We studied the effects of exogenous NO donor (sodium nitroprusside) and NO synthesis blocker (100 μM L-NAME) on baseline electrical activity of postganglionic fibers in the sympathetic superior cervical in rats during postnatal ontogeny. Starting the age of 20 days, sodium nitroprusside increased the mean discharge amplitude and the spectrum power in the respiratory (0.7-1.5 Hz) and cardiac (4-7 Hz) frequency bands. In contrast, application of L-NAME for 1 h decreased the spectrum power in these bands. Both agents produced no significant effect on the rhythmic sympathetic discharges at frequen

The functions of autonomic nervous system were systematically evaluated in a case of causalgia in the upper limbs after neck trauma. A 14-year-old boy had had hard blow on his nucha in a rough fight. After one week, a sustained burning pain, swelling and skin color change developed in the left upper limb. These symptoms also appeared in the right upper limb after 6 weeks. The physical examinations disclosed edema, reddish moist skin, and atrophic nail in the upper limbs. The neurological examinations showed a radiating pain to the upper limbs caused by the neck movement or pressure on the supr

In anesthetized cats, single unilateral electric shock applied to the postganglionic cervical sympathetic pathway induced a decrease of cerebral flow for 45--90 min in parietal region by 21.7 +/- 0.9% in the gray matter and by 51.3 +/- 1.2% at the boundary of the gray matter. The systemic arterial pressure remained constant. The cerebral oedema occurred on the stimulated side. These reactions seem to be due to vasopressin participation.

Sympathetic efferents regulate the “fight-or-flight” response and sympathetic and vagal fibers have been suggested to retrogradely and centrally spread pathogens associated with Parkinson’s disease. To examine the arrangement of the vagal and sympathetic motor fibers in the celiac ganglion (CG), gastrointestinal tract, and along the superior mesenteric artery and its sub-branches, we double-labeled the vagal efferents by injecting Dextran-Texas Red into the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and the sympathetic postganglionics with tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry in male Sprague-Dawle

The localization of PKC-beta was studied in rat sympathetic neurons using a polyclonal antibody specific for the beta 1- and beta 2-subspecies. The tissues studied included the superior cervical (SCG) and hypogastric (HGG) ganglia and the target tissues of the SCG and HGG neurons: the submandibular gland, iris, prostate and vas deferens. PKC-beta-LI was found in nerve fibers in both ganglia. A proportion of the fibers in the SCG disappeared after decentralization, suggesting that the fibers were of both pre- and postganglionic origin. The somata of the HGG and SCG neurons expressed varying amo

UNLABELLED: Sympathetic symptoms associated with cervical disorders, such as vertigo, headache, dizziness, etc., are common clinical disorders bewildering both clinicians and patients. In our clinical practice we observed that sympathetic symptoms associated with cervical disorders were apparently relieved in some patients after undergoing routine anterior cervical decompression and fusion plus posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) resection. This study was designed to investigate the sympathetic nerve innervations in the cervical PLL and its potential correlation with cervical sympathetic sym

Anhidrosis occurs in the majority of multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients but the underlying site of lesion is not well established. We describe three patients with long-standing MSA and anhidrosis diagnosed on the basis of a thermoregulatory sweating test. In biopsies of anhidrotic skin, immunofluorescence analysis disclosed a well preserved postganglionic sudomotor innervation in all three patients supporting the hypothesis of a preganglionic nerve fiber lesion underlying their anhidrosis. Postganglionic sudomotor fiber integrity was also confirmed by normal electrodermal responses in one

The site of origins, peripheral courses and intramucosal distribution of the sympathetic post-ganglionic nerve fibers supplying to the larynx were investigated by means of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) and Falck-Hillarp method in 51 cats. The cervical sympathetic ganglia which send the postganglionic fibers to the larynx were the superior cervical ganglion (SCG), middle cervical ganglion (MCG), and stellate ganglion (SG). Location of MCG was at the bifurcation of the cervical sympathetic trunk, rostrally to the point of its crossing with the subclavian artery. After WG

OBJECT: The present study was undertaken to elucidate the extent and precise distribution of the postganglionic sympathetic fibers in the cranial nerves projecting to the orbit and to reconstruct sympathetic routes in the orbit in humans. For this purpose, the authors made an immunohistochemical determination of the sympathetic fibers by using an antibody against norepinephrine-synthetic enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH).
METHODS: Specimens containing the orbit and the cavernous sinus were obtained from formalin-fixed human cadavers. First, it was confirmed that the superior cervical ganglion

The functional properties of the sympathetic fibers innervating the cochlea are not well understood. Adrenergic fibers supplying lateral wall structures of the cochlea have been observed terminating on radiating arterioles and collecting venules. Adrenergic fibers also terminate as 'free' endings in the spiral osseous lamina. Stimulation or transection of sympathetic fibers originating from superior cervical chain and supplying the cochlea have yielded mixed results concerning many aspects of cochlea physiology. In order to clarify the origin of sympathetic fibers and their role in control of

Abundant NPY-immunoreactive nerve fibers were found throughout the parenchyma of the rat carotid body. They were in close proximity to smooth muscle cells and pericytes of small blood vessels intervening a narrow interstitial space of 80-150 nm. No immunoreactive nerve fibers were associated with chief or sustentacular cells. After removing the superior cervical ganglion, no immunoreactive nerve fibers were seen in the ipsilateral carotid body and the immunoreactive nerve fibers remained intact in the carotid body after cutting the ipsilateral superior cervical sympathetic trunk. The NPY-immun

The pattern of autonomic deficit in the face of cluster headache patients resembles the deficit in patients with a postganglionic sympathetic lesion from some other cause; however, the presence of abnormal cardiac rhythms and bilateral pupillary reflex deficit in some patients with cluster headache suggests that the lesion might compromise central sympathetic drive. To investigate this possibility, the vasomotor and sudomotor startle reflex was investigated in the hands of six cluster headache patients with ocular and thermoregulatory signs of postganglionic sympathetic deficit in the face; fo

Ross' syndrome is a rare peripheral nervous system disorder defined by Adie's tonic pupil, hyporeflexia, and segmental anhidrosis. Injury to postganglionic cholinergic fibers is believed to account for the tonic pupil and sweating disturbance. We report a 47-year-old man found to have Ross' syndrome in combination with a complete postganglionic Horner's syndrome. Pharmacologic and sudomotor tests in this unique patient provide further evidence that Ross' syndrome results from injury to sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglion cells or to their postganglionic projections.

Ross syndrome is characterised by tonic pupil, areflexia and anhidrosis, and the underlying lesion affects postganglionic skin sympathetic nerve fibres. We describe a 51-year-old man who had complained of anhidrosis since adolescence, at which time this problem was limited to the lower arms. The thermoregulatory sweating test disclosed generalised anhidrosis (GA) except for two small skin areas that were located in the right palm and left neck. Immunofluorescence analysis disclosed no cholinergic sudomotor fibres around the sweat glands of non-sweating skin areas, which were evident although s

The localization of substance P is studied in the human prevertebral sympathetic ganglia and descending colon by the indirect immunofluorescence technique. Strongly immunoreactive axons reach the coeliac, superior mesenteric and inferior mesenteric ganglia. The sympathetic postganglionic neurones are surrounded by a meshwork of positive beaded fibers and terminals. Varicose nerve fibers are variously distributed in all nonepithelial layers of the colon. A close network of fibers and terminal surrounds the ganglionic cells in the mienteric and submucous plexuses. Substance P-like immunoreactive

In orthostatic hypotensive patients renin is reported to increase in response to head-up tilt unless the lesion involves postganglionic sympathetic efferent nerves. The authors examined responses of plasma renin activity (PRA) to acute blood pressure reduction in 4 patients with orthostatic hypotension. When the coexistence of normal plasma norepinephrine (PNE) and normal or high-normal pressor response to alpha stimulant is considered to be a sign of preserved function of postganglionic fibers, 2 of the patients had sympathetic lesions mainly confined to central and/or preganglionic fibers. Kv1.3 channels are known to modulate many aspects of neuronal function. We tested the hypothesis that Kv1.3 modulates the function of postganglionic sympathetic neurons. RT-PCR, immunoblot, and immunohistochemical analyses indicated that Kv1.3 channels were expressed in these neurons. Immunohistochemical analyses indicated that Kv1.3 protein was localized to neuronal cell bodies, processes, and nerve fibers at sympathetic neurovascular junctions. Margatoxin (MgTX), a specific inhibitor of Kv1.3, was used to assess the function of the channel. Electrophysiological analyses indicated that MgTX s

Joints are densely innervated by postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibers. These fibers control the blood flow in the joint and vascular permeability, either directly or indirectly, in cooperation with leukocytes. Chemical sympathectomy or suppression of adrenergic signaling significantly reduces inflammatory processes in the initial acute state of inflammation whereas the same procedures may increase inflammation at later stages. These findings indicate that the sympathetic nervous system supports the development of inflammation but may reduce inflammation at more chronic stages. During chroni

The major goals of this present study were 1) to further clarify which parasympathetic ganglion sends postganglionic fibers to the lower gingiva and lip that may be involved in the inflammatory processes besides the local factors; 2) to separately examine the central pathways regulating sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation; and 3) to examine the distribution of central premotor neurons on both sides. A retrogradely transported green fluorescent protein conjugated pseudorabies virus was injected into the lower gingiva and lip of intact and sympathectomized adult female rats. Some animals
