are just few of the many signs and symptoms that are commonly experienced during an episode of motion sickness. In the present review, we will provide an overview of the current research trends and topics in the domain of motion sickness, including theoretical considerations, physiological and neural mechanisms, individual risk factors, and treatment options, as well as recommendations for future research directions.
RECENT FINDINGS: More rece

Motion sickness is common in the population, especially in children, but its physiopathology is only partially understood and the true nature of the particular susceptibility of certain subjects remains completely unknown. Some symptoms of motion sickness, like pallor and cold sweating, are of an autonomic nature and the role of the autonomic nervous system in vasovagal syncope is well known. Our aim was therefore to study the relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and vasovagal syncope susceptibility. Questionnaires about susceptibility to motion sickness and to vasovagal syncope

An original scheme of quantitative evaluation of clinical manifestations of motion sickness has been developed. According to the scheme, eight major symptoms of motion sickness: vertigo, nausea, vomiting, sweating, paleness, headache, sleepiness, flaccidity are scored in relation to their manifestations. The scheme has been used in vestibular tests of 57 test subjects. The vestibular test used is tolerance to cross-coupled acceleration. On the basis of the scores quantitative criteria of human tolerance to vestibular exposures have been suggested. It is emphasized that the scheme can be widely

Space motion sickness is experienced by 60% to 80% of space travelers during their first 2 to 3 days in microgravity and by a similar proportion during their first few days after return to Earth. Space motion sickness symptoms are similar to those in other forms of motion sickness; they include: pallor, increased body warmth, cold sweating, malaise, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and anorexia. These are important because they may affect the operational performance of astronauts. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain space motion sickness: the fluid shift hypothesis and the

Motion sickness is associated with a variety of autonomic symptoms, presumably due to proximity or functional interconnectivity between the autonomic centers in the brainstem and the vestibular system. A direct influence of the vestibular system on cardiovascular variables, defined as the vestibulo-sympathetic reflex, has been reported previously. Our aim was to investigate the sudomotor components of the autonomic responses associated with motion sickness during passive cross-coupling stimulation ("roll while rotating"). Healthy subjects (n = 17) were rotated at 40°/s around an earth-vertical

An inflight, clinically-oriented investigation of SMS was begun on STS-4 and revealed the following: compared to motion sickness on Earth, autonomic signs are significantly different in space motion sickness (SMS) vs. motion sickness (MS) in that sweating is not present, pallor or flushing may be present, and vomiting is episodic, sudden, and brief. Nausea may be present but is more often absent. Onset ranges from minutes to hours, plateaus, and rapidly resolves in 8-72 h with 36 h as average. Postflight reactions have been mild unless deliberately provoked in the early period of re-exposure t

A military tank driving simulator has recently been introduced as a training aid for tank drivers in the Israel Defense Forces. Reports of nausea and vomiting among the first users of the simulator launched our investigation of the possible existence of a motion sickness-like syndrome among simulator drivers. Although the 59 subjects drove the simulator without any report of vomiting, other motion sickness-like symptoms were frequently reported. A comparison of symptoms reported after simulator and real tank driving show that dizziness, nausea, disorientation and hypersalivation were more freq

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of aromatherapy incorporating Citrus limon essential oil on the symptoms of patients with motion sickness.
METHODS: A non-randomized, pre-post self-controlled design was adopted. Sixty individuals susceptible to motion sickness, recruited between October 2023 and February 2024, were enrolled in this study. The trial was conducted in two phases separated by a one-week washout period. In Phase 1, participants wore standard disposable medical masks, whereas in Phase 2, they wore disposable aromatherapy masks. During both phases, participants were expo
